Iron Duke was once involved in a friendly fire incident with the HMS Simmerson.

I have seen german air recon photos of Scapa Flow where Iron Duke is correctly labelled. Interestingly the upturned hull of SMS Derfflinger was still in Scapa Flow during WW2

As a retired newspaper editor I would give, well, a lot for that picture on my front page. Great photography! 🥰

The book "Epics of Salvage" describes her salvage after the first bombing. The event was a wake up call to the poor state of salvage equipment at that time. Subsequent improvements to equipment and procedures helped save many vessels during the war.

In the photo at 16:40 showing her in Scapa in 1939 with 2 R-class in the background, notice the twin 5.25-inch DP mount installed on the aft end of Y-barbette. At the time, I believe she was being used as a gunnery training ship. Of course, the 5.25 would wind up on the KGV class battleships, Dido-class cruisers, then ultimately Vanguard.

Thank you. Interesting that Admiral Jellicoe kept his flag on Iron Duke for the battle of Jutland although HMSs Barham, Valiant, Malaya and Warspite (+ 1st and 2nd destroyer flotillas) comprised the 5th battle squadron were present.
@ihategooglealot37417 ай бұрын
The QEs were designed as a "fast squadron", Jellicoe wisely retained his Flagship. Sadly Beatty's ego was more important to him than the fleet and he chose a QR not a Revenge or Iron Duke.

The 4 QE's were with the Battle Cruisers under Beatty's "command". Wasn't that uncommon for Admirals to sail on less powerful ships, personal preference.

Another informative and interesting video of one of the longest serving dreadnoughts of her time.

I would like to point out that when at sea or in port, most of a sailor's time (about 95%) is spent training of some kind. 13 year USN veteran.

Having HMS Iron Duke in such a prominent position in Scapa Flow during the Second World War makes me wonder if it shouldn't have been named HMS Decoy. After all, it was better for it to receive damage than another ship that was on active duty.

Does anyone know a bit more about the encounter of Iron Duke with SMS König at Jutland? The way I understood it, Iron Duke first engaged König when the German line ran into the Grand Fleet for the first time, scoring a single hit on the roof of König's forward conning tower which wounded the Squadron commander, Rear Admiral Paul Behnke. After Scheer ran into the British line for a second time, Iron Duke again engaged König and scored 7 hits within 6 minutes, while König reduced speed and laid a smokescreen to allow the following German battleships to turn in somewhat good order. Most of these 7 hits would be concentrated on the forward part of the ship, with one hit aft causing considerable damage, although König's fighting ability wasn't really impaired. Is this take correct? I have seen claims that the 7 hits already happened during the 1st encounter, not the 2nd, but this seems somewhat questionable. Would be happy for any info :)

Great video just 1 thing why do all KZbin videos point to poor shooting of the grand fleet and not comment about the High seas fleet returning fire when the two fleets engaged I think the RN landed 70 shell hits compared to 1 shell hit and 1 torpedo

A powerful ship with a powerful name Her gunnery at Jutland was outstanding for the technology of the time and if not the the poor fuses in the AP shells the exceptional luck the Germans enjoyed all through that battle would have run out. To say the Germans "managed to slip away" is very misleading, it implies the British GF could have engaged the HSF but were out maneuvered when the reality is as soon as 1stSG (lead by the man called Baby Killer by the civilian vitims) finished their bombardment of undefended seaside towns, they run for it at fast as they could. Considering how long it takes to raise steam 1stSG was in little danger. It all comes down to presentation doesn't it.

In battlefield V they reuse model iron duke model from battlefield 1 to some thought she was didn’t do any combat during ww2 when she was converted into training ship removing some of main turrets after ww1.
