I prefer HLG3 over SLog3 on my A7SIII as well. Underexposed footage can be easily compensated. HLG3 seems to have better shadows vs SLog3 better highlights.

Just shoot in s-log3 sgamut3cine with +32 saturation and then drop the saturation in davinci first node from 50 to 25. And voila you get good slog3 quality.

with the ZV-E10? I noticed that even with slog 2 and sgamut3cine it's starting to slightly fall apart. not noticeable but I could see it in the spectrum. also, why boost the saturation first and then tone it down again in post?

As I was expecting... HLG had deeper blues and darker blacks which I personally like, based on what you're doing with each of these. HLG wins IMO!

I agree! I kinda liked s-log2 with the sgamut.cine for the skintones but hlg3 just „pops“ 😂 the matrix color mode with s-log2 is a bit too magenta for my liking but also very easy to grade. i might test some other picture profiles on the future.

I tend to like HLG as well, even though S-LOG3 has more flexibility when editing. Besides, S-LOG3 has a minimum ISO of 800 on my A7R3 and an ISO of 1000 on my Sony ZV-1. Even after editing and applying an appropriate LUT, the video still looks washed off. Perhaps, I just don't have enough skill in editing, HENCE, I choose to stay with HLG-3. But, looking around for my FX30, which one is better?

@@halimrahmanwith my RX100 VII, I feel HLG-2 to be very good option. It’s a bit less aggressive than HLG-3. For grading, I never use any LUTs for color space conversion. Instead, I use a color managed workflow to (semi-)automatically transfer from camera color space into timeline color space. Those transfer functions built into Davinci Resolve are way more accurate than any LUT can ever be.

i think slog-2 is slightly muted and hlg is slightly too saturated in greens and magentas. so slog-2 is easier on the eye, plus you can use the stock sony lut to quickly and easily expose slog-2

Hi David, thanks for making this video. I wonder which picture profile you think has the best performance in low light situations. Normally I shoot with pp10 HLG3, but sometimes I found obvious color banding at the sky area. I'd love to know what's your take on this. Thanks in advance!

They both look great. But with my setup, (no monitor) hlg3 is easier to expose imo using the exposure meter like you said ~.3 over and zebras to 75+ hlg3 seems easier for me to see what I'm filming on the dinky zve10 screen

absolutely! HLG is just much easier to work with. SLOG isn’t worth it for me, especially because i tend to like the colors in HLG better

i must say, the HGL3 BT2020 wins all the way in comparison to the Matrix mode. Simply because you can see the separatioin of the colors in the background clearly. HOWEVER the Slog 2 wins generally :) at the very end id like to thank you for the Video man, i enjoy watching your stuff a lot.. hope you make a little short 5 or 10 or 15 min Vid about your color grading in DaVinci :)), would love to learn from some more from you on the topic.

I just watched a video today comparing those two cameras, and they had a perfect summary. a6400 is for shooting video/photos of others (videographer), and the ZV-E10 is for shooting videos of yourself (vlogger). So, depending on your use case, that should help guide you.

Both have the same sensor and functions... A6400 have viewfinder but zv-e10 doesnt have one... For photography both are good..

Thats weird... When i tried the picture profiles that you recommend the image of the zv-e10 becomes very grayish, faded, lack of colors. But in your example the image barely changes.

yea that’s normal. when shooting in a picture profile, you’ll have to grade the footage later on, meaning convert it into the right color space & make your color adjustments.

People will spend weeks testing settings, but won't take 5 minutes to read the official Sony e10 user manual: "This camera's S-Gamut setting does not support the whole S-Gamut color space; it is a setting to achieve a color reproduction equivalent to S-Gamut". Same goes for HLG, pray as much as you want rec2020 does not exist in 8bit, you are also getting a color reproduction. If you want to shoot log, don't but an e10 vlogging camera.

Most people do not understand Logarithmic Gamma Curves and WideGamut Color Spaces... SLog2 beats HLG anytime. You just need to stop using LUTs and use COLOR SPACE TRANSFORMS.

Word of advice for your future videos: gotta stop with the jump cuts :/ it's lazy filmmaking/video editing and the only people who should be doing it are vloggers since they are long session takes.

that’s not gonna happen in the near future unfortunately. i’m not a native english speaker and struggle with getting more than 2 sentences together in one take. while i’m getting better with this, i still have a long way to go. this isn’t a stylistic choice, it’s just that i can’t do it better 🤷‍♂️ i’m trying to improve on it though.

For an info/tutorial video like this, I prefer short and sweet so cutting out all the junk is great for me for videos like this. But that's just me.
