Translation of the opening speech (sorry if my English is not great): I will never forget Rachmaninov's concerto n.2. I often listened to it back when I was in Korea. Although I thought it was a beautiful piece, I could live without it. I could listen to it while doing something else and I admit that sometimes it felt like nothing but a distant noise. And then, in that church, before that piano, with my frozen fingers, each harmony suddenly started to pierce my body through my heart, and a whole new world opened to me, like if I was hearing this piece, that I knew so well, for the very first time. It was no longer me and the music, it was only one perfect harmony. And I thought "Ah the soloist that's playing right now, he must be the happiest person in the world! Can I one day be that person? No way, It'd be a miracle!". And during my childhood, I used to dream about this concerto from Rachmaninov. And indeed 18 years later I played this concerto in many places around the world, and each time I'd play it with a different orchestra, It would feel unreal, like a dream. And in that empty church, suddenly, the very first chords of this concerto sounded like fate coming closer and closer to me.

라흐 2번은 문지영씨가 연주한것을 제일좋아했습니다 수많은 라흐연주를 보았고 그중 임현정씨가 연주한 라흐 역시 오래전에 보았었습니다 사실 임현정씨 오케스트라와 협연한 라흐2번을 보고 템포가 너무빨라 감정이입이 잘되지않았습니다 근데 이곡을듣고 왜 임현정을 얘기하는지 확실히 알았네요 정말 감동받았습니다 혼자서 오케스트라의 몫까지 다소화해내고 오케스트라의 빈자리는 찾아볼수없을정도로 완벽했습니다 말로 형언할수 없을정도로 정말 놀랍고도 대단하네요 10번이고 100번을봐도 감동입니다 이런연주를 볼수있게해줘서 감사합니다 :) 이연주를 현장에서 꼭 한번 볼수있는날이오길 희망합니다

임현정님의 연주는 원래 악보에 충실해서 그대로 연주하는 것이라고 합니다. 그러나 현대의 대부분의 연주자들은 곡의 표현력을 극대화 시키기 위해 템포를 늦취 연주하는 경향이 많은 것 같습니다. 듣는 사람들이 그 것에 익숙하다 보니 어색할 수가 있는 것이지요. 저도 마찬가지 였는데 이제는 익숙하고 더 좋을 때도 있답니다.^^ 좋은 하루 되세요.

She is simply amazing. As if this piece was not difficult enough with an orchestra, for her to play it solo taking two roles with this very authentic arrangement is simply incredible. I think she must have two invisible hands playing along! While there are orchestra/piano renditions that may sound a little better, she is HJ Lim is beyond virtuoso!

This should have at least a billion views. Tempo is often a tad bit too fast for me personally, but this is the closest thing to magic I've heard from a piano performance.

Try playing it with a metranome. This is how fast it is supposed to go. I can play it slower, but not this fast, not at all this well, even playing it slower.

Rachmaninov himself plays it in a similar tempo and manner, HJ Lim perfectly understands what Rachmaninov intends, same goes to Zoltan Kocsis one of my fav Rachmaninov interpreters, plays at a similar tempo.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 was written during one of the low points of Rachmaninoff’s career. His music was unpopular, the Russian Revolution was on the horizon, civil unrest was brewing and his beloved country would be devastated by civil war in only a few years time causing him to leave Russia for the United States as a political exile. In certain parts of the music you can hear that frustration, anger and sadness through the heavy natural minor chord progressions that feature throughout, reminiscent of a tempestuous storm, intertwined with periods of lighter, more delicate harmonies that shine through like rays of sunlight bringing warmth, hope and joy. This piece evokes nostalgia, nationalism, longing and hope in a way only Russian music can.

Written well but it's all not the truth. Rachmaninoff wrote the concerto in 1900, way far from the revolution time (1917). The masterpiece was dedicated to his therapist who supported him and helped to get through depression caused by failure of the First Symphony.

​@@김유나-x2o 기본적으로 협주곡에는 피아노만 치는부분, 오케스트라만 하는부분, 같이하는 부분 3가지로 나뉘는데요! 3가지 경우에서 모두 중요한 부분은 멜로디를 살려서 연주를해야한답니다! 그래야 듣는사람이 멜로디를 따라 들으며 지루하지않고, 일종의 더 중요한 부분, 더 강조된부분(=멜로디)를 듣게돼요. 지금 임현정 피아니스트님은 제가 위에 언급한 3가지에서 멜로디라인+ 오케스트라와 같이 칠때 피아노가 치고 나와야하는 큰 소리부분 등등을 다 살려서 혼자 피아노만으로 연주하시는 것이기 때문에 관현악을 다 담을 수는 없겠지만, 정말 대단한 퍼포먼스라고 볼 수 있어요.

Here is a magnificent arrangement for solo piano of this concerto. HJ Lim is really very talented. It becomes a great sonata for piano and I hope we can listen to the other two movements so arranged. I must admit that I prefer the concertante form with orchestra, but congratulations for this work and its interpretation.
