I recently felt ill while traveling in Sri Lanka. I sought medical attention at a private hospital in Colombo. My doctor was wonderful, holding degrees from India, Sri Lanka and England. He scheduled me for an MRI. Can you imagine the MRI (scan films and a CD-rom of the scan were given to me also) only cost me $30USD?? I was floored and I’m happy to report I’m completely healthy. Three cheers for affordable health care!! It’s sad to think the “progressive” US can’t match this care for its citizens.

Dan cannot believe it too. MRI cost only 30 USD. This is why Dan and I didn't bother to get travel insurance in Asia. =)

Yes, Health Care in the US has become a complete scam. Many Americans have nothing left to leave their heirs because when they become terminally ill, the hospital takes everything. Including their savings, their 401K (or IRA) and their house. Even if they had life insurance, the hospital will try to get that too. That's how health care is stealing the American dream. Sad, but true.

In Southwest Michigan at a nice brewery, an entree is a ridiculous $16-$18. Dental cleaning (no x-rays, only cleaning) a few days ago was $154. Combine that with miserable freezing temps much of the year.

Dan is absolutely correct on the expense of restaurants here in the US. I take my 86 year old mother lunch every Sunday and its always at least $50 and we don’t drink. Ice tea is $3-5. I was recently in Dumaguete, Philippines and a nice meal for 4 at a very nice restaurant including desert was $38us

Hi, just a note. IMHO, it is a great point that Chung is not American. There are so many channels from the American point of view. It’s a change to see two different points of view about the same place. Also she speaks very good English. I have never had any problem understanding her commentaries. A very clear voice at the correct volume. Thank you again.

Also, tuition in U.S. college is inflated to cost $30K to $100K+ per year! So times 4 years x 2 kids means $240K to $800K for college! So a doctorate degree is 2.5 times (6-7 more years) which means up to $2 million dollars of college and Medical Doctor loans! And it turn, the doctor charges $100 per 15 minutes or $400 per hour to get that doctor's note before you can get a prescription! So, better to find a cheaper college alternative in a foreign country?--Is there a youtube channel on this?

Thanks for sharing! In Malaysia, we don't have tip culture. Most of the restaurants already included 10% service charge in the bill. Some restaurant will leave the tip box on the cashier counter is because some customer don't want the small change(coins) so they can put into the tips box.

Well in the US you would typically have insurance from work. With insurance my yearly teeth cleaning is free. Doctors appointment is $25 per visit. And of course you need a proscription because the doctor know better what medication you need. But to have a comfortable life I work 12.5 hours a day Mon-Fri which kind of means I have no life but work.

In the U.S. most things cost what the market will bare, it has very little to do with what a reasonable profit would be. If you live in an expensive area in the U.S. you will pay even more. Anything that has a labor cost associated with it is through the roof now.
