Tom you made me miss my old HO railroad! It had about 180 feet of mainline, and I loved attempting to pull very long trains.When I had all my 40' cars on (that's all I ever ran) The locomotive was breathing right down the back of the caboose! I like your way more! Also the normal location for about half of my wheels were in the cinders, here again I like your way better
@TheSantaFeGuy
@TheSantaFeGuy 7 жыл бұрын
I model Tehachapi in the 1990s, getting 5 locomotives to pull a 40 car train is no easy task on my layout. my cars don't way that much so that curves don't like the long trains. the grades average 2 percent so the engines wheel slip like mad to make the summit. also, at least on the SP side, a couple of the units are dummies to mimic broken locomotives
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 7 жыл бұрын
I don't mimic that. I just have a bunch of broken locos.

I worked as a clerk on Camas Prairie RR in Idaho and am absolutely blown away by this wonderful presentation. It brings to mind putting long trains together over steep grades and making it work despite the daily challenges. Seems a dream now as does the fantastic actuality of the Grand HO layout you discovered. Thanks very much...

Well done, folks. A great visit. I'm glad you brought up Tom's method of 3 time NMRA weight standards. I will need to add weight to many old pieces of my rolling stock as they are very light. New stuff comes pretty spot on. I began installing my track only two years after my accident and my eyes were "not right". Most of my time is spent correcting problem that I can now see. Extra weight may help keep stuff on the tracks. Now, if I could just figure out how to add weight to my steam fleet...
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 7 жыл бұрын
I've never had a problem putting on extra weight. Hum..... NOW with my trains.... I do have one loco, 1.20.2 scale, that weighs 45 lbs!!! Has a cab weight in the boiler that weighs 8 pounds!! Problem with that loco is keeping the gears from breaking loose from the axles. Had to pin them. THink I'l work today on taking off a bit of the "Other" weight I have added.......

Great video, very entertaining! What an awesome layout! Nice work on the scenery, weathering, and structures. So cool to see large trains working their way through a big layout. Also very clever in how he set up the footprint of the layout with the different islands and such. It helps separate different scenes of the layout and give a feeling of space . Helps create the sense that the train is "going somewhere" and not necessarily chasing its tail. Great work!

When My Dad got orders for Germany he was happy because him and my Uncle Bobboth E7 set their orders both were vets from WW2 and Korea. The Berlin wall went up we practiced nuclear drills at school a type of terror and you have a ring side seat to Nuclear weapons going.The Russians had 64 divisions of tanks that were 45 minutes from Berlin. These divisions of tanks the only thing that stopped them was the Davy Crockett nuclear weapon a recoil-less rifle. I remember once instant bad dream was doing a nuclear evacuation drill of getting civilians to the Rhamstein AFB. I shiver on the runway waiting to get on planes to evacuate. It got canceled couldn't be done. These were very scary for 7 YEAR OLD. It was PTSD I have that nightmare till this day.

Good kits too. I love me a passenger car! Any size, any type. except those Amfleet airplanes with train wheels. Ok I changed my mind. I like those too as long as I don't need to sit in one for a long time. Airplane seats are torture, so why did Amtrak make train cars like airplanes?

I was lucky to have great friends to give the best advise. Due to my unpredictable work schedule, very hard to get a great deal of help. I had a wonderful WWII vet friend of mine (Dave Morris) donate that cow or feed yard to the RR. His son Brian comes to this Model RR, to this day, and gets to see his dads work, cary on. It is a wonderful thing, and a singular honor for me.

I had a system. Well 3 different layouts with this system, where I broke it out into the "usual" A-B cab control. 2 throttle block system. BUT I had the A-B controlled by rotary switches. So instead of "A" always being throttle 1, it was anything I set the rotary to. And I had a fixed MRC, the REA wireless and DCC as the 3rd setting. So I could set the rotary to "3" and all blocks to A and the whole layout was now DCC. Or, set it to "1" and run from the MRC and so on. AND any block could be set to B and run from what ever power supply I wanted. So B could be set to 2 and all the blocks set to B ran from the REA wireless. And A from the MRC.Worked great, and I could run any DCC if someone showed up with that.
@gjslsffan
@gjslsffan 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. This DCC/DCC++/DCC+++++++++ are just a bunch of hype in my opinion. With proper block controls you can actually control you trains better, and much more realistic, in as far as not having another train in "YOUR SPACE or Assigned territory"

I bought the Tichy crane and it took me 5 hours to build, now I have to paint it. It is a very good kit like a good mechanic and machine builder I only read blueprints or schematics I don't read instructions it is confusing. There are very small parts that you need a magnifying glasses a good side cutter, liquid glue and a lot of patience.

If you think this model railroad was huge you need to come to the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley. They have a 5000 ft² HO layout. Plus, there are numerous artifacts on display as well. Quite possibly the best model railroad museum in the country. Be sure to make a trip next time you're in this area!

This was what my friend (and his brother) was going for in the 70's we had the hills, but we were struggling with derailing and traction. NONE were that long. We had dedicated multiple engine units to keep them from bumping one another which countered traction. That is soooo impressive. Loading the cars makes sense to keep them on track. Are the engines individually operated? We made a master loco with the pick up and plugged the other locos into the master.

Brad Taylor hi. Nope. Raw DC. But like 10 amps! So he can put I think 6 or 8 locomotives in a train. Two need to be at the back to keep the couplers from letting go just like on a real train, then take it to 12 volts and up the grade you go! But add one more locomotive and the 10 amp breaker blows.

@@ToyManTelevision BNSF runs these two mile coal trains here with two locomotives at each end. It's pretty rare to see a train with out both ends being powered. The only ones that aren't are the lumber trains which are really short, and the odd ball collections. About a month ago, they ran about 3 trains of 50 locos each to the port.

I'd bet that little train is called either an egg train or a super deformed. They make plane models like this quite a bit and they're really popular, for the sci-if crowd I know there's an X-wing and Colonial Viper available. I've not seen a train done like this but it is really cool.

Walthers put out a kit of two short(single truck) passenger cars in the '60s and '70s. I can't remember the names of the cars but I remember I bought one of each. One was a business car w/open rear platform. This train reminded me of those cars.

Well I made that little train locomotive from parts I had handy. The cars are indeed Walthers Oscar/Piker cars but the locomotive was a special challenge. I wanted to use about 1/4 of an F/E unit. My friend Matt had a single Alco 3 axle power tuck, and well the rest is..... and should be, history lol.

Have you guys heard of/been to Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany? If you haven't, I recommend looking it up. They've converted an old mill building into a gigantic automated HO scale railroad, but not only the railroad operates: they've got fully operational cars on roads, they've built an automated airport, and they're working on automating ships which actually navigate through a harbor.

I had a 251 car 5 unit train running, with all 5 units at the front. All cars are 4oz except for a few up front which are 8oz to keep from tipping with the drag behind them. The train had to climb a 2.5% grade at one location and spanned about 180 real feet.

@gjslsffan
@gjslsffan 3 жыл бұрын
You are right. They do work hard. I dont put 9 locomotives on a train that should need 4. A lot of lead has been added to these units for weight/traction, and yes they do get serviced on a regular basis. Some of my modeling friends dont like my torturing of model train locomotives. But I tell them, " I can rebuild them". But those locos are gonna pull their guts out.

Go out to Alhambra California and look for the railroad they have out there it's called the Sierra Pacific lines where the size of the layout is 70 viyeah spelled is 70 by 71' and it's they have at least 30 guys that run it for high speed main lines If you get a chance look for the video it was on VHS the last time I remember watching it and they had a camera in the engine and they were pulling a tank train GATX it was sweet to watch all this. I have been wanting to get over there for many years and even though I'm a truck driver and I drive-through the area off the I10I can never seem to find myself to have enough time to pull in shut my truck down and go in and watch this thing from beginning to end and they have everybody doing a specific job I do love the guy that Tom's his engines they look like SD40 - 2 or no I'm sorry SD Forties Maybe you can tell me if it's something different but the front end of those look route always reminded me of SD40 - 2.
