We are off to Tim Dumas' layout of the Kennecott Bingham Canyon mine in HO scale. Modeled to the look of the mine in 1960 as the mine was replacing the electric locomotives with diesel locomotives bought from, and still painted for, dozens of railroads.
*******************************************************************
We stop by the 2017 OT&W Ophir Tintic & Western Model RR Club winter show at Thanksgiving Point as well.
*******************************************************************
Tim is a member of the Lark and Bingham Canyon groups, which is where we met him. He has an extensive collection of rare photos of Bingham Canyon which he has bound into books as a fun hobby. Screwing around with history books you could say!!

Thanks again as always!!! Did you see our videos on this mine? The one shows how big it’s gotten. And now, two years later, it’s the same depth and width as the Grand Canyon. And a hundred twenty years ago it was a mountain!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ_Qc2V8otmGfc0

I lived in Utah in the early '60s and at the time Kennecott sponsored a weekly TV show of some kind. Their commercials always took you through some portion of the mining operation and were often the highlight of the evening (unlike commercials these days).

Hi. That was the Kenncott Neighborhood Theater. John Barlow did the voice over for the breaks. And big dynamic music. John jr was my best friend in the 4th grade. We would watch the show with his dad sometimes. Sunday night. An old but great movie with a 5 minute break 4 times per hour. Then there was Johns sister Treasure.... but that’s another story.

I have to take a moment to say just how well together your videos are. They are second to none in quality and are so informative. The Bingham Copper Mine is a slice of Americana that has made this country what is today. The fact that this is going full throttle in a time most copper mines are played out or not economically viable is amazing in it's own right. Though you can't visit the mine courtesy of Google Maps or Google Earth. I hate plugging them but, they have done such an awesome job as presenting quality, relatively accurate geographic data. Thse books Tim gave you are price less.Thank you for another awesome video documentary.

I've only recently discovered your channel, and I'm loving it. My favorites are the ones on 'Eureka', but this one was special to me. When you said "Local Lego Group" my ears perked up. I looked around the scene and sure enough there was my "old" friend Iso Vernon and his three kids. He's young compared to me, but I've known him literally since he was a baby. It was odd but in a good way to see someone I know well in one of your videos.

OK. OK! Uncle! This was a great video and I have finally gotten use to a couple of really cool wacky folks who go out on the loose with an excuse. Thanks for covering the train show. I've never been to any really big ones in my 51 years of modelling. My first will be next month on February 25th in San Jose, CA - about an hour an a half away from the Pacific Crest (my 5th HO layout under construction down stairs off the garage and shop). Ya'll must be of my generation because I loved Rat Fink. If you are ever in the Monterey/Salinas, CA area, maybe we can take him to dinner at our Olive Garden... now I'm hungry. It's only 0745 hours! Thanks a lot! I'm on a diet....

Technically Dale, the Lego Train celebrated its 50 year anniversary last year. The track the ULUG guys are using was produced in the 1990's-2000's. Lego has actually dramatically decreased train production in the last few years. Most of what you see in the show are "M.O.C's" which means "My Own Creations." Only a few of the Lego stuff on display is bought and built following official instructions. The only reason it seems relatively new is that Lego didn't start importing their trains to the U.S. until the mid 1970's, while Europe got them about a decade earlier. Any way onto the other model stuff. We were upset that the hobby show didn't even have an HO layout this year since that is arguably the highlight for us. The DRGW Modeling and Historical Society booth was actually rather fun though, and we also screwed around with the NMRA "crash loop" they had.

Yes we are all excited for Ogden. That place is huge. I am hoping that by the time Ogden rolls around my HO scale layout will be well under construction. My Dad and I are doing the benchwork this Saturday. Its a small switching layout, nothing to fancy; but that gives me hope the track work will be done quick and easy, and stuff will be running in a few months.

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. That’s a big mine but Bingham Canyon has usually been the biggest in the world. A few diamond mines are deeper. And a pit in South America is at times bigger but then Bingham moves back to the top. At this point the pit is roughly the same width and depth as the Grand Canyon in places. Almost a mile deep. Three miles wide. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ_Qc2V8otmGfc0

Pretty close Hull Rust was 5 miles across and 3 miles across! Most mining companies in Minnesota also used a bunch of separate pits and also were part underground.

The overall train show was great. About that mine, WOW! As small as I can get, now, is my Bride's O gauge stuff. Only have one complete SP Daylight Engine and full consist left in my HO; of which I had plenty at one time. Is it me or is HO and N just getting way to small to build in and on? Not really. I have heard it was "discovered" with the help of an old Spanish mine map. Back in the day there were thousands of these maps for sale, most 100% fraud, but as I understand, the Spanish did mine there and took the gold and silver and took off leaving very rich mines behind, and 100 years later the new comers just picked up where they left off. So they say... We are doing a few shows there on the live steam railroad.
