In June 1961 I entered the Royal Canadian Navy and did my basic training at HMCS Cornwallis. One of more than 200 kids who began less than 50 finished. I was 17 and I was one of those who became a member of a proud tradition. More than 50 years later I am still proud of what I did back then and proud of the MEN I served with! Looking at these young people in this video I wonder , was I ever that young? My god but I would give anything to see some of my old shipmates again. READY , AYE READY !!

Well done, folks! Much more complex procedure than mine when I passed out at Raleigh in Class 413 in 1961. Lee Enfield 303 rifles, more wieldy but less complicated routine to drill with those (No changing sides, and butt down on the floor when at ease - mind you, we DID have "ground riflres" to contend with...). Only solely electrician class to win the Cock Trophy before that time, yet our routine was so much simpler than this one - and we didn't have to worry about clashing with another class!

Thanks for this. I passed out from Raleigh in 1967 (Drake 44 class) -c/o PO Storer and GI Wiggy Bennett - the one and only day I did something that made my parents proud!

I was there in 73 and went to Sultan, to my deepest regret I never completed part 2 training. I was 15 and home sick! Nearly went back in 76 but joined the Police and did 30 years but I always stop and think ,on the 13 of March every year, what if.

My passing out was at Ganges in 1975, POGI Archibald was my instructor, met up with him many years later on Minerva. Totally different chap from Ganges days', but it was his job to make men out of boys, which he certainly did achieve!

We also had two guards when I was there 1972. Biggest regret was leaving RN after just over 7 years. If I could go back to being 16 I'd do it all over again. I still have my Nos 1s, 7 creases in bell bottoms but can't get them past my knees now!

Passed out in 73. When my class turned into line to March past the flag pole, the band started playing Liberty Bell. I don't know how we all didn't crack up.

Ah, brings back memories of May 1983. Guest of honour, the First Sea Lord Admiral John Fieldhouse with full RM band. As the "Class Leader" of my class it was the proudest day of my life so far. Does anyone remember the Gunnery Officer, Lt. "shovelface" Andrews? he scared the shit out of me, I was 23 years old and had previously worked in a scrap metal yard and as a builders labourer, so I wasn't exactly a shrinking violet, but he was one hell of a guy believe me.

Ah memories. I passed out there, as part of the guard, in February 1991. Do you still get to party at the Carbeille? Our inspecting officer was Lt. Gen. Sir Henry Beverley, Royal Marines Commandant General. And then on to the RNSS. Good effort Smudge, good effort shipmate.

Lyrics Heart of Oak David Garrick/Dr. Boyce, 1759 Come cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer, To add something more to this wonderful year, To honour we call you, not press you like slaves, For who are so free as the sons of the waves? Heart of oak are our ships, Jolly tars are our men, We always are ready, Steady, boys, steady, We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

@richardvp1 I see your point. What was I thinking when I didn't tell the parade staff about the ridiculousness of two guards. And why oh why didn't we, the recruits who had been in for just 9 weeks, tell the Captain he wasn't up to RN standards.

Don't care what ye says , Jennies in square rig just don't look right. And surely it is one guard, formed by one division with an East and West wing.. And it's nice to see a mere passing out parade doesnt interfere with sports. And where did all those trees come from. They were not there in 76. ;o)

Not just that. That's usual patrol boats that do that. The bigger ships like queen elizabeth witch I now currently serve on we go around the world and give support against rebels that make attacks like b tech taiban. We also are first responders of a war starts

Aye, just play the game. Basic training is all about bullshit. You'll get a lot of it. Just do what they say, when they say and never complain! They want to see you put in max effort in everything. Basic training is nothing like the real navy. It's 9 weeks of bullshit to push you to your limits, but you'll get an amazing career out of it. Good luck with your training.
