HK SL8 - Civilian G36 or Just a Futuristic Looking German Collectible

Thanks to the internet I found a deal too good to pass up on a HK SL8 - and this is my first close up.
Is it really a civilian version of HK’s legendary G36 or is it just a very interesting (hopefully) German rifle.
