@BetterMonsters4 ай бұрын
@@planetsmashergames The algorithm also fed me this; I click on perhaps one recommended video a month, so I think that's a testament to what a good job you did with this video. The title and thumbnail ooze honesty and enthusiasm, and I'm amazed at how little the video felt like "here's why you should buy my thing" and how much it felt like "holy shit, this thing is so cool and I'm excited to have it and want to share that feeling with you". That's a really tough tone to navigate and you nailed it.

Thanks so much! I dig the finished vibe of it so much. When you are writing a manuscript, you have images in your mind of what the layout might end up looking like, and it’s so fun to see the plain text I wrote spring to life in ways that I didn’t expect or imagine.

Hey I really like Hobgoblin - I think the rules are excellent and are so far very underrated by the broader community. They're very very clever My question is: Have you ever considered doing something 'Similar' for 'Space Fantasy' (Ie 40k?) What I mean by this is simplifying the rule system a bit but also bringing in a lot of more modern concepts in design. Just interested. It's something I try and houserule sometimes but I don't have your background in design! Ty
@planetsmashergames4 ай бұрын
Hey Ollie! It’s a fine and excellent question. I have ideas, but nothing fully formed yet. For a sci-fi thing, a la 40k, I wouldn’t start from Hobgoblin as a base, as the game would need to feel so different. In particular, the key challenge would be how to make lots of shooting unit interesting, as that’s not trivial!
@misomiso82284 ай бұрын
@@planetsmashergames Oh interesting. I think one of most interesting things about Hobgoblin is that Magic and 'Strategy' use the same 'action resourse' which allows armies to be either lead be Sorcerer Lords or mighty leaders, but still compete. It's a very neat way to solve the problem of how to include magic or psychic powers without them dominating the game. That would be fun to see in a 40k related thing. Yes shooting is hard! In some ways you need to have an idea of the game size and format of armies you are aiming for (2000 points, 30-40 models of Marines?), and then work back from there! Love the content. Best wishes from a fellow Brit!
@planetsmashergames4 ай бұрын
Oh, thanks. Yeah, that’s a great observation. My happy place happens to be around 1000 points, sort of 4-7 units/vehicles, so I can imagine optimising for that sort of scale. I think having a chaotic and unpredictable battlefield is also an interesting space, a bit like I did in A Billion Suns, (or a 40k game with lots of deep strike) with strategic placement being important and not just two battlelines.

Is this based on the novel Hobgoblin?
@planetsmashergames3 ай бұрын
It is not, no. I have not read that. It’s called Hobgoblin because that’s both my favourite beer and my favourite unit from when I first got into Warhammer in the early 90s. I also really like the sound of the word, it’s fun to say. :)
@michaels89403 ай бұрын
@@planetsmashergames oh well, it's a very interesting novel in which a boy hooked on a rpg by the same name has to do real world combat with a fey. What's even more interesting is the description of how the rpg is played in contrast to how rgs were played when that novel was published...almost prophetic.

I honestly don't like the destruction nor how long that intro is. Gives me flashbacks of how my cousins and other kids played with their toys and broke them all. smashing them together and throwing them... Meanwhile at home we treated our toys like precious treasures to play out our stories with. I still have a box of toys in my parents house with action figures from when I was 7 years old. So, I'm sorry but I tend to skip the intro every time.
