Hi Vince, great video. I’ve used forks in the same way, now I make mine with UHU glue on greaseproof paper, off old plastic rods or micro wood slivers or direct to the model and let it hang. I still use forks occasionally, but find the UHU gives more dynamic ice crystals. Pouring the glue into an foil container and mix a little ink. I tend to add a little turquoise paint and gently stir it with a cocktail stick making sure not to blend it in. It looks like blue raspberry ripple. Once done, I drag a cocktail stick through it and clamp it over some paper to catch any drips. Once dry I do the same as you, and give it a gentle drybrush of white paint. If you inspect icicles, sometimes they pick up grime from the object they’re hanging off, so, if indicated, I add a minute amount of AK grime before stirring it. I used to directly put it onto the greaseproof paper, as you know, the problem with that is it flattens. Have to say, your videos are great. I’ve been modeling for >8 years and am now considering to video my work to help others, like you you do. Graham

That's very interesting I have used UHU quite a bit for goo, blood and spit, never tried it for ice. i will have to give that technique a try. Thank you for sharing, it's always my favorite part of doing these videos is what people share and I learn in return.

That looks so awesome I want one for real in my backyard. Sans the skulls of course............well.............maybe, lol.

Personally I found dipping the plastic tongs into acetone for a few seconds gives a great cloudy look and surface for glazes or paint to adhere too, otherwise it just doesn't stick.
@VinceVenturella5 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. In general, I find if you apply a little varnish to them, that also helps the paint stick.

I get my husband to save his forks from McDonalds just for this :) I like the fork icicles, but using different techniques, like those mentioned below in the comments, and mixing them together can give a really nice range and organic feel to the object. For larger icicles and ice lumps I often bulk out a fork tine with nail acrylic.
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Good thought on the build up. Excellent advice for sure. :)

I'd would have left the tines on the fork, take a hair dryer at a low seting and bend the tines. after being done with painting, cut them off the fork. this way you make good use of the forkhandle, as it's easier to hold. anyway: I reckon, the same techniques can be applied to creating stalagmites/-tites. what kind of colors would you recommend for that endeavour?
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's the one thing I kicked myself for not including You can heat or use a candle and pull it apart to get a thin sharp tine. As to stalagmites, I would generally place them and then paint over them completely (as opposed to this where I want them to be clear), and then mix in some greys, purples and greens.

Amazing approach! I can't wait to try it. I didn't know about "accelerant". Does that make the super glue dry faster? What kind do you use?
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
Yep, zap a gap accelerator.

Hi Vince! Have you tried vallejo's water effects? It's relatively easy to shape into icicles, haven't tried anything massive but for small icicles it did the job perfect.
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Yep, I like that as well, it tends to shrink some, but for small ice it's a great tool. You can also shape it over this technique to get more bumpy icicles and extend and sharpen them.

(since you come up with various ideas what to do with it): Hobby Cheating suggestion: "5 things you can do with Gloss Varnish other than varnishing" (oil wash undercoat, making white paint smooth, adding ice irregular patterns, fixing gaps etc.)

Yep, I have a "all the other uses of Varnish video" planned. Always too many videos and too little time. :)

Hi vince, great video. what kind of superglue and accelerant are you using? Im trying to find them on amazon but there are many options. Thanks

Zap a Gap CA Standard Superglue and Accelerator.

Great tutorial as always. It slightly bothers me when they aren't perfectly straight down, being a product of gravity, being of a bit instantly looks of under closer inspection.

Yep, it bothers me too, but it was really hard to balance with the camera. :) - Hope it was helpful none the less.

Is there a specific reason you don't use a wet palette? I ask as a new painter, because everywhere else I go, everyone is always talking about them and how they are the most important thing to have!
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
I normally use a wet palette for all my normal painting. This is an exception as when I need to do something quick or don't want the paint to be too wet, I use the dry palette. I use it for metal paints, quick ink applications, and dry brushing mainly.

Can I apply some heat to the plastic to model them and make more straight and "pointy" icicles? ( the fork points are slightly curved)
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's the one thing i kicked myself for not including. you can heat and stretch them for really thin sharp ice.

Have yo tried to make Icicles out of hot glue? Yours look great.
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
I have never tried hot glue, seems like you could lay it on foil, put a toothpick in it and stretch it out and let it dry.

Evil superglue?! Where can one buy such a thing? Something else to look for is the icicle set from geekgaming.co.uk... a word on that is that I've been watching it for some time and I don't know when itll be back in stock
