This is a 50 min TV programme from 1992 about HMS Invincible, presented by Mary Goldring. I found this on an old VHS cassette. Check out my other videos for more Air Show footage from the 1980s/1990s/2000s.

I saw HMS Ark Royal (R07) in 2011 in Portsmouth when it was decommissioned. It looked to be in excellent condition. I’ve seen other 30 year old warships that looked knackered. Shame they didn’t keep one as a museum, or floating helipad.

Interesting to compare this to a QE class carrier (three times as large) + F35s (one or two generations ahead of the harrier). Even with the strains on the national budget there has been no question of cutting the new carriers unlike the sentiment post Cold War. Also lol about the computer literate captain.

Who the hell is this presenter, she seems intent on making the Royal Navy look incompetent, ineffective and outdated, she asks some really inane comments and gives the impression that she hasn’t got a clue what the navy, and more importantly, HMS invincible, is in operation to achieve. As a military veteran I find her approach offensive and demeaning. 🤬😔😡🇬🇧🏴

I take offence at the 849 bags being described as lash-ups. The radar was super reliable and way ahead of anything Ivan had. Maintenance on the radar was super simple and I can only remember two faults from three aircraft over two years.

@hull2942 жыл бұрын
As opposed to the "Cold War "which wasn't a "shooting war".....she knows exactly what she's asking....she's asking about the capabilities of the ships & aircraft to prosecute a real war in a modern battlefield not some deterrent. You are obviously too young to know about the "Cold War" The Falklands war exposed the short falls of the navy, army & airforce.....it was a close run thing...closer than people knew at the time...victory was not guaranteed & that was largely due to the type/age/availability of the equipment & the reliance on civilian ships with very little RN amphibious ability. Maggie Thatchers cut backs had done a lot of damage ....other British governments had some responsibility too but she & her cronies were the worst .I know...I was in the army at the time....we had to jump though ridiculous hoops to save money in her moratorium. One small example I remember quite clearly was the 3 darns in the wooly pully fiasco.....you could not exchange a threadbare sweater unless it had 3 darns in it.Their were bigger ones like the Shah 1 tank...that was laughable or it would have been if she hadn't have made the development of the Challenger tank dependant on it & wasted billions in the process.
@MaxRank2 жыл бұрын
@@hull294 it was simply a joke based on a play on her words. The Cold War absolutely was a shooting war, you don’t need battlefield conflict to achieve that status. I watched Hermes sail back into Portsmouth at the ripe age of 7 that with some simple math will provide my age. Maggie had her short falls, but she had balls of solid brass. Tony Blair was a whimpering little coward which defined Britain at the time. The irony here is that he himself tried to use Maggie’s tactic in Iraq and failed miserably.

Minute 20:54, it is interesting that they mention only the fires in the Sheffield, the Galahad, and the Conveyor, but no word from the Invincible. Later, 35:40, they are seen practicing a direct air attack from a Super Etendard and the impact of an EXOCET (not another missile ... an exocet !!) on the ship, but the Invincible was never attacked huh !! Nerd. He was 30 miles from Ureta and Isaac's attack, and these two were two toddlers who mistook a frigate for an aircraft carrier. In addition, Harriers are seen passing flush with the aircraft carrier, pretending to be enemy planes, such as Isaac's story when he had to dodge the stern of the Invincible and escape to the starboard side. What a coincidence, right? Incredible material by the way. Very revealing!! Thanks for sharing.

It is unfortunate that Britain still has the price to pay for being an empire, even though most tax payers today never had a taste of it. Unless we are willing to give up our remaining outposts, for which we have protection obligations, we will permanently be burdened with the costs of being ready to fight invaders. As we continue our 120 year decline, from being the richest country in the world, it is inevitable that one day we will be humiliated through lack of money and will have to cede territories. If politicians thought more than five years ahead, maybe they would decide to issue a standing threat of automatic nuclear retaliation on any country who attacks our dependencies.
