I have every document I have ever gotten in paper, since 2001 with a few before. Multiple jobs, paper pay stubs, in one job I regularly rented a cargo van as a broker courier. I had an encyclopedia stack of van rental invoices, 3 papers each. I have every rent receipt I ever got, except maybe 10 mixed into this 100lbs of paper I am sorting through and shredding. Monthly bank and credit card invoices. I found and kept my first paystub from a job I started in 2001 and spent more time at than any other job. I had to shred a few printed pictures of girlfriends. I felt bad, but I have them digitally somewhere. I have so much paper from the last 23 years, when I grab a random stack to sort, it's like an archeological dig. It's like looking at layers of sediment to determine when the asteroid hit and when the volcano blew up. I grab a stack to shred and it's like I find all Dynamex paper, and not far away my employee tag, and I'm like uh..... here we go.... what a mess. Heartbroken. There's some hand written emo babble sad ah it a chick. Talking about stitches and working from 7:30 - 3:30. I know I have everything because I would not just discard this type of thing. I throw it into a garbage bag or a duffle bag, so I know I probably have every rental receipt except maybe 10 - 15 for one reason or another. It's astounding. I'm sorting and shredding. I'm tired of having it. Ugly waste of space. I love discarding worthless garbage that takes up space. Like the coat closet. Just throw everything in the garbage. Most of it IS garbage, it's like the paper. Worthless and needs to go. Decluttering.

I am such a hoarder! My problem is I have so many hobbies that everything I see (from paper bags, to broken jewelry to wrapping paper to ribbons and so on) is a potential piece of art or scrapbook project, etc. I’ve decided to try and limit myself to one box or one drawer for these items. It’s a daunting task to sort all of this stuff. To top it off, in the span of 3 years, I moved out of my old job, my brother died and we had to clear out my sister’s house (he was an extreme hoarder like the ones on the TV show! My hoarding looks more like what you showed in this video), my mom got sick and we had to move her out of her apartment and then my sister and my mom moved to a new house and my basement flooded! During all of this many items accumulated and were shifted all over the house. Now my whole house is a huge mess!! Not only did I accumulate items during these moves but I have not spent time working at my own house because I was spending so much time helping my sister and Mom. I try to tackle small piles at a time. Also I injured my knee and couldn’t do much during that time! Ughhhhh I need help lol. I hope your channel can help me! New subbie! TYFS ❤️🦋💜

My Ex Husband was a Neat Freak so he helped me keep it Under control mainly because I didn't want him to fuss. When I decluttered my attic, I finally realized what an unhealthy relationship I have with paper. There were financial statements from the '90s and all kinds of stupid stuff up there. To prevent that going forward, I've been retrieving the mail once a week and dealing with it all on that day. I no longer get a newspaper, so I don't have flyers or clippings. The less access I have to temptation, the better. It's difficult to break bad habits, but it can be done.

Have years of taxes properly filed receipts. I plan to go through them all and only keep the receipts that deal with my 12 year old car, etc.
@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden3 жыл бұрын
In case you didn't know, receipts can't be put in paper recycling, they need to go in the trash. The thermal paper is coated in BPA (which is how the 'ink' shows up) so it contaminates all the paper recycling. It's something we don't get told to avoid (I don't know why) but it can ruin a whole batch of recycling. It's frustrating as we end up with so many of them which just get thrown away. Some shops here ask if you want it before it's printed or offer email copies instead which is a good step forward. Just thought you might like to know (if you didn't already, of course) as I know you've been trying to be more environmentally conscious.

In Europe that are now phasing out this type of paper - they literally print „I can be put in the recycling“ on the back
@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden3 жыл бұрын
@@CoquetFleur that's great to hear, the UK is also included in the BPA ban but ive not seen anything about the alternatives being recyclable (it's not printed on receipts), I'll have to do some more research. I've not shopped anywhere but the supermarket for the last year so it's not something I've thought much about but we run a business (that's been closed since March 20) and end up with masses of receipts in our accounts so I'll be keeping an eye on it when we eventually get back to work!

Good job! Just a suggestion...DON'T use an incoming mail basket. It automatically becomes a dumping ground that will get filled up. Deal with your mail as soon as you bring it into the house...bills in bill box, trash/recycle, shred, time will tell. I have successfully kept my counter clear of mail clutter for a few years now.

At the beginning on 2020 I gathered ALL the paper clutter in our home it was massive. I had 5 full bankers boxes, 1 full laundry basket , 1 small wicker basket and 2 portable file folders. I was so good when I first started and got through the 5 bankers boxes but then hit a wall. I picked it back up this month. I went through the large laundry basket and now I am down to just the wicker basket and the 2 file folders. I have been watching video's on the Sunday Box and when I finish my initial sort I am going to come up with a simple filing system and start using a Sunday Box. I NEVER want to deal with large amounts of paper clutter ever again! :)

We throw away all sale ads and junk mail as we walk into the house. The bills get put in the 'to pay' location. Before we do anything else - still carrying my handbag, lol - junk into recycling and bills in their home. Anything unusual goes onto my end table to see what it is that night. I had to tell myself that I am not bringing anything new into the house, so it doesn't matter what is in the sale ad. If I need to buy something, I go online to my local stores and look up the prices. I swear this saves me money in the long run, because the volume of things I am buying has greatly reduced in the past few years. So it just doesn't matter if I could have saved $3, I probably would have bought something else by going into the store.

Paper clutter is a hot topic in our house! I used to hoard my papers and when I finally decided to combat this issue I had 30ish pounds of paperwork to shred. Knowing myself as I do I knew I wasn't going to take the time to shred it all so I took it all to Staples and they shredded it for me. Yes, it cost money but it was worth it. Since then I have invested in a privacy/security stamp so I can just recycle it. I open the bills as they come in daily, throw away the envelope and advertising, and right then and there I stamp my private information. This has been a game changer! I have been able to keep up with the bills and other paperwork for 3 years now.

Paper bills, check. Must keep every piece of paper bc (rarely), I go back & find something I need (although I could prob get it some other way?), check. Must touch and see every piece of paper before I can emotionally let it go without remorse, check. Often, right when I think this is it-I’m ready to start… I get sleepy & take a nap instead. How many hours did it take you? I never have the energy to finish in one day. Then I pile on more before I get back to it. Hoorah for you! 👏👏👏

@Slidapenguin3 жыл бұрын
You should hang that receipt binder by your front door! That way when you come in from shopping you can immediately put it in the binder and then if you need to return something you can pull the receipt before you leave the house. Then once the year is over you can recycle the contents! Also, you might want to think about setting up automatic payments online. All of my bills are automatic, I don’t need to think about them as on their designated days they come out of my account and I get an email about it! Hope this helps!

If you go through the basement paper hoard and find a lot that needs to be shredded, it might be helpful to take it to some place like Staples and pay them to shred it. They weigh it and you can put it into the lock box yourself for future shredding. This really helped my sister when she was faced with paper documents when she was moving, and me too. Then I use my little home shredder just to keep up with the weekly stuff, once the bulk of the mess was gone. Otherwise, it's just too overwhelming and time consuming (not to mention making the home shredder overheat!).

I don't know what it's like in the USA, but in Canada, if we put up a sign that says "no unaddressed mail wanted" (google image it for cute signs), they are not allowed to drop off the junk. It saves so much time and energy not having to sort through all the crap. Or maybe there is a no junk mail registry or something? Another trick is to treat the mail like it's own chore. If you're getting the mail, it is mail getting time (i.e., you sort/open it immediately) - it doesn't necessarily mean you will do the action items right then and there (e.g., paying a bill), but that you are simply going to deal with the physical papers right away. I have a recycling bin right beside the door where the mail comes in so I can put stuff directly into it straight from the box. Maybe this could be hubby's chore?
@soniarosa78843 жыл бұрын
I remembered something that maybe help you: paper that you think that can be useful later (i.e., wrapping paper), stablish an amount that you fell comfortable with (like size of a box). Other than that amount you will be able to get rid off with no anxiety associated. Small portions at a time 😉

Have you tried switching as many bills as possible over to direct deposit as this means the money is taken out of your account automatically and you do not have to think about it.
@ahoardersheart3 жыл бұрын
I did try that 2 years ago! But I had 2 different companies who had overdrawn my account and I got hit with overage fees 😵 That was when we were living paycheck to paycheck so it might be something to consider again! Thank you so so much my friend ❤️🙏🏻❤️
@SGast3 жыл бұрын
@@ahoardersheart In this case it is better to have control over when money is withdrawn. I have a cushion in my checking account which is about one paycheck as it means I never have to worry about overdraft fees, an unexpectedly high utility bill or having forgotten to transfer money from savings. This is especially important for me as my income can be quite irregular. Knowing there is always x amount of money in the account takes a way a lot of stress for me. However, in the beginning I had to be mindful about it having a purpose where it was and not spending it. Over time I just started building all these little safety nets for myself - the cushion, the sinking funds, the emergency fund, long-term savings and it really helps me feel secure that I have contingencies for the small and big things that might happen in my daily life. Having a cushion and setting up direct deposit might be something you can consider when you are out of babystep 3 but as long as your system works for you there really is no real reason to change it.

I still get paper bills (with the idea that my husband would see them if anything ever happened to me). But I pay them online out of my checking account. I set up a payment address for everybody that I pay, and then set up an automatic payment for the minimum each month, on the date that I choose. This way, I never miss the minimum payment. But when the paper bill comes, I change the amount to the full payment amount, and double-check the date. The advantage is that I can see all my payables listed by the time they are going to get paid, right there online in my checking account.
@Mystical2443 жыл бұрын
@@ahoardersheart I agree with you, I don't like automatic payments deducted from my bank account. But I do pay my bills on line and I do it once a month. Even if the bill isn't due for another 2 weeks I still pay all of them at the same time on the 3rd of every month. I printed out an excel sheet that has one column that I check mark once I pay the bill on line and another column that I check mark a few days later to make sure that it cleared in my bank. Once both columns are all checkmarked then I know I've paid every bill for the month and everything has cleared in my bank. I find this system better than automatic payments because what if you are short one month, automatic payment would not be good for that circumstance.

@@ahoardersheart i had seriuos trouble wth the cell phone So that and the credt card are NOT auto pay. The other monthly things are auto pay BUT i get a hardcopy of all billls. this online thing makes me nervous. Mid month is my credut cad and beginning of moth my bankstaement. so twice amonth i reconcile things and listexpenses on the spread sheet. not quite sure how i will manage this year. i always bring CC to 0 ad liked thebill asit showed what and where i spent. So amny business' hurtingbadly now. they would prefer cash-----CC ompanies charge them a fee so i am tying to do more cash . .i might have to learn from you about saving and tracking reciepts.

I too struggle with mail & papers on my kitchen table so I am going to do the same thing. Thank you for sharing that tip.

I love your bill organizer something I used to do was write the due date on the front of an envelope that it came and then I would take a pin and stick it in a cork board in the one spare room At whatever house we were in I got away from that after we had kids and only ended up having one income. Now I do paying bills usually twice a month. But having that visual system definitely worked very well for me. Currently I have that Dollar general "home finance bill organizer" I mentioned on another video. It works very well for me because it has where you can write down the due date and what not and check it off as you pay it. since I don't have a ton of bills I use the other side for confirmation numbers. And since it has a pocket I can just put the bills in whenever I get them from the mail so that I don't lose them in the meantime. Ideally. I want to be better about that this year. And hopefully stem the flow of paper coming in and then I'll be able to tackle the old stuff later.

If you're having a hard time with starting new habits from scratch, try connecting them to ones you already mastered. For example I'm not the best at remembering that I need to brush my teeth, so everytime I'm using the bathroom for something else I brush. Sometimes it can a bit much but it's better than forgetting until my mouth is super gross.

I love the progress! I think a goal you should set is no shopping (except for food) until each room in the house is done so you know what you have. In the long run it will save you from buying multiples and more things that you don’t necessarily need.

Great job! I wouldn’t worry about a basket for incoming mail. Now that you have places for different categories, just sort as soon as it enters the house!

I would say you wouldn't believe how much paper clutter I used to have, but actually you could probably relate lol. I would pull boxes and boxes out of my mom's basement or financial papers, academic papers, receipts, everything. I have paychecks from working at CVS in high school. One big issue was that both my parents kept tons of paperwork of mine from school and work :-| so I had to sort all of it. It was great to sit with a shredder and and paper bag and I actually bought myself a feed through style scanner for things I wanted to keep digitally. Through the process, the amount of work I was doing would often convince me that a document wasn't even worth scanning and giving a file name and someday finding again, and it would be shredded on the spot. Nowadays, iPhone has a pdf scanner in the notes app that uses your camera, if necessary, and I personally tend to take coupons and magnet them to the fridge so I don't forget I have them. I rejoice when the expiration date arrived and I can throw them out haha. Great job! Getting rid of paper clutter is awesome

Like the accordion method for reciepts. We also have a small office shredder for papers that need to be shredded.

Hello Ms Heart! I personally keep receipts in a reverse file system - the moment it gets in, I decide how long it should be kept and then put it in the folder for that time. For example I have a little folder thing for receipts that can be thrown out in january 2022 - And once the day comes it is suddenly so much faster to go through.. Coupons are not quite as big a thing in europe... so i sadly have nothing i could say to that, that noone else said already - and that would be keep a paper recycling bin around. Mine is actually next to the entrance and i just throw whatever i don't need in there at once.

Fly Lady Kat recommends 15 minutes daily (5-6 times a week) to declutter paper. I think this helps reduce decision fatigue and hoarder panic.

I think I will try this. My paper situation is huge. Making a huge pile just won't work for me. Thank-you for the tip! People on this site are so awesome to share what works for them.

I totally get the old school thing. I don't opt for auto payments, because it truly makes me feel like I have no control. Probably just my anxiety, but either way, paying bills by mail does work best for me.

Brilliant job. Make sure you keep on top of it every few days or every week so that it gets to be a habit and doesn’t build up to be so overwhelming again. You’re doing so well.

Great work! I like to get my bills in the mail also, but I then pay them online to save on mailing costs and then just file my bills away in there folders when paid. I also keep a plastic shoe box to store all my receipts in and clean them out every few months. I don't waist valuable drawer "real-estate" that way. :)

Don't feel too bad. I had to go through 4 years of paper once.... I shredded 5 giant paper bags worth of paperwork, receipts and mail. It took me more than 5 straight hours of sorting and shredding. Just do your best to keep on it!
