One little addition to #3: of course it can sometimes sound good and make transitions sound nice and fluent. But very often it sounds just bad. It's more about the 'messy and accentuated' combined with open strings. Not just the open strings themselves. See point 5.1, do you notice I'm keeping it clean? All I'm saying is be careful not to smack it into everything, because it's difficult to get it out of your system :)

I was going to take issue with #3 - I think it can be used very effectively especially when playing out of G since the open strings (selectively of course) are in the right key. I believe John Lennon did this extensively. So your redeeming comment her is much appreciated. I also would suggest a few other techniques that I have found work to improve on basic strumming. 1. Play an arpeggio for dramatic effect instead of the usual strum pattern - this works for example when the melody goes for the "hook" note(s). 2. The sound of silence! Carefully placed breaks in the strumming can highlight a piece - it also shows the audience that the guitarist is accompanying the singer or lead instrument and not just banging away! 3.Runs and fills. Depending on the genre of music you are playing (particularly Bluegrass, Old Time Fiddle music etc.) the use of runs and fills can help to make the music sound more articulate. They should be used sparingly though - bluegrassers who has perfected their G run, please note!
@andydwyer27336 жыл бұрын
I mean there’s still a little bit of the “openness” in the transitions. No one can change between chords immediately and perfectly without some of that. I think the main point is to not emphasize those transitions to the point where they stand out. It’s definitely not as discernible when you try to make your changes fast and smooth, but if you listen hard enough, I’m sure you’ll here a little bit of it regardless

Dear Paul, I was running restless, searching for that perfect tune, trying to reach it by half structured hours of playing, yet patiently waiting for the day it would finally emerge ... perfect, just complete. No side buzz, no vibration, just one clean strum, and a couple of perfectly played single notes to accompany it. After watching this video of yours I finally understood: What is essential for food should also find appliance with our guitar, we need to show it love and appreciation, warmth and a tender feeling of gratefulness. Then it will give you this gratitude of a complete sound. You are such a sympathetic warmhearted guitar philosopher, had I the funds, I would inscribe into you acoustic course today. But since I am a bit limited in that direction I will use your lessons and pair those with mine, use my creativity and find a perfect way to structurize about two hours every day into finding that completion in my tune like you seem to have found. All the best, and best regards, Marc Ps: It also allows me to feel a very peculiar kind of gratitude finally knowing that you are from the Netherlands, and that it was a Dutch accent I was hearing all along, rather than a Scandinavian.

I think that is why he titles that point "why are you even doing this?" -- you should do it for a reason, not because it is the only way you can play. It of course has a musical purpose (I' like the sound myself) but he's right that beginners (like me) do use it as a crutch to sound good quickly without advancing chord-changing skill. I guess a good test of whether a person is using it musically or out of laziness to to make sure you can play it both with and without the transition strum.

Wake me up is a perfect example of a song that DOES NOT do that. The quick strumming part is just the chord, not open strings! Perfect example to proof my point, thanks ;)

@@PaulDavids I just pulled some examples out of my head how I heard them or thought..wake me up is dancing on those transitions but yes mostly they are chords not open strings now when I look at it my bad but still many songs use it . Anyways you explained it all nicely in the pinned comment so good job on listening and taking time to give feedback.👍

Bonsoir Paul, enfin un toto sous-titré en Français, plus facile à comprendre et tellement plus agreable à suivre. Je viens de me reabonner car je vous trouve génial. Merci

I've been doing most of the things you said and even the thing you said I shouldn't do, not all of the time but it's in there sometimes. You're right, it is lazyness and I don't need to be doing it lol thanks for making me aware.

Paul, in your demonstration (2:43) you were strumming the open strings on the half beat (up stroke) during the chord transitions. (which you went on to say we shouldn't do). We all do it without knowing it; even you! ! Love your stuff by the way.

Sometimes there is a reason for it, but you shouldn't do it all the time. That was basically the message ;)

I learned to fingerpick first then strumming which I'm still learning lol

I learned finger picking first, too. I played banjo before guitar, I think that might be why... Its a hard habit to break!
