We took a road trip to Hobbiton. It has been on top of our list of places to visit here in New Zealand. It is quite popular not just for the Lord of the Rings fanatics but also for people who just want to experience something different even without seeing the movies.
Hobbiton is located at the Alexander family sheep farm in Matamata. We parked our car at The Shire’s Rest where we took a bus ride to the movie set. It is a 2-hour guided tour wherein our guide shared some insights as we explore this enchanting location. Most of these Hobbit holes are just facades and you only get to enter one of them. The scenes in the movies showing the insides of Hobbit Holes were filmed at a studio in Wellington. The tour finishes with a pint of beer (or in our case, a non-alcoholic ginger beer) at The Green Dragon Inn.
The weather was gloomy when we visited but it was a magical experience nonetheless.
