@@elisebrummert1225 The ones to feel sad about are the attachments, especially the ones from the Individual Ready Reserve. Far too many IRR soldiers ignored the call up, but the ones that showed up did a great job. My National Guard unit was able to field 6 radar sections instead of 5 because of agumentation from the IRR, but these are individuals called up from towns across the country. They may be the only one deploying from that area. They get no send off, no welcome, and their families have no formal support structure. We had one from rural Wisconsin and another from Phoenix. When they had admin problems , we tried to help them, but from a thousand or more miles away, it is not easy.

lindowan123 Coldstream Guards are not Scottish, they are the only one of the five Guards Infantry regiments that recruits from specific parts of the UK. It's recruiting area follows the route taken by the original regiment under the command of General Monck from Coldstream in the Scottish Borders to London immediately prior to the restoration of the Monarchy. The other four, even though three (Scots, Irish and Welsh) have national ties with Scotland, Ireland and Wales respectively recruit throughout the Commonwealth of Nations.

@@bombercommand7187 fair point. Just a little info for you, about 30 years ago (jeez is it that long ago 😱) I was in the process of becoming a British Army Officer. Before taking my RCB in November 1991, the Army sent me to Belize for three weeks in late August/ September with the Battalion sponsoring me. Just before I went out the “Options for Change” cuts to the armed forces ere announced. Each recruiting division for the infantry was to lose one battalion. The way King’s Division (the recruiting division for my Battalion) managed this was the Royal Irish Rangers merged with the Ulster Defence Regiment. While in Belize I started chatting to a Captain from the Rangers attached to my Battalion who was pissed off. Most of his Regiment were Irish Catholics from the Republic (including him!), merging with an almost exclusively Protestant unit was...interesting to say the least.
