Slick stuff, I think something along these lines will work great for a duck hunting blind on my outback. Great ideas and tips, I really appreciate all the homebrew mods you have come up with. Thx for sharing and be well.

Thanks! I just got a IT and first trip out I got whacked in the head and the main sheet got caught on the buckle to my life jacket. Glad to see there's a solution. Really enjoying watching your mods.

@@mechanicmike69onKZbin I built this Tuesday, but without the bend, and sailed with it Wednesday. It made all the difference in my enjoying the sail. I lose a little performance by changing the angle of the sail, but I'm in this for fun and comfort, not performance. Thanks again - it was literally a game-changer for me.

Hey mike, just wanted to let you know that I made my utility bar and I think it turned out pretty good. I have the 2015 TI and the measurements you used were pretty much spot on. I had to do a little tweaking, but for the most part I used your measurements. I thought that I could post a picture but either I am unable to do so or I'm just not knowledgeable enough. I still need to glue it all together and work out an anchor system for the bar. Ill most likely anchor it the same way you did. Any way I just wanted to let you know that I have put one together and I'm pretty impressed if I do say so myself. I can't wait to get it in the water, possible this weekend.

+Owen Halloran Wonderful. So happy to hear that the dimensions work for the 2015 and later Hobie TI's. Now I wonder about the Adventure Island. I'd love to see it. Rather than pictures maybe just take a short video and upload it to your KZbin channel. That may be easier. Were you able to make a curved top piece?
@owenhalloran62348 жыл бұрын
+mechanicmike69 I did make the curved top piece but I have to re-do it so I'm going to attempt to record it this weekend. Although I had said that the measurements were pretty much right on money. After putting it to the test on the water I discovered that there are adjustments to be made. I'll let you know the outcome of the re-build and video.

Looking to create sun cover with this idea. As much as possible. While not impeding sailing. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Seems to me that you will wreak your sail shape with this idea. If you put tell tails at the bottom, middle and top of the sail at the 1/3 from mast cord position you should see them all breaking even. If your raise the clew like this and bring it inboard from where it's cut is designed to be the bottom of the sail will need to be eased at the same time as the top of the sail will need to be trimmed. The Hobie's sail only has one set of tell tails on it so you can trim to that set but it very high on the sail which will now mean the bottom of the sail where the bulk of the sail are is will be way too flat and not efficient for moving the boat. This is all fine if you're not terrible interested in sailing optimally.

You are correct, it is not a speed alteration. But also note the riser was designed to be in line with the mainsheet when the sail is deployed (i.e. the main sheet continues on a straight line(up and down) from the rear connection at the stern to the sail). A taller person would require a higher riser and the effect you talk about would be accentuated. The biggest problem I've had with it so far,or should say noticed so far as I'm not racing it, is when you're going down wind the riser holds the mainsheet, main sail from going out fully left or right. Which is already a problem when the sail doesn't have a boom or whisker pole as the roller furling main sail design causes. The riser is a comfort accessory for touring or fishing and not for speed as you pointed out.

Great job Mike. This is just what I was looking for. I'm defiantly going to be building one of those for myself. I like the curved version the best so I think I'll attempt that one first. Thanks for taking the time to get this information out truly appreciate it.

+mechanicmike69, Here it is, the title is (utility bar 2015 Hobie Tandem Island) Its not as nicely done as your , but if you search for the title you'll see it. The boat is on the top if the truck so I was unable to get a pic of it on the boat. I should be able to get it on the boat today at the lake.

Owen Halloran Awesome job. Thanks for the sand idea for bending the PVC pipe.I will try that next time. Here's a link to your video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXupl6ulpspmmqs You also found a flaw with my instructions as I forgot to mention or note that the height of the Utility bar/main-sheet riser needs to be adjusted to the operators height for head/main sheet clearance.

+mechanicmike69 Thanks Mike I had fun making the utility bar I plan on adding the ram mounts on mine as well.

@@mechanicmike69onKZbin Mike, I actually like the flattened look that your version has -- it makes it look like a foil, the TI must be extra fast now LOL, sleek!
@rogerdawson77338 жыл бұрын
Mike did you consider any type of "traveler" or "barber-haul" setup to hike out the main going down-wind using your riser bar?
@mechanicmike69onYouTube8 жыл бұрын
+Roger Dawson Going for extra speed downwind you'd actually would want the main-sheet coming from as far back/stern on the boat as possible and as such would NOT have them through the riser. As the riser makes the main-sheet act like it's coming from about 3-4ft. forward of the stern, or stock location. Do you mean put the tracks right on the riser? I'm pretty sure the angles are wrong for that. Currently I use a paddle as a whisker pole for downwind travel. I even have a half moon cutout where it rests on the main=sheet.
@SuperBardley5 жыл бұрын
mechanicmike69 Paddle as a whisker, clever! How do you pin the butt end of the paddle?

New to the Island family (have had a 2011 PA14 and 2008 Revo 13), but I just acquired a 2008 AI. My AI rudder is the same as my Revo only bigger. But what about yours? I like the larger size etc. is this stock for a TI? Thank you.

Yes, this is the stock rudder on the Tandem Island. 2016.

Hi, I'm looking for the 3 steel-lined rope guides, can't seem to find any. Is there a model name / number / link?
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing this add on raiser design and spec details. I was wondering if you ever thought about adding a small outdoor to your Hobie island?
@mechanicmike69onYouTube6 жыл бұрын
'outdoor'? I assume you mean outboard motor. Not really, since you have sail, peddle, and paddle power. I'd get a different boat if I wanted an outboard on it.
