I just recently went through a filing cabinet and was able to shred almost the entire contents! Taxes from both of us before we were married (we got married in 2000), manuals to things we didn't have, records from vehicles long gone, bills from our first apartment...all tossy tossy! And I was able to sell the filing cabinet!

I watch all your vlogs to help me to help my partner, who is a big hoarder, thank you so much, you keep me sane. I would put her at stage 4, and when I first met her we slept on the lounge floor, and everything else (showers, food, laundry) was done next door at her Mums house, as we only had cold water here, the kitchen wasnt usable and barely accessible. Ive worked hard over the years with her and we now sleep in the bedroom, cook in the kitchen and can now use both bathrooms, we even have a guest room! It has extra stuff everywhere of course which Im encouraging her to declutter but its hard as shes not well (mentally and physically) so I have to bring boxes to her in bed and hold everything up for her to make a decision. Ive been doing this since 2004 with no help (Im 61 now!), its 3 steps forward, 2 back but I see your progress and see a brighter future, eventually. Im so proud of how far you've come, I see the change in you in every vlog xxx

I can relate to you man! My Mother in Law is between a stage 4-stage 5. It's been excruciatingly hard since i moved in 2 years ago. But I love the healing thats going on, even if its 4 steps forward 3 back, theres been atleast some progress. When i first moved in, only one bathroom was usable and even then it was riddled with a moldy ceiling. The kitchen you could "use" but you could hardly walk in it and move around. Everyone's bedroom only had a walkway to the bed, then the boys (my husband and my brother in law) had walkways to their desks. In the years I've been here, we've worked on every room except the dining room and my mother in laws bedroom. You can walk and USE the kitchen, but we still need more counter space cleared off. my room and my son's room you can sweep and mop the whole thing......so it's pretty clean haha. The bathroom has been professionally cleaned, and re-painted. We can also use the upstairs bathroom now, the shower in that bathroom just needs to be replaced and then we would have 2 full working bathrooms. I'm glad you commented, I thank you truly. You made me feel WAY less alone. Also thank you to the kind woman making these videos. I wish my mother in law could feel better in sharing her story but for now we clean until she can feel proud of where we are getting.

It's rough to have an unhealthy relationship to paper. It took me months to get through all the boxes I had crammed in my attic at the start of my de-hoarding process. It made me more mindful not to accumulate it going forward, which I haven't been. Keep up the good work!

Great video! I’m glad to see you shopping from your basement. Have the shredder close to you when you’re de cluttering. And keep that shredder close to your cabinet. Beautiful top drawer. Invest into a waterproof/fireproof safe for papers that you want store longer. I started using binders with clear pockets instead of filling it works better for me because if I’m working on one subject I just pull the binder.

I have most of my "papers" at my Friend Wendy's house, in her basement. My filing systems and my Shredder, ect.....I plan on dealing with the papers when I visit with her, I sometimes do my laundry at her place. And she is similar to me in that she has a "messy house", but she is not a "hoarder Collector".....she is just messy. Lol....I have been trying to help her get her place in order, because she felt "overwhelmed" and stopped trying to fix the mess.[ I helped one of my younger Sisters get her place back in order when she moved back into her place. (She was letting someone live there when she tried working things out with her ex husband. And unfortunately it didn't work out. They both moved on. But, her place was a mess.....I motivated her and helped her clean it up, and she has since painted and decorated it even more, new floors and counters and remodeling projects in her bathrooms, ect. She (just like me) needed motivated.) 😏] I Seperated my "paper" mess from my "Craft" mess.....and my other messy clutter. (My niece Danielle said...."you have stuff at someone else's home!?" I explained to her that.....it was so I could Hyper Focus on just The Papers without other Distractions. Shred, file and Organize them. While listening to Music. Music calms the savage beast. 😊 it calms and relaxs me.

I have a note book that I write in the bills for each month and the date due. When get the money, I pay the bill and I highlight it. That way, I know that it's been paid. I keep the monthly bills clipped together until paid. I need the paper bill as a reminder. I've been doing this for years and it works for me. I need to go through the file cabinets and get rid of old warranties, old tax information, and what ever else that is in there that needs to go! Both of my shredders broke so I need to invest in a sturdier one or wait until my bank has a shred day. They do it a couple of times a year.

When they are paid then check mark on calendar then file marked paid, method, amount.

Have you ever seen a Banana Box from a grocery store? I had 12 of those filled with papers and junk. I'm not the hoarder, but my late husband was. He was also, ADHD and Bi-Polar. It would take a book to tell you everything now, but I do have a story I will tell one day. And I plan to. Now, back to the banana boxes. It took me 6 months to go through them. Every night after working all day, I sat for hours sorting through every piece of paper. Never letting my husband see what I was throwing away. One day I was helping him clean out the garage and threw out some of his stuff away. When I wasn't home, he went through the garbage can on the street and dumped everything on the front lawn. Plus he locked me out of the bedroom.

Hello Melanie, I found you thorough your talk with Dawn, the Mimiumlist Mom. I have been sliding from Cluttered Pack Rat into probably level 1 hoarder. Feeling Overwhelmed with the Mess and don't deal with it......due to my Stress levels and my ADHD brain in conjunction with my OCD brain. Lol....and lack of proper nutrition and sleep. Plus, no real support system. (Recently one of my Nieces looked at pictures of my townhouse, and the conversation was a bit comical. She has kind of offered to help me get rid of stuff. I may take her up on that now. I am 55 years old, a Crafty type of person, I am in Food Service at a Hospital, doing the work of Two people and about 100 pounds overweight. With Arthritis and back/hip/feet/ knees, ect....pain. (partly probably due to my poor nutrition and lack of Sleep.) Your body needs sleep to repair things. And if I could just Stop Emotional Eating and kill the "Carb Sugar Junk fast food junkie Addict" Inside me....that might clear my head, and help me deal with the mess. I have been watching several people on KZbin, like Doctors and Nutritionalists and people who have successfully lost weight and have become better mentally and physically and emotionally during the process. The last two or more years have been extremely difficult, for everyone really, and I definitely have a harder time Mentally during the Winter months......with Spring I usually feel Happier and more alert and motivated, The term Spring Cleaning comes to mind when Spring is here. Lol.....I have the desire to finally get my place and life Downsized and Organized. (My family has talked about calling the Mission Organization Show, years ago, and having them come help me get rid of stuff and get Organized.) Two of My Nieces talked about coming over to my place, when I was at work, to get rid of my excess stuff.....using my spare key that their Mother (my younger Sister) has, I told them that I was going to call their Mother and tell her to hide the key from them! Lol....but, I might let them come help me get rid of some stuff that I really don't need, or use. I'm going to start watching your videos and keep on watching all the other videos on "Nutrition and Decluttering". I enjoy reading people's comments too, many are encouraging with positive comments about their own experiences, especially the weight loss and positive health results. I know part of the reasons for my "issues" ....nutrition and "Pack Rat/beginning hoarding tendencies"..... as I have already seen Therapists in the past, 3 of them, in the last 20 plus years. But, my "Mental health and childhood issues" were the reasons. This Enlightenment of my other issues have just recently started to come to my attention. Prayers for things to change in my life would be greatly appreciated. Ps....changing my nutrition and sleep is part 1. Dealing with the Stress at Work and Home (the Finances and Cluttered Mess) is part 2 and 3. They work together......having proper sleep, and proper nutrition and less Stress. This would probably help me to make the changes that can improve my mental health and physical health. Angela is my name and 1fatfroglady@gmail.com is a way to help incourage me.
