Lyrics:
I really hope that you find happiness
And that book you write’s magnificent
And I won’t help but stare at every word
It would burn holes in many mattresses
After I place it down
Read in full
That lovely little book
Titled “I Told You So”
Yeah, you’re Thoreau-ly mad at the world
And yeah it sucks, but this place will never change
I think it will probably get way worse
At best stay the same so
You’ll be fucking world renown
While I’m getting drunk at my house
Thinking about the dumb words I said
When I was a bit too high
Those two pills I took felt very nice
But made me break your lovely little heart
And I said, “Ashley, that’s so fucking dumb
To think that life just hands you some
Book that you barely have to write.
It’s gonna take like fuckin’ four or five
Bad books nobody would ever like
For you to live that wonderful life.”
And she stopped and she cried
That night, but she’s right
She’s going to write that book
That’s gonna make
Me look like a fuckin’ fool
And I know that she’ll find happiness
And her book will be magnificent
And I won’t help but stare at every word
It would burn holes in all these mattresses
After I place it down, read in full
That lovely little book titled “I Told You So”
Yea, you’re Thoreau-ly mad at me
But so what, I’m never gonna change
I’ll probably get way worse, at best, stay the same
So I will sit and I will drink myself
To either sleep or untimely death
Either way, I hope that you don’t cry, ya know
That’s just a part of life
Derek’s father and my father know
Cirrhosis is a tough way to go
So when we drink a lot after our show
Pretending that we’re not even scared at all
Genetics are what make me go to bed
Because there’s something that’s inside my head
That will click and make me drink until I’m dead
And Derek’s dad and my dad are done
So I will sit and I'll think
About this life
And If I even like it
But I know
That I’m
I’m gonna find
A little bit of happiness
It’s either in my house or somewhere else
But I am turning over every stone
And I will search the fuckin’ depths of this
Stupid place, my kids will have to live
In order just to smile a little bit
But you know, I’m Thoreau-ly in love with you
And ya I’m really scared that I may never change
But I’m so fucking done being so afraid
I really hope that you find happiness

Thinking about 3% this song is pretty interesting. The concept is almost identical, except his role is reversed. You wouldn't thinking he'd be the guy to say "Ashley that's so fucking dumb" when he's been subjected to that kind of doubt, firsthand, for so long. But he did it anyways, and he knew, how much he messed up. 3% makes this song make even more sense. Yeah it's natural to wish someone well when they go, but the fact that he understands so well, makes that bittersweet emotion so much clearer.

This song means so much to me. I quit drinking after close to binging away the last 10 years. I quit because I’ve watched my parents drink themselves into depression since I was born. I’m also at the age where it’s time to grow up and start working towards a career and I’m so fucking scared of leaving the job I’ve had for the last three years. But just like the song says “I’m so done with being afraid” I’ve dealt with mental issues my entire life and god damnit frank, you make it so much easier with the songs you make. If you read this, or anyone reads this, thank you.

Happiness- In my perspective is a song that's an apology. he's apologizing for the fact that he crushed his friend dreams in writing a book that will be a best seller, he emphasizes the fact that without pain and experience it can't happen. He traded his friendship for her success. Then goes on to admit that her book will make it, because he was that pain. He was that push so her book could make it. He then says that when this book does make it he'll look like fool for doubting her. He wishes her happiness and apologizes for what he did. He then emphasizes both in the beginning of the song and end that in time he'll stay the same, or get worse in time. He tells us that he drowns out the pain in his life with drinking or other ways. He admits that he has so many fears in life, and that those fears will drive him to death. Then at the end he admits that he will find that happiness she will find as well, he emphasizes the fact that he'll do anything to find that happiness. God bless you all and I hope this made sense. Remember this is my opinion and perspective of what the song means, Im not claiming to know it's meaning, but listening and giving my input on what it means to me.
