Today, the 21st of October, is the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 against the French and Spanish fleets. HMS Victory is the first-rate battleship which found fame as the ship commanded by Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson in his historic victory. Tragically Nelson was hit by a musket ball fired from the Redoutable at the height of the battle, he was carried down to the Orlop deck and died three hours later. Launched 7th May 1765, HMS Victory cost £63,176 and three shillings, she's 227 feet long and 51 feet across at the widest. It took around 2000 oak trees to create her, the hull being left to season for an unusual three years. At the moment HMS Victory is undergoing extensive repairs so covered in scaffolding. The decks become progressively lower, darker and more claustrophobic as you descend. Hard to imagine being on it at sea in the height of battle.

Wonderful ! .. decades ago one of the lower decks was painted red (because historians believed that this was to hide the blood when they were operating on the cannon fodder) I remembered this as a kid.. and when I returned to the vessel decades later as an adult.. I queired the tour guide as to where this deck was !!.. and I had the response that they thought it was inaccurate and so had removed the paint !! .. much like the dodgy paint job I had done on my house innit !! 😁 My great great great great great fat Grandmother was on one of these 'Men o' War' as some sort of cook !! ..you can Google the old bird.. her name is Dolly Peel !! lol So this couple of brothers are press ganged into the Royal Navy.. one has these huge ears ..and the other great big goggly eyes 👀.. so anyway the Petty Officer says the eyes.. you can be lookout !! lol So he climbs the mast.. and within minutes of leaving dock he yells down 'Spanish Man o' War ..on the horizon !' ..and the PO gets out his big telescope ..and sure enough he spots the ship as a tiny blip on the horizon !! .. and he says ''I see the vessel.. but how do you know its Spanish ??!!'' ..and the lookout says ''My brother can hear them speaking !'' 😁
