I used to also have what one might call a “hoarder” bedroom with massive clothes not only in my closet but in the guest bedroom. When I was working, I had (not kidding) 20-30 sweaters, coats and jackets, 20+- dress shoes and at least 50+ pairs of tennis shoes, sandals and flip flops, 100+ pants and jeans, not to mention numerous dress shirts and countless tee shirts and shorts. My swimsuits fortunately was only four. My closet being jammed with clothes causes me to use the floor because lack of room. I had to take out a handful of clothes just to get out an outfit. Did I mention I could’ve opened a Jean store? To make this short, I decided it was time to downsize my 2 closets which I still use but more organized. In my primary closet I donated 10+ bags of clothes, shoes and miscellaneous items. My secondary closet now has 3 vests, 2 sweaters, 2 jackets and 1 coat. I would say it took me almost a week to get things organized and donate.

Only 3 min in to this video and I had to pause so I could tell you that you’re such an angel friend❤. As someone who has struggled with depression a good chunk of my life, I’ve had my fair share of messy house periods. Eventually I always was able to pull up my boot straps and focus on cleaning/organizing the house from top to bottom (usually during a vacation from work) to get things back on track. A hand full of years or more ago, something really broke in side of me and it’s like I couldn’t really get past basic activities of going to work, taking care of the kids, and doing whatever was most necessary in between to make sure those 2 things happened. Then in early 2020, my Mom found out she had cancer and I focused on her. She was healthy and treatment was a good option, and then her body seemed to turn its back on her. At the end of June we found out she was not going to live, and I focused on supporting and taking care of her. My Mom passed away less than 3 weeks later. After she was gone, I stopped functioning altogether and my home completely fell apart. The only reason I got out of bed at all was my daughters and my grandparents, because they needed me to be able to do that. I couldn’t cook or clean, I couldn’t take care of myself, and I couldn’t work. So my home went from messy to a complete disaster, and I barely even saw it because I couldn’t see most things past the overwhelming grief, and then I started battling with anxiety and PTSD. I couldn’t see the garbage, the dishes, or the clutter. And I definitely couldn’t stop myself from adding to the clutter. It’s been over 2 years now since we lost her, and after some therapy, 15 months off from work, a major job change, medication, then medication changes, admitting to myself that I have ADHD because it blew up after my life blew up, a few amazing friends who have managed to stand by me no matter what, and the desire to do right by my Mom, my daughters and my grandparents, I have finally managed to get to a place where I can help myself some. Sometimes I still struggle with getting out of bed, but more and more I’m able to push myself hard enough that I can make small dents in my home. I have a long way to go, and maybe someday I’ll be able to allow the people who love me the most to come and help me. I guess my point is, that whether you’re at your lowest, or even just halfway there, having amazing people like you as a friend, people with empathy, and who are able to see past the mess, who want to offer their time and help someone who’s struggling to help themselves get their lives back….. It’s one of the greatest gifts anyone can ever truly have in their life❤️. Thank you for being one of those people🙏🏼

Hi Sonia, I am so sorry you had to go through all of that, and thank you so much for sharing your story. In reality she needs to declutter 50-80% of the clothes, even if she really loves clothes, because it will make upkeep and laundry and organization a breeze for her, and even if she lets it go again it will be so simple to clean it all up. If she loves shopping then keeping an item limit per category can help 1 in- 1 out.

I always thought this would be the ultimate solution but when I lived with limited access to laundry facilities having only the essentials wasn't enough to get me through 2 weeks between visits to the laundry mat. Had to travel to laundry mat and it cost about 10 dollars to wash one large load and another 7 to dry. Just saying sometimes having an abundance of clothes is due to lacking something else not necessarily a love of shopping

Super late with this comment, but might be helpful for anyone who struggles with clothing hoarding and organization. I bought wooden hangers for my clothes. I have enough to fill my closet with clothes. I hang all clothing except underwear, bras, workout clothes and sweaters. It’s hang everything else, t-shirts, leggings all of it. When I run out of hangers it means something has to go. It keeps my closet organized and cleaned out. Here and there I might start having a few items with no hanger, but I don’t let it go on for long. It’s been a great system for me.

Friend is trying to manage way too many clothes. She should pick out her favorite 2 weeks worth for each season and let the rest go. First I want give this lady in the video a shout out in doing a wonderful job cleaning and organizing your friends place. She is blessed to have you there for her. Please forgive me for throwing my 2 cents worth. However through my own journey and learning how others are doing the same as well. I came up with a few suggestions as a general guidance in being more organized. So here it is: and it might work, depending on the indivduals lifestyle. Have: 1 or 2 pairs of dress pants. 1 or 2 skirts. Have tops to go with those items. Then 1 pair of nice jeans, can use the tops that go with the dress pants and skirts. 1 simple plain colored nice dress if needed. Keep the pants and skirt plain neutral color. The next thing is lesisure wear: leggings, sweat pants or joggers. Have several plain t -shirts and hoodie or sweat shirts. If you dress up more, aim to have clothes that mix in match for those outfits. If it is more casual aim in that direction. Bottom line is have more tops than bottoms. Just planing on how you want to incorporate your wardrobe, can make life easier. Remember: More clothes... more laundry and then it becomes OVERWHELMING, STRESSFUL AND COSTLY.

Thank you for doing this. I am overwhelmed watching this. I think this is an example of LESS is MORE... The fewer clothes she has the less she will have to put away. I would recommend she divide her wardrobe and put 3/4 of it up in storage containers so she only sees the clothes for that week and that season. then rotate every other week or so. It feels like you are getting a new wardrobe every other week!!! Who wants to do laundry twice by washing clean clothes that just ended up on the floor!!! That might be motivation right there!!! When the week is up... time to do laundry and the empty space will motivate her. This is too much inventory!!!! Thanks for being a good friend. NO judgment. No guilt,

To answer your question, people usually let their bedrooms, living rooms, etc. get like that when they're too mentally tired and/or overwhelmed to do anything about it. That spare room is wonderful. If she can fit some clothing under the bed that room would be a great sitting tv room or workout room. So much potential! You are a great friend. You inspired me to fold my clothes!!!!

That is such a great idea! One of the walls is shared with the kitchen so when she does decide to sell she could close off the door and add it to the shared wall with the kitchen and make it a 2 bedroom

Ok, sorry in advance if this turns out to be a book lol. But I just have to thank you. I watch TONS of cleaning videos. I enjoy them, and I long for a clean environment myself. I have help in my house but not in my room. I have ADHD, MDD and some debilitating physical health issues. It was difficult to find a place to put my foot on the floor in my room and I tried literally for months to clean it. I couldn't even get started. Then one day I realized I needed help so I started typing search terms into KZbin like "where to start in a messy room". I was just so paralyzed when I would look at my room and I literally couldn't move, just didn't know WHAT to do. After many duds, I found your video, and it was your seemingly simple little tip about collecting laundry and trash at the same time that made a bell go off in my head. When you said that afterward the floor is pretty much clear it gave me such a major progress to look forward to while telling me EXACTLY what to do. That was 3 weeks ago. It took me about 5 days with my health and having to rest a lot, but my room is beautiful. And one-at-a-time I'm organizing other things in there. First my entire nightstand inside and out. Then my entertainment armoire. Next up, the closet. And I'm actually keeping it clean. It's like a miracle. Thank you so much for this video. I just subscribed and look forward to more of your content. Thank you again ❤.

Hey Shelly, thank you so much for sharing. I am so glad you found my video to be helpful and that’s exactly why I made it. There are so many people who experience the same thing and although I cannot personally relate I have compassion and empathy. Honestly taking small steps each day pays off and before you know it you are back on track. You should be so proud of yourself and all that you have accomplished! 💗

I suffer from depression and I know how easy getting into a mess can soon overwhelm you that you can't seem to function. Your friends problem seems to be that she has far too much 'stuff' that has gone beyond the houses capacity to hold it all. If she could only part with about 70% of what is no longer useful and send it to charity then she would free up enough space to deal with what she really needs. Is she frightened of not having enough, maybe was not very well off as a child? That is what usually starts people hoarding. Maybe you can help her with her thinking a she is hurting herself and making things difficult for her family but you really are a good friend to help her tidy her home. Having someone with you to help you get started is a wonderful start, it is what keeps me on top of things as I have the help of my daughter. Brilliant, you have made her life easier, I hope you can continue to help her until she can get to grips with it herself. Good luck.
