Today, while vacationing with my family at Barcelo Maya Colonial in Mexico, I looked offshore and saw what I instantly recognized as the outline of an AOPV vessel. I went to confirm her presence on an internet vessel tracking site to confirm that it was indeed HMCS HARRY DEWOLF a few kilometres off shore between the Yucatan peninsula and Cozumel. What a surprise to me that I traveled all the way to Mexico for my first sighting of this amazing class of ships. I don't know where she was going or what her mission was but I wish the ship and her crew fair winds and following seas! Hopefully, sometime in the next few years, I will get to board her on a Great Lakes Tour.

A number of people here are complaining these ships cannot fight a war. The class's name says it all. They are offshore patrol ships and no navy in the world would use these type of ships for high intensity warfare. They're meant for sovereign and law enforcement patrols in the artic and elsewhere for which they are well suited. I don't understand why commentators here want to arm ice breakers for serious ASW or ASuW as you'd be using a hull form not optimized for it nor is it necessary. Even the US Navy doesn't do it. I do think these ships need a bigger gun though and I wouldn't be surprised to see them retrofitted with the Halifax class's 57mm gun when they're retired. For serious surface warfare, the navy is getting what it needs in the CSC which will be one of the most heavily armed frigates in the world.
@patton3rd12 жыл бұрын
Yep, most Navies operate lightly armed patrol ships in addition to major surface combatants. They fill a role. However, it would probably be beneficial if they had more defensive weapons, such as a CIWS

@Royal Canadian Navy - Im more interested in the Type 026 than this toothless boat. If the DeWolf class is meant to patrol the artic then it must be also designed to withstand Russian agression or any other nation that would be interested in the North. From an underpowered turret to having an early missile warning system with no ability to shoot down said missile, this boat leaves much to be desired and appears to be only used to ferry our military from point a to point b in the north to play public relations. Im sorry, fixing freezers in communities is not the work of the military - it's nice and all that, and a welcome side bonus to what the true function of a military is. I get you're all happy you finally got new boats after decades of neglect and are trying to sell that to us - real Canadians know you need new boats, new subs, new everything. Instead of propping up the DeWolf, you should be telling everyone that it's a glorified tugboat that isnt suited to truly defend our borders from hostile nations. Maybe then youll get some more funding... or boats that are actually useful. Im sorry, it's a nice boat but it is severely lacking.

Chris. So we literally spent millions of six brand new vessels that only have a singular peacetime role. At the very least it should have a 20mm Phalanx CIWS to protect this very exspensive vessel from aerial attack. At the very least it should also have 1 missile launcher. A SINBAD will do, and 1 other 25mm facing aft augmenting its forward 25 mil. It's as slow as a tugboat. Therefor it should have a much better defensive armament suite. In wartime emergency. Two of these should be able to replace an RCN frigate to protect a Canadian port from hostile air attack. So said frigate can go to literal war across exspansive oceans with a NATO fleet.

They do have automatic machine guns and small cannon that will probably be finicky in Arctic conditions; however, I suppose that we can always yell "please stop" over handheld megaphones, should be need arise! This is not just for domestic Coast Guard use. If we are investing in Naval vessels for the next 50 years, you would think that they would be adequately equipped for obvious possible eventualities, including war!

@@chrisl.9845 Compared to the Russian patrol vessels that are under construction (and are to be armed with missles) the RCN variant is underarmed despite being the same size. Given that the Russians & now the Chinese are intruding into our Artic waters, ASW capabilities would have been useful.
@chrisl.9845 Жыл бұрын
@Roman Dacil V if you are referring to the 22160 project, their weapon systems are "proposed" they are not actually fitted with them. And the ship is actually a "miniature warship" it was never originally designed to be used for patrol. Russian class designators are extremely loose and do not follow the actual description. Again, they claim it is a patrol ship, it is not due to is weapon systems. A patrol vessel is not meant to be armed "to the teeth". And for your situational awareness, the Russian vessels that were given so much weaponry are basically useless. They constantly have power plant issues and cannot have multiple systems running at the same time. You do understand that "ASW and ASuW" are warfare, it's in the name "warfare" if naval battles are required, then noone will be using a patrol ship. When you are patrolling, you won't use an MLRS or a Tank, you'll use a patrol pathfinder with minimal gear to get the job done. The reason that Russian and Chinese put heavier weapons on their so-called patrol ships is because their actual warships are useless and falling apart. And now using patrolships in a warfare setting, these ships are useless and falling apart. Seeing the evidence of the constant and utter failure of Russian and Chinese ships firsthand, I know just because they look like they have more weapons, they can't use half of them, and the other half ls capabilities are diminished due to their horrendous construction and maintenance.
