The several female matelots i know, never once mentioned any prejudice or bias. They raved about what a great job they had and how much they enjoyed being part of a ships company. But then this is 2023 and I suppose they are still folk out there who complain about how women were treated in the Middle Ages. We now live in an age of the perpetually offended

WRNS Did a great job of Support to RN Ratings and Ociffers, with their shore jobs, They are not really welcome as lady sailors, they have brought all the female problems to the Fleet, To the servicemen and to their wives and girlfriends This has been proved by the many many broken marriges, commissions, and rating discharges It does not take brain science, to stick a man and a woman together in a room for six months and nothing will happen Infact with many men in a room at a Disco, things will happen in an evening not six months

So you’re saying the problem is with the matelots. They can’t keep it in their trousers, whether going ashore overseas or with Wrens on board. If they decide to cheat on a wife or a girlfriend that’s their lookout

​@@servicekid7453you aren't a matelot are you. It's quite a different thing on a battleship cheek by jowel 24/7. The Wrens were all gorgeous & on a ship just squeezing past each other male to male is fine but male & female is another. You saw once a male sailor with just his towel on going for a shower with a Wren in that corridor that's life on a naval vessel & that's an issue. I respect the Wrens & what theyve achieved is laudable but the male sailors know how it is & we've had rape accusations when on a all male ship it wouldn't have occurred. Then there's homosexual & Trans issues too, tho there has always been a bit of homosexual activity on a Navy ship, but only because there's no women on board! Why not just have a all women Navy ship & see how they get on without male muscles around.

Of course, RN Ratings and "Ociffers", and WREN's on-shore establishments don't have relationships that lead to broken marriages and so on? That's "brain science" too. And on "Runs Ashore " a little dalliance isn't cheating on the wife and child, the fiancee and the girlfriend that's OK, is it? That doesn't have consequences? Nothing immoral there either, is there? Out of sight, out of mind. That's "brain science" too.

Pretty sad that Bob Hawkins career was bolloxed because of his personal opinion about women at sea. He wasn’t rude or condescending, he just spoke openly about how it affected him. It must’ve been a severe shock for career sailors to have to share their workspace and living accommodation with females and this doc was made only a few years after the first wrens went to sea. Hawkins was basically punished for speaking the truth….typical of British politics.
