I spent most of my life thinking my dad made up this song. He had so much fun singing it to us when we were little, and then later to the grandkids. Later when I found the song on KZbin, I became a huge Hoagy fan... especially the bit part in “to have or have not” singing “ Am I blue”

I'm related to Mr. Carmichael and I love all his songs. "Georgia" is the state song of Georgia, and Stardust is a classic that is extremely well known. I first heard of this song when my father sang it for me when I was really little. And when he got to the part about a man with a piece of chalk in his hand comin' around the other way, we both laughed so much!! He told me that Hoagie was careful to point out that the man in the song loved his girl and wasn't making fun of her. And then he explained that she must have been something special, because there were two men who liked hugging her so much. I loved my dad, and looking back on it now more than 50 years later, I love how he explained it to me. In an age of shaming and cruelty, it's nice to remember a time when it was okay to love someone not caring the different molds they came from. My Aunt knew Mr. Carmichael and played in a local band with him for a short while. She said he was funny, a gentleman, and a brilliant songwriter. If a video game features any of his works, I do hope they will not be using this one in a way that would inappropriate to the harmless fun intent of the song.

My Grandpa used to always sing this song! However, he got Alzheimer's disease (you cant remember anything) in 2001 and passed away last year. I have never been able to find this song because i never knew the name. (If you're wondering why my username is joebacon, I am using my little brother's account. My name is Maddy)

Hoagy's voice sounds like home and charm to me. Background to my Indiana growing up years.

My Step-dad had this record when I was a young child--My Mom passed away in 1959 and I never was able to hear this song again as my step-dad sort of disappeared after that---but, low and behold--here it is--I always thought it was a funny song--but, then remember I was about 7 when I first heard it--not too PC. Anyway, glad to find it---

My dad bought the record for my mom. She wasn't thrilled. She wasn't fat, but bigger. We heard the record my whole life. I've sung it to my kids and grandkids. Wouldn't go over in today's crazy world.

I have not heard this since my CD set "Doctor Demento's Mementos" vanished! Song had been mentioned between 'Momma Whippoorwill' and 'Walter' via CB radio years ago. It was not until I bought that CD set did I know what they were speaking about. A cute song that I enjoy hearing! Thanks for the upload.

The Hoagie Carmichael Collection at Indiana University has all of his recordings, for certain. He was a native of Bloomington, IN and a graduate of IU. My father was born down the road, I grew up in Southeast Indiana and well, I love Hoagy very very much.

I gotta gal who's mighty sweet With blue eyes and tiny feet Her name is Rosabelle Magee And she tips the scale at three o three Oh gee, but ain't it grand to have a girl so big and fat that when you go to hug her You don't know where you're at You have to take a piece of chalk in your hand And hug a way and chalk a mark to see where you began One day, I was a huggin' and a chalkin' And a chalkin' and a huggin' a way When I met another fella with some chalk in his hand A comin' around the other way over the mountain A comin' around the other way Nobody ever said I'm weak My bones don't ache, my joints don't creak But I, I grow pale and I get limp Every time I kiss my baby blimp Oh gee, but ain't it grand to have a girl so big and fat that when you hug her (You don't know where you're at) (You have to take a piece of chalk in your hand) (And hug a way and chalk a mark to see where you began) One day I was a huggin' and a chalkin' and a beggin' her to be my bride When I met another fella with some chalk in his hand A comin' around the other side of the mountain A comin' around the other side She's a mile wide (Chalkin' a mark down in Yellowstone park) When I met another fella with some chalk in his hand A comin' around the other side (over the mountain) Over the great divide

It's a game called Fallout 3, set post-apocalyptic world where only 40's culture survived. I believe this song actually plays on some of the radio stations in the game.

What a great song! I was listening to a classic radio station on iTunes and this came on. I loved it so much I Googled some of the words and found out what it was called and then found it here! The wonders of modern science.. :-) I love completely wrong, non politically-correct stuff like this.. I'm sure we are going backwards with all our stupid attempts to never call a spade a spade.. Damn! Can I say "spade" now? ;-)

My parents had this recording on the back side of a 78-rpm single of one of Hoagy's big hits -- maybe September Song? Anyhow, HC did not write it. Composer was Clancy Hayes, a San-Francisco vocalist/banjo-player.

What's the trick? You attract people to you channel with a peppy Hoagy Carmichael song so you can hit them with your grotesque apocalyptic images? Because....?

Because I made this a decade ago while playing the Fallout video game series. No trick, just enjoy the great Hoagy!
