Again the best of the best for Hobie owners is given here by Joseph Bennett. He shows in an unique way how to find your best way for tuning, this boat is a so incredible and complex machine. Thanks to this video this important setting becomes easy !!

That first hole is great for sailing up wind I remember being at a long distance regatta in Texas 94 miles I think and everybody had their Mast way too far forward except for us and we were smoking up wind. We're talking 1981 with Chalice Stout a brilliant Hobie racer back in the day

Yes, I dare say that you guys were some of the first to unlock the potential of more mast rake.

I am a bit sad that I did not know this 25 years ago even though I worked with Detlef Mohr. He could not explain this concept of trimming as easily as you. It was always harder to understand with him and we are both germans. Although my English is not the best, your explanations are so good that I can easily understand them. Unfortunately, I sold my last Hobie 16 three years ago. Let's see, when my two children are ready, then I will maybe buy them a new boat and then on your tutorial, which is up to then of course in printed form in English, French, Spanish and German present (hopefully), inserts. Thank you for your videos.

Sounds like a plan! Derlef Mohr was out here in 2001 when we hosted the europeans (which he won, of course)

I´ve work for him from 1995-1998. I've learned a lot from him, but not enough to really be at the front of regattas.

here is a little film about a small regatt at our lake. I am the one with the red mainsail and the light gray gennaker on the old HC17 ;-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/paice6Ksj85sebs

for some reason I couldn't reply to the comment you left on another video - let me know if there is anything specific that you need to know if you can't find it on the channel.

Hi Joe, You had helped me before on some questions with my 23' trimaran project. As a general guideline, what is the ratio of inner versus outer diamond wire tension. I am using a tall rigg mast from a supercat 20 (I cut it to 10m length), it uses a spreader and two diamonds. I have a Loos gauge and wonder what the typical ratio of inner to outer diamond wire tension is? the mast is designed with no prebend. Any comments would be appreciated. on another topic: how is the weather on your island in December? Google says the average high temp is 9C is it still a good time to visit? Greetings Sam
@JoyriderTV8 ай бұрын
Hi Sam, Start with diamond wire tension around 34 on the loos gauge - i'm not sure about the second set - if it's regular shrouds they want to be around 25. December here not so good for sailing but still a nice place to be - although everything is closed.

@@JoyriderTV Hi Joe, thanks for your swift reply. I will fiddle around with the wires and Loos gauge and try to balance it out. what would be the best month to come to Greece?

Any hints for quick adjust of shrouds while in the water ? (in between regatas) other boats do that easily, not sure it's feasible on a HC16 ...
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
The most difficult bit would be not dropping the pin in the water! It will be quite easy to take the leeward shroud off and change it. If it's too tight just loosen the jib halyard a little. I'll talk about this on today's Q+A

Hey Joe! Can we get a rudder tuning video? Aka rudder rake and toe in?

Does it make a difference if you have a 7 hole plate (older boats) vs a 10 hole plate? Thank you
@JoyriderTV8 ай бұрын
No, it should be the same - i'm pretty sure that the hole spacing is the same.

Great video. Would you be able to do a video of sailing with spinnakers on f18 catamarans. Cheers
@tomdixonfilm6 жыл бұрын
It would also be really helpful if you did a video on mast rotation or include it in the video on spinnaker

I'll add it to the list! Should be in the next week or 2

Hey Joseph, do you sail Hobie 14 also block to block?
@JoyriderTV6 жыл бұрын
I don't sail H14 so much but when I do I generally set the boat up to go block to block.
@robertevans61874 жыл бұрын
How free should the mast pivot? And how tight should the rigging be? At times we are sailing with 200+ kilos. That would mean that I would want the sail forward correct. Your videos are great. We have been sailing for about 2 months and have learned a ton. It is a 1979 16ft hobie cat
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
If the mast seems to be grinding when it turns then you need a new bearing in there. In light winds the rig should be pretty much as tight as possible - as long as the mast can still rotate freely. As the wind picks up, if you feel that you're loosing grip with the rudders you should loosen the jib halyard just by a few cm at a time.

My mast turns 90 degrees. 45 degrees would be ideal?
@JoyriderTV5 жыл бұрын
Yes, 90 degrees is too far - i would assume that the stops on the mast base have worn away. Best solution is a new mast base and/or mast step.
@Cycling-Addiction6 жыл бұрын
Hey Joseph!nice video! what do you recommend regarding mast setup for crews of 160kg? (70+90) I'm using forth hole but the cannot go block to block! I have arround 10cm distance... thank you!!
@JoyriderTV6 жыл бұрын
i would say that perhaps you need to use the measurements as described as maybe your rigging lengths are different, if that's the same then maybe your mainsail is quite old and isn't the same cut. that might mean that you need to rake your rig back one hole.
@niekhaan79714 жыл бұрын
Hey joe, I fitted The stays in the fourth hole but i can not sheet in block to block even without rig tension or with traveller out. Can you help me out?
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
If you can't get it block to block it will be the length of the forestay rather than the shrouds. If you are stumped you can email me pictures.

Is this the same for a 14?
@JoyriderTV6 жыл бұрын
same principals but the numbers will be different. I'll have a look around and see what I can find.
@marnikbongers31866 жыл бұрын
Ik have the 14 turbo. I know that the mast is raked less back than te normal 14.
