Just the few blood tests I got last time I saw my doc was $900. Plus $250 to get the exam and discussing results. If I went to Malaysia for a much more extensive exam and tests, it would be like getting a free vacation with my blood tests.

Dear Dan, My mate used to travel a lot he has done 80 countries in 10 years he quid his job in London then traveled he went traveled for learning knowledge history cultures my mate could mate more money by staying on to work but he got fed up with money while he was single He traveled 10 years abroad without he got paid any penny but he still loved it the final year the tenths he met me while l was selling cooked food in streets 1976-1994 my mate used to work as a postman for 30 years When l was living in London l have to paid my one bedroom rent from 1995 to 2000 while l was working as a cleaner and a waitress

Dan, one choice we will have eventually is do we live outside the US, and pay for part B and a supplement. For my Dad that totaled about $400/month. So for Lidia and I $800/month. $9600/year I think we would rather put that in savings and use that money when we need it, and not pay for part B and a supplement. $9600 buys you a TON of medical care in other countries and if you stay healthy for 10 years…$96,000 !Your thoughts ?

If you never intend to come back to the US, great. If you intend to come back, even for a visit, be mindful of the following. If you cancel part B, you'll have to pay an 10% extra for every 12 month period you weren't enrolled (e.g. 2 years = 20% extra). In addition for your medigap policies (supplement), you'll have to go through medical underwriting (won't cover pre-existing conditions), unless you live in a state that guarantees coverage for pre-ex (specific times: California, Missouri and Oregon. Anytime:Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York). A tip: change your part D plan to a no or low cost plan at the annual enrollment. Then you can change it back before you come back for no problem. The highest medical cost is in the last 3 years of life. If you intend to travel long term, the best insurance is medical evacuation (also called repatriation insurance). That's the big event that needs $100k+ to get you home & it's why people create gofundme fundraisers. It's designed to cover the transfer to the nearest hospital that offers what you medically need, or to get you to your residence hospital from a foreign hospital. All travel ins & most global health ins include it (sometimes with extra fee). Make sure your travel ins doesn't exclude pre-existing conditions for the med evac portion. Some credit cards offer it if you charge your flights on them (but often have min max days of trip limits). A cheap way, is to buy membership from Divers Alert Network($40-$125). Or there are European based organizations memberships that offer it inexpensively (often under search & rescue) for their residents. But "membership" is not ins, the fine print says they determine if you need help and who helps you. For real ins, annual ACS repatriation(med evac) plan(158 EUR+) or GEOS ($200USD).

@@therehastobesomethingmoore if you don't have medicare, and no serious chronic conditions, move overseas and save on premiums! You can lookup the cost of common medical procedures in Malaysia. Knee replacement, for example, is $5-7k. I get my medical checkups there. The only reason to use USA healthcare is if it's not offered somewhere else, such as a special drug.

@@ethanmandel2413 That’s what we are thinking…we are 56 and 61 and in good health. We may engage up in Peru, Argentina, Guatemala…or SE Asia somewhere. We do not ever plan to live in the US again, so we just put money in savings every month, we exercise almost daily and eat plant based Whole Foods. We realize it is a bit of a gamble but many expats just fly to Medellin, etc for big stuff. Big Private hospitals here in Guatemala are not as good as SE Asia or Colombia, but not bad. We will do our quarterly blood panel and annual physical again this summer.

Do you guys do a GRAIL test anywhere? How about a coronary artery calcium scan? I see no reason for a lot of these tests like an ECG compared to coronary artery calcium scores.
