Musics: Night of Nights Sakuya's theme, Black Mesa Source theme. I have no idea why this old crap is getting so much views now. I'm a bit disappointed that i used wrong rendering settings, that's why the screenshot animation looks laggy, even though its supposed to look bad. Took probably 14-18 hours to make this. (one of my first animatios, btw) I used over 900 screenshots and 30-40 video clips. Programs used: Sony Vegas Pro 12, Dxtory, Garry's mod. This was mental and I loved every bit of it. Also the Reb and the combine cooperating was cool. I never thought I would see both sides help each other to try and escape. Then they got sucked into a turbine. That was hilarious.

I had no idea where I was going when I started this post, but I'll just leave it up anyway cause I feel like I really have to let go of these troubled thoughts. I played Deathmatch for like three hours just one day like five or six years ago now, had fun but felt like the game was dead even then. I'm really shocked to hear that anyone even *thinks* about it nowadays. Not just because it's old, and certainly not cause I don't think it's fun, but just because, sometimes, I feel like the only person in the world that can play something like Deathmatch and think it's fun, or if not, at least understand why anyone else might like it. Quake Champions for example. What the hell? 500 active players? Like, across the whole planet? Not the same game, obviously, but it's a fairly recent (not to mention *free*) title in the game franchise that laid the foundation for Half-Life both in terms of the software, and the actual gameplay. There must be something I'm missing. Did everyone else grow out of video games? Are they inaccessible? Do people just not bother, assuming the game is dead like I have?
@TheD7362 жыл бұрын
Well, there's not been any team or individual death match game since that has -a highly moddable engine, allowing for free and easy custom games -a physics engine that is integrated directly into gameplay via the gravity gun being a default weapon and maps being littered with random shit to throw at people -a gameplay loop dictated by a mixture of skill, level comprehension, and quick respawns with 0 commute to gameplay, and a priority on making sure the player has fun whether playing alone or with friends Those things aren't priorities in the industry anymore. If you make a moddable game, how are you supposed to pump microtransactions and DLC purchases out of people and expect them to pay for what modders could do for free? Why would we build a gameplay mechanic around technology like a physics engine in a competitive shooty game? That relies on intentional prop placement and consideration during level design. Why would we design a gameplay loop that has little to no wait time between respawns, connecting and gameplay and fun? That's not gonna keep people playing forever like a Pavlovian money trap. It's about as much long term income with as little short term payout as possible. Hl2 deathmatch had no matchmaking, no concept of trying to appeal to a competitive demographic, no unlockable models or anything. It felt a lot more arcadey in that way. It was really basic, but it was fun. I know that this isn't necessarily the full answer, but in my opinion this set of reasons is why games like hl2 death match, even though it was basically just a cheap tie-in for half life 2, won't be made by triple A devs in this day and age. It didn't TRY to make people into gaming addicts, it just was a fun toy to play with that came free with HL2. And with any fun toy comes fond memories of simpler days.
