20:10 It is incredible how fast the boat sails without a sail! and that is the reason why you should never let go of the boat when you are in the water. You can not swim as fast as the boat does.

Dropped the mast in the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina in the 70's. My brother and I were on our 14, both sitting between the windward shroud when I heard a quiet ping. The shroud broke right about eye level in the moderate wind. What an distressing sight to watch your mast and sail fall into the ocean. After securing the mast we were able to hold up the boom with the sail attached and in combination with paddling limp our way to shore with a favorable cross wind. Glad you had someone to tow you in!

Hi Joe, it would be good to show what part failed. I have had the shroud adjuster fail at the weld and my mast came down on my Hobie 16. The rust had eaten the metal away under the chrome so it was difficult to see that the part was structurally compromised. Fortunately, no injuries with the mast coming down and I made a nice friend with a local motor boater who towed me back to the beach. I installed all new shroud and forestay adjusters after that. Now, if there is any rust showing on the chrome near the weld, I replace the part. I have learned the hard way that trying to get one more season out of a part may not be a wise strategy and that good maintenance protocols are inexpensive insurance.

Hi James, it was the forestay that broke on this occasion - just next to the ferrule which seems to be the most common place for rigging to break.

Noted the windward shroud flexing the tramp side beam up & down when you are pushing hard. Guess it's the nature of the platform. Was quite concerned when I saw the tow line tied off to the dolphin striker post. That post cannot take much loading other than vertically. Its just a bit of alloy tubing and can easily bend or break from the towing forces. Much better to wrap around the beam at mast base.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 жыл бұрын
The rope tied around the dolphin striker is the capsize righting line (which is why it was there) It never occurred to me about it not being happy to be used as a towing point. I will make it new policy to take a turn around the beam before going forwards. Thanks for pointing this out.

I just came back and watched this again. (I'm using a Hobie Cat mast and sails on my trimaran.) Was it the port forestay that went? Was it a parts failure or a slip of the rigging? I generally don't have a safety boat nearby. If the mast wasn't rotating properly, I'd have to pump the brakes to see why before I kept heading out.

@@JoyriderTV Thanks for that. Steel cable can look fine on the outside and be shot on the inside. I switched to synthetic rigging for that very reason. My 19 ft marine plywood trimaran doesn't look nearly as exciting as a Hobie when she's approaching 20 knots and planing, but I can make a sandwich from the seat in the center using the foot rudder controls.

All that you can do is pack the mast and sail as well as possible and start paddling. If there is a strong wind you have a perhaps 20 degree angle of where you will end up downwind. Take a phone in a dry bag so that you can call for help if it happens. Replace your rigging every 3 years.

@bobgoforth7030 5 жыл бұрын
Self rescue is possible on a 14 but not easy. On time I had a shroud that I knew was questionable so I took an older spare shroud that I had with me on the boat. Sure enough the shroud in quetion broke and the mast came down. I took the sail off the mast, cleaned up the boat, replaced the shroud, restepped the mast on the water and sailed home with no assistance. I was able to do this because we used to run really lose rigs on the 14s back in the day so you could step and unstep the mast with the standing rigging connected. I had about 12 knots of breeze and 1 to 2 foot chop.

It's unlikely but I just wanted to check. When anything like that happens - mast down, capsize, anything else unexpected where you end up somewhere out of the ordinary, It's very good practice to check that everyone is OK immediately. On this occasion although I was solo I did it almost as a reflex but also to highlight that point.
