HMS Iron Duke 1/600 Airfix: Building, Painting, Weathering

Hi! Thanks for visiting the channel!
In this video, I am building HMS Iron Duke from Airfix, an older kit and participant of the recent Vintage poll, but I have looked forward to this for quite a while, and I have enjoyed making it!
The camera footage of the oil wash on the hull was lost, so there is the transition from a clean hull to an eroded underwater section.

Wow you are Really Really good I wish i could be half as good as you I've just into making models I've got a 1/72 Lancaster and I have done a hurricane and used humbrol enamel but you can tell the paint has went on thick and any detail like panels has been covered up with the thick coating plus when i was brushing the paint on it was as if the paint was not sticking and getting moved around i think mabe getting humbrol paint thiners as the paint is to thick to stick I've been watching a lot of modeling videos most nearly all use spray guns that's a bit to advanced for me at the moment I don't really want to start on other models and ruin them till I learn a bit more you make it look sooo easy 😢

I like those 1/600 airfix kits a lot! I have recently acquired a box filled with around 25 kits for 20€, some of them are damaged or incomplete, but they sure are cool to have! You have many interesting models on your channel, subscribed to yours too! Looking forward to wachting your Type 45 Destroyer, i have one from Trumpeter on my stash and always wanted to build it!

Lovely work, my friend. Thanks. This kit always fascinated me as a kiddo because of the unusual shape of the ship and the five big guns. After Hood and Bismarck, this was the third ship I ever built. Love your eye for detail with the extras you supplied. Bravo!

That was a fantastic build sir well done I look forward to the 1/200 scale build, my only ever ship build was the old Airfix HMS Warspite can't remember the scale and that was in about 1968-69, 6thought it was a good kit back then, I have just turned 65, so I was about twelve-year-old, take care and keep safe.

Hi Les! I am very glad you like it! The 1/200 destroyer makes some problems, it is still in separate subassemblies, but i hope to finish it this week! I really like the airfix 1/600 kits as they are quite small and easy to make, and have some ships no other producer makes models of, especially the more modern frigates and destroyers of the falkland war. Those are really cool! Happy birthday! (if it was recently)

HMS Iron Duke 1914, lead ship of the Iron Duke class and Admiral Jellicoe's flag, of the Grand Fleet and at the Battle of Jutland 1916. A great model of a great ship even though the scuttles are way too big

very nice work, if you don't mind, when scratch building the mast, a small round file to cut in slightly which gives a much better finish then round rod glued to round rod. For photoetch, PVA which won't stick fingers and will dry clear. You've done a very nice job though

I really want a 1/350 version of Iron Duke, she's a gorgeous battlewagon! Only just beaten out by her battlecruiser equivalent HMS Tiger for beauty, in my humble opinion! Shame the Combrig kit for Tiger costs an absolute fortune! No idea why, though!

Is this a recent boxing? I had one of these about ten years ago and many of the parts like davits and casemate guns were bent or broken, despite everything being in the original sealed bags. On some places I had trouble finding the parts because there was so much flash. That said, it is a great kit of an iconic ship. White Ensign Models do a lot of etched sets, including generic ones in 1/600. They are top quality. Inspiring build. Thank you. Maybe I'll try it again.

Hi! This kit was in the box from 1973, but the original tooling is from 1970. For being that old and long stored, i didnt encounter much broken parts, only smaller parts. But i think this is an airfix problem in general, that their sprues are too floppy in the boxes. I wasnt aware of PE in 1/600, will have to look to White Ensign! Thanks!

Nice work Adding a few bits of PE, even under scale at 1/700, really makes the model come alive. I know you haven't rigged this one, but I'd suggest getting a handful of fine and very fine brass rods and tubes for your spares box. They're quite cheap and better for making masts out of than stretched plastic sprue as they won't bend if you decide to rig them. Anyway, you've done the Iron Duke proud.

Hi alric! Thanks, i also think the small PE parts make it look more interesting, and the out-of-scale is hardly recognisable for me as an inlander who hasnt seen much ships in reality! :) I think thats a great idea, i often thought to get some brass rods, there are many applications for them!

Some additional things you can do to this model, sand off the over-sized port hole rings, and drill out correct sized port holes (you drilled out the barrels after all!!). I believe the bridge superstructure is a little too high and needs to be dropped down a bit. I would also check photos before putting on the clunky booms and excessive boats around the middle turret, as I just don't think they are shown in most photos of this class of ship. I'm tending to treat these 1:600 Airfix kits as just base models that require detailing, except for the Bismarck model which needs a complete rebuild of hull, deck and superstructures to get proportions somewhere close to right.

@@funinscale2892 The worst Airfix model I have struck so far is Bismarck. The number of changes you have to make to this to get it even close to authentic is truly eye watering. Fun challenge though. I'm completing it in time for the 80th anniversary of the sinking next month. Huge job getting it right.

Hi Jerry! yeah those airfix 1/600 ships are great fun to make! they are easy and quick, but you can still get nice models out of them! I will pet Berta for you! but only once, not that she will like you more than me! Honest to God I built this kit at least 45 years ago. Only bought it cause the ship had such a cool name, and I had never seen a ship before with a Q turret. And I have to ask, where did you get 1/600 Photo etch, I have never seen it before.

Hi Glen! I also like the name of the ship, Iron Duke sounds like someone important and impressive, but never got around googling it! But you don't get called "Iron" for no reason, i assume! The dreadnoughts have some great and beautiful designs. I cheated a little bit with the PE parts, i used some surplus PE parts from HMS Hood and HMS King George V in 1/700 from eduard, which i had left from previous or not-started builds, so it was nothing original for this kit, but i think it still makes a nice addition to an otherwise a little blank model!

@@funinscale2892 Yeah the Iron Duke was the nick name for the Duke Of Wellington. And yeah I think the PE added to the kit. Back when Airfix were doing those kits there was not a lot of competition. Sometimes kit bashing those old kits can be an absolute blast.

@@funinscale2892- there isn't a real difference between 1:600 vs. 1:700 fir doing what you have done. The tailing might beca bit small if someone really looked but the doors and mast details wouldn't be noticed. Did you have to replace those scratch masts a few times? It looked like you had done so a couple of instances.

You could get an HMS Dreadnought in 1/350 from trumpeter, they have some different versions, it is not the same, but similar in looks and time period!

It's so 1970's. I built Hood, Bismarck, Eugen and Ark Royal back then and the kit quality looks much the same.

Hi Mark! This model is indeed from 1973, the mold is from 1970, but the box is in the 1973 variant, so you are entirely correct with the time! The model was fun to make, although its not as detailed as modern ones, but making them is still great!

@@funinscale2892 It shows the advances in quality since back then. For a kid aged about 10 or 11 when I built mine they weren't difficult which was part of the attraction. I moved on to Tamiya German Armour in my late teens. I loved building the 88mm and halftrack to pull it. Sadly it's been over 30 years since I built anything.

Hi Douglas! I used 1/700 PE parts from an HMS Hood and King George V Upgrade set from Eduard, it was not designated for this ship. I think i forgot to mention it in the video, sorry for the confusion!

Hi Liu! The PE is not included, i used some "residual" PE parts from other models i have already finished, i should have mentioned that in the video! I also forgot to mention that the video footage of the oil washes in the end was lost, thats why there was this transition from clean to dirty hull :D

I don't think it is acquirable in stores anymore, i got it 2nd hand from another modeller, and it was around 12€, 14 USD. So it is just about getting lucky and finding a good offer, maybe on ebay
