Good video man! #2192 sounds great....it was fun to watch it haul that coal train, a lot of neat hoppers in there, the DIXIE LINE hopper at 8:07 was my favorite.

Thanks Dan, I was surprised it pulled that whole train all by itself. That's 110 cars if I remember correctly. It's got loads of power.

Thanks Vinny. That was about 110 cars if I remember correctly. I was amazed too.

I love the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 and I especially love the Southern Pacific Cab Forward, but the Northfolk & Western Y6B 2192 model really gets me. I especially love how the coals in the tender are the highest point of the train. The DogHouse nevertheless is a really nice touch. And the fact that it’s strong enough to pull bricks makes it skyrocket to the top of the list. It’s the USA of the Model Train World

I would be more impressed if they got the exhaust note correct for their Y6bs. I hate to be critical since I'm not a modeler (lack the extra funds and time but have always been interested.) Maybe it's something that can be changed by the purchaser, but a Y would not have the "double chuff" (like two locomotives out of sync) common to simple articulateds since it is a true Mallet. That's been my only pet peeve with these models... regardless, I think they're impressive and would actually like to have one just to put in a display case.

Y6b mallets, like many compounds, were fitted with a valve which enabled them to be started as a simple. This was useful when starting from rest, as the power of a loco as a simple is considerably higher than as a compound. Once a certain speed was reached, the valve would be cut out, and the loco would then work as a compound. As the train would be rolling, its momentum would have meant that the power could be lower than when starting, and the benefits of compounding (more efficient use of steam, therefore less fuel needed) would kick in. Far from being peeved with the sound set up of these models, they have been praised for getting this right. Note how the "double chuff" disappears when the train speeds up.

@@FYCH45 This is true. I think it was around 10-15 mph or so they'd switch back to compound. A true work of engineering.

Look at the odd (moulded-in) bunch of "brackets" holding the front HANDRAILS together... I have never seen a Y class locomotive with railings like that! Where'd they come up with that?

In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, all the the front handrails were smoothly WELDED together...NO BRACKETS! Seems a lot of trouble for details that didn't exist...

Sweet locomotive dude. I don't think the video does justice to the sound. I have a sub woofer as part of my PC and it wasn't doing a whole lot. Anyway, looks good man!

I got home and was finally able to listen to it on my system, it does sound better and gives you the idea, but yeah, you need to hear it in person to fully appreciate it.

Also, the Y6B was a COMPOUND locomotive. No "double chuffs", except when starting a heavy train. Totally wrong...
