Vince...An oldie but a goodie! Very cool effect on the gun barrels. :)

Thank you, yes, I still use this effect to this day with relatively little change.

Hey I'm looking to do this effect on my Fire Dragon Fusion guns. Would I need the carbonization Color on a meltagun? I don't think carbon would collect on the end since it just fires a Lance of heat.

I am not sure any of our sci-fi guns would work with the same effects as these. :) - I say rule of cool, if you like it, go for it.

I know this is a long shot but, does this technique transfer onto non metallic metals? I have yet to find an example of it on nmm.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
Yep, same exact color pattern on NMM, it’s more complicated to execute, but totally doable.

Sorry about that, at this time I wasn't showing the palette yet. I do that in all the videos now. :)

Question: some of my flamer guns have like a copper or bronze grill of cover over the front of the barrels. Would the different metal shift color too? Or just the silver metal of the barrels? Looking to do this effect on my rhino tank flamers aswell as some tactical marines flamers..
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So with copper, they can still have the blue and purple and that is very realistic, it just won't really show the brown in the same way.
@CoryMaffucci

The brown I think was my primary concern. Thanks Vince!

one question, can this be achieved using vallejo paints? should I thin them down until a wash-ish consistency (to make it easier to blend with other colours) ?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, inks would be better, they are more transparent and will dull out the metal less, but you could use paints in the same way I use inks here.
@darwinci

@@VinceVenturella thank you!! what kind of inks are they? normal pen inks or?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 жыл бұрын
No, they are different, they are inks for miniature painting or art, here is a good example of what you would want - www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Game-Ink-Paint-Color/dp/B0016CN5MQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Vallejo+game+inks&qid=1558755338&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Great video. Really nice effect. One question - I'm trying to do this on a Gold weapon. Would you use a different combination of inks? Perhaps, Brown, Red, Purple, Black? Plasma Fluid turned out Green over the Gold, so I'm not sure how that will look. Thanks for any suggestions.

So we tend to think of metal colors as being that color, but of course, they are not really. What I mean is that, if you think of TMM in NMM terms, Gold is Yellow/Ochre and Steel is Grey/White. This is going to cause some challenges as the steel/silver being white will allow the colors to be true over the top, where as gold is going to change the color of a thin ink/ghost tint. We also have an additional challenge that gold doesn't do what you are talking about in reality. Gold, Bronze, Copper etc. are all rather soft metals, if heated even slightly, they simply melt, they don't score and burn and carbonize like steel. So when we try to create something that doesn't actually match up to reality, people's brains catch that subconsciously. Now, if we still wanted to do it, we could, the answer I would give is this - turn the end of the barrel you are to effect with everything except the chesnut/brown silver. So I would do something like this. 1) Paint gold 2) Do the brown step I outline 3) Glaze on silver over most of the brown, leave a bit of the brown there. 4) glaze a small thin amount of brown over the current brown/silver border 5) Continue on with all colors from there. I think that would give you the best possible result.

Thanks Vince. A lot of good points there. I'll give that a try. Could be relevant to Stormcast armour as that wouldn't melt as readily as real gold since it's an imaginary metal. All the best Nico

A little science. The color transitions found in hot steel is called 'tempering'. The specific colors indicate s temperature range, of which I am unable to recall currently. But, steel that is raised to a certain temperature and then left to cool slowly will have a certain harness to it as the crystalline structure of the metal reforms. When working metal for a specific hardness, it is sometimes called 'chasing colors'. The colors do actually go from this golden yellow, called 'straw' up to white before everything turns into a puddle.

slumming request - what GW paints would you recommend for this?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 жыл бұрын
So it's probably not going to work as well, but general thoughts. Gloss Agrax or regular Seraphim Sepia, Druchii Violet, thin silver glaze, guillman blue glaze, then the pigment is the toughest. We would want either some nuln oil or some VERY light Typhus Corrosion mixed with black paint (very light touch).

I noticed agrax is too dark, Seraphim sepia is much better, straw yellow color.

@VinceVenturella

I would say overall, they are okay for a few uses (this may be one for the agrax or Fleshsade), but overall, I don't find them very useful.

This simulates oxide colors on heated metal. If you google that you should find some nice real life images of the phenomenon to mimic.
