HO Scale OPS: Rock Island Switching

Filmed 03/11, 22/17
This week I have some more of Ron's Rock Island at work on the layout. Also a few cameos from KCS/TFM with a Canadian Pacific, and a Gateway Western manifest makes a surprise visit.
At the 17:55 minute point, we go from Saturday the 11th to Wednesday the 22nd. This is why we have a change in Rock Island power. It's not just a different set of locomotives, its a whole other switching job. For a couple of reason the session on the 11th was cut short due to Ron having to leave for the day, and by the time I was able to get back to the club on the 22nd, Ron had since been at the club a couple times and moved on to other jobs.

Whether it's loco shots, freight cars, or even over all scenic shots, it's a good way to get a better look at shots from the layout. When i was a kid about 10 i was so excited by trains! We had a freight and passanger line. Biggest thrill in the summer was to ralk my folks into going to watch them swirch cars! One time the ctew let me ride in the cab awhile! Wow...died and gone 2 heaven! .

A Novice, or a person who's been a model railroader for years, can learn a lot about local switching trains and the methods used in lining up and placing cars at designated industries. The scenery is always nice. Lots of green areas.

Another great switching video! Who ever weathered that old wood industry at 13:00 did a excellent job.If I may make a suggestion? Since you're making a very long reverse move that involves street crossings why not cut in another caboose at the end of the cut you are taking with you? This would give the brakeman protecting the shove a safe perch to protect the shove.. I learn that trick while braking on the PRR.

I gotcha. Yeah being 15 kinda makes railfanning a bit more difficult. I did see you had some model videos too. Can't speak for everyone, but for me, the model train videos almost always WAY out perform the railfanning vids. Might be something you could do more of in the absence of the railfanning vids. Especially if you're looking to grow your channel.

Only f one derails and causes the other to do the same. Otherwise, not really. It's not uncommon at all.

Golly how long is the first train? How much track does it actually have left to cover by the time we see the end?

That train is around 85 cars, and it still has a long way to go around the layout. The layout is U shaped with the outer dimensions 76'x62.' It's about 6.5 scale miles around the entire mainline, about 6 times longer than that train.

Well, it's not my layout, it's a club layout. It's a 76' x 62' U shaped layout with two large peninsulas in the middle of the U.
