I nearly bought a pair of Polar 10s earlier this year but I went for a pair of Evolve 30Ms instead. They're not quite as loud as the Polar but they're more compact, lightweight and have a much more comprehensive built in mixer with better connectivity and built in effects for a very similar price.

I like this guy. Hés got the live acoustic thing nailed. Seems easy to the onlooker but very difficult to get live music to sound good. I'm in the game and understand. Most of us sound terrible live. Still not sure why. The other issue is the KZbin sound. Hard to tell for real. I tired that 87A mic. Not sure about it. Returned. Bought it again. Tried it. Returned again. I also use the AH ZED10FX. Really a good mixer for anything. I've played music with a lot of guys and some just sound good. Some don't. They can both be playing the same song the same way. As far as PA speakers. My rule is avoid all Bose stuff. Always use a full range system. Meaning sub and top. 37HZ to 20k. Folks will say one doesn't need a sub for acoustic gigs. It's true it can be done without but best to have a system with one, even if its an 8 inch sub. It's not about whether one has a drum or not. It's about the full range of sound the audience hears or doesn't. They don't know but they know. One can clearly hear the diff in this guys vids from sub system or just top alone sound. Not the same. Can never be the same. My rule is get the best equip but used, cheap, and beat up so folks don't thing one is rich. No labels on clothes or shoes. Leave the ipad at home. Write set list on the back of the guitar in sharpie of need. I also try not to play covers in any way verbatim but capture the spirit of the song at its core so they know it. Playing covers verbatim or perfect is a turn off for them. Never play originals for dollars. No one cares. Always tune down to E flat, so don't sound like a HS kid just learning. Standard tuning is not moody, mean, or mysterious. Play some kid tunes like Jack Johnson and get the money. Always respect the audience with an intro and outro but don't chit chat much. Humans have a tendency to brag about something and this also turns the audience off. I do it too and hate it later. No one cares whether one plays finger stile or strum. DMB, Mraz and others made a good living strumming. I used to watch buskers and bar acoustic guys from Key West to Savannah to wherever as a kid and saw what worked and what didn't. Its subtle. The location has something to do with it as well. Playing in a tourist area is critical. These neighborhood local gigs at Bad Daddys Burgers in Greenville, AL. are worthless. Look for hotel clusters with travelers going to dinner. Anywhere in Florida, New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, etc. Places like that. Wherever folks are on vacation is a jackpot. Stay south of I20. Back to some have it and some don't. I hung out with a famous guy for a few years and we jammed a little. Every note he played sounded so much better than the rest of us. He played a $100 used acoustic. We were all in rehab.

Hello Stuart. Thank you for your time to put up these reviews. Amazing job you did! I was also torn between the RCF Evox J8 and the Polar 10. Watched both or your videos and finally decided to go for the Polar 10. A small mixer is always handy since most of the time I have to perform with tracks, and small adjustments are always called. The column is still on its way, gonna be here in a week maybe. Great job!! Thumbs up!!

Good question, I've got the Polar 10s and my J8's are definitely louder if I need push things - which is not often but nice to have when the need arises. However the Polar 12 will probably match the J8's in volume. They both sound good for music as well as guitar and vox so I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either. strictly

In my opinion go for the Polar 12s if they are within budget. You’ll have more power when you need to get the party going. The 10’s would probably handle most gigs but you might lack the low end at loud volumes.

@@stuartreecephotoandvideo thanks for a quick response. I have a Bose L1 pro8 which sounds absolutely brilliant but is lacking a bit of power at some venues. Been really enjoying your reviews, Stuart! Thanks for doing those. Being a solo singer-songwriter myself, it's great to be able to hear you sing and play through these things in a real-life scenario. I'm looking into buying a system like that. So far i think it'll be between the RCF JMIX8 ad the Yamaha Stagepas 1k, which looks great too. If you get a chance, try out the Yamaha, it'd be really interesting to hear about it compared to the HK and the RCF. Take care, Simon

@@stuartreeceband So far I'm leaning more towards the Yamaha or RCF option... there were several videos and reviews that didn't like the build quality of the Bose Pro 8 and 16 at all. Lots of wobble, between the culumn spacer and the sub module. I have to agree, for a unit this expensive it doesn't look very reassuring. Also several reviewers did notice a very high pitched noise coming from the system, which for a solo show in an intimate setting could be really annoying. The Yamaha on the other hand is not only much cheaper than the Bose (and at the moment comes with a free trolley), it's also very quiet (don't know about the RCF s self noise though). It does look a bit sleeker than the RCF JMIX8 too. Wouldn't be my main concern, but i think for solo shows it's a valid point.

Great video what’s your size audience would you say you can get out of this with acoustic guitar and vocals?
@stuartreecephotoandvideo2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion it really depends on the type of gig. It handles low key background live music at a wedding or corporate gig of 100 people pretty comfortably. But if it were a show where you want to be prominent then I’d say no more than 50 people with a single unit. And 80 people with 2 units. But for the types of gigs I do, (restaurants weddings and private functions) I never lacked using one unit. But Ultimately I upgraded to the Bose L1 Pro8 and will never go back.

A short while later (see my previous comment below) I‘ve placed an order for the HK Polar 10, based on your kind and helpful sharing about it. I‘m getting mine for more than 10% off due it being a customer return (in mint condition), so that’s great, too. And if I don‘t like it as much as I hope I will, I can return it and get a used, two-year-old RCF Evox Jmix8 (another of your recs) in very good condition for €550, so for €65 less than than the new Polar 10 is costing me. Nice to have choices. The Jmix8 is of course better for ditching an external mixer, of course, but I can run my RCF M18 mixer into the Polar 10. Or if I want to gig with no ventilator noise (from the M18) and have an even more compact set-up, then I can get an Elite Acoustics StompMix X4. Just discovered it as a potentially great way to input 4 channels with phantom power, individual compression, EQ and even reverb! So I could run my vocals + main guitar + alternately-tuned guitar + mandolin with individual controls, or else handle a duo with 2 vocals and 2 guitars. They even offer an x6 with lithium battery plus 2 more channels and even chorus, but it‘s a lot more experience and much larger. Just realized the x4 can give me not only 4, but even 5 total inputs on the HK Polar 10, since the Polar 10 has 2 inputs. So I could even run my main guitar in that way with my Carl Martin Acoustic Gig pedalboard or my Zoom A1 Four in between, thus freeing up one of the 4 channels on the x4 for an electric guitar, another vocal, and stompbox or whatever. Just posting this here in case anywhere loves the idea of the Polar 10 but doesn‘t yet have a mixer with compression (!) and reverb. At about €350, the StompMix x4 seems like quite a good deal. And even for folks who only need to use a single guitar and one vocal channel, the x4 should do the trick very nicely. It‘s more compact than the mixer you (Stuart) are using, plus it has compression and the ability to change scenes for different songs, e.g. calling for more or less reverb, just be pressing a footswitch. If I love then Polar 10, I‘m definitely getting an x4 to test.

Hi Scott, interesting read, thanks. Please let me know what you think of the system. Like most columns it sounds best if you are in front of the system so that you are hearing full range. While playing live (next to the column) You might find the mid highs quite loud in your ears. But that's more than likely because you aren't hearing the sub down at your feet (It's unfortunately not the Bose L1 when it comes to dispersion, although it can get a lot louder than the Bose)... Take a step or two in front of the system and then judge... Looking forward to hearing your feedback!
@scottbecker34854 жыл бұрын
Stuart Reece Thank you for summing it up so well. My unit came a week ago and I tried it out immediately at home, running it off an RCF M18 mixer for vocals and various guitars. And you know what? It was instant love! :-) I had set it up slightly in front and to the left of me, with me looking at it diagonally, so as to first hear sort of what an audience might hear close up (or what I might hear if positioned there when playing live, albeit with my back turned to it then). The even dispersion is definitely superior to the normal speakers I used to use, and the coverage of frequencies is very fine considering it‘s a column system. My vocals sounded like me, natural, and my guitars did, too. There was enough sparkle for intricate finger-picking but enough balance to keep it from sounding quacks (I use great preamps, so no piezo quack anyhow). Now for the bad news: The unit I purchased had been returned to the shop, so I had bought it for a discount. And it had a problem with the sound getting crackly and then cutting out completely! This was on the top column, only. I suspected something wrong with the seating of the connector pins, but wobbling slightly didn‘t do anything, nor did switching everything off, dismantling, and re-inserting. Nor did switching out the cables I was using between the M18 and the speaker‘s inputs. Nor did directly plugging my guitar and mic in to the speaker. In the end, I gave up and called the shop for a return authorization. They kindly sent out a brand-new unit for a slightly discounted price (to compensate me for my trouble - very nice), and it‘s arriving tomorrow. So it‘s like Christmas all over again. The sub is quite heavy, but I‘ll be using a fold-up cart to get it to gigs, so that‘s OK, especially since they kindly include a cover to protect it. Now I‘ll be re-thinking my mixer. For solo gigs, I‘d like to have something even smaller that is silent (no fan noise) but still with the basics like compression, EQ and reverb. And since I‘d like to add some tastefully quiet backing vocals on certain songs, I‘ve ordered the TC Helicon Play Live Acoustic. The presets on that will allow me to switch reverbs or whatever depending on the song, or on which guitar I am plugging in (I use a couple in alternate tunings). And I‘ll get compression and stuff for both vocals and guitars. That will be plugged into the one input on the HK Polar 10, leaving the other input availed for something like the StompMix x4, which can then also accommodate anything else I might want to run, e.g. a duo singer plus bass, a BeatBuddy, a kickbox, etc. We shall see... Anyhow, thanks so much for turning me onto the Polar 10! The sales guy at the shop said every single salesperson there preferred the HK‘s sound over that of the Evox. They were all astounded how good it is, and at such a low price point.
@stuartreeceband4 жыл бұрын
@@scottbecker3485 Good point, the sub is a little heavy but it is a wooden cab. The JMIX is also fairly heavy though. Especially carrying it over a long distance, but if you have wheels you are sorted. Pity about the issue with your first unit. HK usually have excellent quality control. There are probably 'better sounding' columns out there but price to quality ratio on this unit is incomparable to any other column in my opinion. Keep us in the loop on your final decision.
@scottbecker34854 жыл бұрын
Stuart Reece Yeah, I heard from the dealer, too, that nobody had ever had any issues with the Polar 10, but then again, it’s not been on the market so long yet. (I figure the 1st customer blew it somehow and then returned it defective without admitting it.) The new Polar 10 arrived yesterday and works and sounds great! It didn‘t take well at all, though, to my brand-new TC-Helicon Play Acoustic. Sent the Play Acoustic back immediately. It has very limited controls of the vocal mic sound used for the (great-sounding!) harmonies. You can only turn off all compression and EQ or else use awful presets that jack up the treble and castrate the bass so much that the sound coming out of the Polar 10 (which, itself, has quite a bit of high end) sounded brittle and sharp and hissy. So I wouldn‘t rec the TC-Helicon to anybody with a Polar 10. Will next try a Boss VE-500, which allows for full, individual control of all relevant vocal parameters. The Boss will live in Channel 1 of the Polar 10, leaving Channel 2 for my guitar (thru single from the Boss, passed through one of my guitar multieffect pedals), Channel 3 for the StompMix x4 (4 channels in one) and Channel 4 free for whatever doesn‘t need any tweaking with compression or reverb, e.g. my BeatBuddy. This should be a killer set-up to get 7 channels into the HK Audio, all with the extra ingredients they need. Hope this input helps somebody who stumbles over your Polar 10 video and maybe needs more channels, compression, reverb, etc.

@stuartreeceband3 жыл бұрын
Neither have ‘bothered’ me to be honest, Lately I’ve been turning the RCF’s amps up to the top and there is definitely a slight hiss if you stand close to the speakers without music playing through it but I doubt a client could even tell it’s there and as soon as you fade in background music it’s pretty much inaudible. (The other option is to run the amps at 75% and then they are dead quite) The HKs don’t seem to have an audible hiss at all when I run them full. Note that The RCF is by far more powerful tho. The HKs claim to be 2000w each but they can’t keep up with the 1400w RCF system (this might be the 12” sub in the RCF also though) but maybe the RCF amps are pushing harder at full volume than the HK. Sorry, not the greatest answer here.

I ended up selling them both to buy 1 Bose L1 Pro 8. I really love the sound of Bose for acoustic guitar and vocals and I think the pro 8 must be the nicest piece of sound gear I've ever owned. I doubt I'll have a need to switch, not for what I do... To answer your question about busking, The HK looks and sounds good and does a nice job of spreading the sound without sounding harsh so you can't go wrong with it. However, the sub is fairly bulky (boarderline heavy) and the system doesn't have much in terms of eq or reverb so you may need to take a mixer with you. In the same price range as the HK you could also look at the Bose S1, it's not as loud but it's loud enough and has a lot going for it. Good luck.
@wallacenock74233 жыл бұрын
@@stuartreeceband ah thanks Stuart I appreciate that. Yea I wondered about the weight. I currently own the Bose L1 16 the bigger brother of your unit and really love the sound and what it does. The only drawback is the bag you buy for it as extra doesn’t have wheels and you gotta lug this heavy unit in your back. I have a little trolley that I currently put my AER on and my pedal board. I do a lot of looping so much like yourself I need at least three inputs. I have a pedal for vocals so I don’t need and extra effects it’s all on my pedal board. So the price was the ine thing I liked about the HK but if it’s heavy I’m kind of put off a little. Is it a lot heavier than the L8?? Otherwise I was keen to just get an older L1 compact or even a QSC K 10.2 It’s all decisions and trying to keep it as per table as possible if you get what I mean. 🤣🤣

It’s not as prone to feedback as say a 15” speaker on a stand. And for the volumes I play at I never have issues, even when Im forced to be right next to the column. I havent used them with multiple mics and a band setup so I can’t speak for that but the beauty of a column is that the small speaker diaphragms at the top don’t carry much low end. In my experience, Low end is generally where feedback starts and in this case the sub seems to keep those frequencies away from my vocal mic. The wooden cab that houses the sub does a good job of containing the bass around it and pushing it forward.

Thanks for these true-to-life acoustic solo impressions! Sounds like the first affordable column system with more lower-mid transparency, agreeable treble and enough bottom-end warmth and push. The Jmix8 you also kindly demoed for us also impresses, but this sounds more balanced and transparent, even if perhaps a bit weaker in terms of power. The one huge bummer (thanks for calling our attention to that) is the missing internal reverb! How could they leave off something so important for any live musician? That kinda defeats the purpose of having a built-in mixer except for announcer-only applications. :-( Well, since that forces us to use an external mixer then it is at least no longer worth complaining about the missing phantom power for condenser mics. ;-) P.S. I will definitely check it out as my entry into the column scene, using my RCF M18 digital (wireless) mixer or my Allen & Heath (same one as yours!) up front. Would have liked the option to gig without the extra mixer, but if the sound pleases, then the price is right.

@scottbecker34854 жыл бұрын
Jeff Dubia Yes, as a fresh-baked Polar 10 owner, and can now second that opinion on it. The sound and build quality are excellent, especially at this low price point. I‘ve since gotten over being miffed about no reverb built into it, and have found my workaround for that. Channel 1 = Boss VE-500 for vocal effects (and harmonies). Channel 2 = one of my acoustic pedals (Zoom, Carl Martin) for my main guitar‘s effects. Channel 3 = 4-channel mini digital mixer with compression, EQ, Reverb, etc. by Elite Acoustics (StompMix x4) for 2 secondary guitars in alternate tunings, a duo partner‘s vocals plus a kickstomp. Channel 4 = BeatBuddy. So all channels get the effects they need in a very small setup. The Polar 10 inspired me to reconsider my other gear and spend some money on it. That‘s how much I like it. :-)

I haven't had a chance to test one out yet, but am considering the Polar 12 for my Wedding/corporate dj setup.
@scottbecker34854 жыл бұрын
Jeff Dubia Interesting - wasn‘t aware they are now also offering a 12-inch version. If they didn‘t increase the size of the mid/treble speakers, though, then I‘d guess that the frequency „hole“ in the lower mids would be even bigger with the 12-inch than with the 10-inch woofer. For DJing, perhaps the 12-inch woofer would be good/better, but maybe at the expense of the overall tonal picture? Will now take a look at the tweeters to see if they‘re the same in the newer model...

Could it get over drums.

It depends how loud the band plays, I think in most cases a single unit would struggle to keep up. A pair would be better but not perfect. I played an outdoor gig with a trio (2 vox, guitar, bass and we mocked the kick drum) we used two of these units and I felt like we were pushing the system to the limit. But it did the job well. Definitely better suited for acoustic stuff

Sounds great man! What do you use for a kick?
@stuartreeceband2 жыл бұрын
My loop station, I saved a sample of a kick drum (WAV file) on to it and set that patch as a one shot playblack. So Every-time I hit the left pedal it plays the WAV file ‘once’. Hence I can hit it over and over and get that 4 to the floor kick drum vibe . Let me know if you need more detail
