Misa, Cristall, Parekh, Yakemchuk, Hage, Greentree, just to name a few of the players left off the roster. This age group for Canada is far and away the best out of any of the top nations, we should not be losing to Latvia, or Czechia, it's completely unacceptable. Choosing to leave off some of the most offensively talented junior players in the world in favor of two-way players who can't drive play or score is either complete incompetence or spite from Hockey Canada. Pair the snubs with potentially the worst coach in the OHL, who didn't seem to want to do his job and you got the first back to back quarterfinal exit in more than 50 years. This is not a case of other countries catching up, this is a case of terrible roster selection, bad coaching and useless management at the top of Hockey Canada. This isn't hard, you choose the best 25 players available and a good coach and they figure it out.

Great podcast and I am a proud Canadian who is behind our players 100% but disagree with the comment about the U.S.A. not producing as many elite players.

I'll post here what I posted on TSN KZbin today. This too often expressed notion of "the rest of the world is catching up to us", expressed by on screen, voice or print pundit, is nothing but extended denialism. The message reply I got today from a very proud but deluded Canadian Hockey fan was that "The CHL has been, is now and will forever be the best training ground for young hockey players in the world!". It's time to admit that the mainstays in the WJC have caught up to us. The evidence is there. This year was abundantly clear evidence. Last year was clear evidence. The last decade has been building this evidence. Our development system is broken, all the way down to local Minor Hockey affiliated with Hockey Canada. The USA with their NCAA (and USA Hockey) system has far surpassed development (both athletically and educationally, and absolutely monetarily) of the CHL (with the OHL marketing itself as the "Best development league in the world"- because they said so). The Finns and Swedes are on Par, and arguably better. The Czech's. are arguably knocking on that door as well. This is not just Anecdote. The empirical evidence is there at minimum the last two WJC. The numerical evidence is there as well. In This years rosters all but four of USA are NCAA, with the four being OHL. Sweden, all homegrown there but 1 in the WHL. Finland, only 6 in the CHL, remainder nationally or USA developed (including AHL). Czechia offers a good argument against my point with 12 being from CHL- however the bulk of those being outside the OHL (only 3 are OHL- remember they beat us twice now). For further Argument is Latvia, only 4 in CHL, with 2 in the OHL and 2 in the LQ- and yes, that is Feldbergs. they beat Canada. Germany. 3 in the CHL, and though we "beat them", that should have been a decisive victory from the 1st period. It wasn't. Team Canada roster- 24 CHL, of which 14 were OHL. And they lost. Closest argument for Czechia having success because of CHL, could only be that they had more CHL rostered players OUTSIDE of the OHL. Sweden and Finland are powerhouses of hockey. They are largely producing and developing their own talent nationally or in Europe, and clearly see no need to export them to the NA programs. Same with the USA, and Czechia is quickly following suit. Latvia and Germany will in time get more NCAA births, and have less interest in anything in Canada- we proved to them and anyone watching to avoid us the last two years. CHL as a whole, produced less than 40% of draft picks (88) in 2024. These are their own numbers. First round pics were 14 (5 of which WHL)of 32, with the top two pics being NCAA and the third CHL, and 9 from the US System. This number has been declining steadily over the last 20 years. The evidence is staring us in the face. Bottom line, Hockey Canada, and Hockey in Canada, is simply not attractive any longer to developing hockey players that are serious about representing their nation or going high level. I don't take pleasure in coming to these conclusions, but avoiding the reality will only prolong the suffering. Change, massively, with a full moral inventory of the failings that have led to this point, is needed.

Seems like the rest of things in Canada, the roster is picked due to politics. Leaving off stars like Misa, Parekh, Yakemchuck and others for some grinders/muckers is insane. Dave Cameron and the rest of the staff should not be allowed near any national teams again.

The blame starts at the very top. Even the Canadian Minister of Sport has had an impact on this year's team. The introduction of a DEI hiring policy and non-hockey psychoanalists (after the sex scandal) has introduced an horrific non-hockey, un-Canadian approach that will stick for a decade.

You can't say Canada runs the show at this age, they just lost in the quarter finals. Somethings seems different about the team selection process in the past few years. Especially this year. It all starts with who they pick as a coach. I still think the concept of using an active major junior coach is a good idea. But they have to pick one that does it truly for the right reasons...impartially picking the best Team Canada, not promoting his club team players or other political decisions. They also need a coach that is both much younger than Cameron and with a far better track record. It has to be a winning coach...memorial cup, Stanley Cup as a former player, if not memorial cup then at least league championships. A track record not just a one hit wonder. Let the hockey guys decide, but I would much prefer to see 4 attacking lines with offensive fire power than a bunch of grinders. Why... Well in a short tournament, if we fall behind we need to score. If we have the good players... they have to puck, don't need to play defense as much. Plus who says top players cannot back check? Pick ones that will back check. But you can't teach a back checker to score. Also top players will not take so many penalties because they have the puck and the other guys are chasing them. Sooo frustrating. For the four Nations cup they have Jon Cooper from Tampa Bay coaching the team. Been to the finals, won some cups (recently), knows how to coach a group of stars. They will also have Bruce Cassidy as an assistant... another cup winner. That makes sense to me. They are not going to pick the coaches from Buffalo, Montreal or Ottawa to coach Team Canada. So why is Cameron there for the Juniors?

One problem with the entire global hockey, is Canada is actually the one training most of these guys. If you had to be playing in your home country, it may change the look of the teams.

The US junior teams play against USHL teams and NCAA teams (both levels, I and III). The Canada junior team could play against all CHL teams...but that may not work...too easy? Too much superstar talent on one team? Not sure. Imagine if Celebrini and Bedard were able to go to the tournament this year! I think we would have done a little better?
@brianlb782 күн бұрын
U.S. has definitely closed the gap with Canada. Just look at the NHL players. Canada use to have over 50% nhlers now it's down to 40 and the U.S. is at 30 or something. You can say no Bedard, no Celebrini, etc etc, and the U.S. had a player or two they could of brought, obviously not in the Bedard/Celebrini skill but much better than what they have so I think that is a weak argument. As said that team has multiple 1st round picks. In the end it's just bad management and other countries catching up. It was just a matter of time for it to happen.

The coaching staff failed this group of kids from start to finish. Dave Cameron is far too passive for a condensed tournament like this. His Ottawa 67s are below .500 and sit 2nd last in the Eastern Division. Then look at the London Knight's in the last calendar year amounted a stellar 75-12-12 record. Hockey Canada Management from the top down failed to even invite some serious players, a HC with zero passion, and the personality of a old jockstrap found in the lost and found box 📦

Think about the word "PROGRAM". Most other countries have development programs and these programs are such that the players (way more than we'll ever see) all subscibe to that program. We're not building robots, but everyone is on the same emotional and intellectual page. Canada has no "program".

Coaching was very poor (no practices plus goal challenge against the Czechs) but the biggest issue for me was that they basically excluded players from the NCAA (only one selected). That means players like Michael Hage and Dean Letourneau were ignored. The NCAA is a better league and teams are better funded than OHL teams.

Not just at wjc where they could have taken Iginla if healthy,Misa,Barlow,Parekh,Cristall,Yakemchuk,Lindstrom,Sennecke. - but at 4 nations no Scheifele,Suzuki,Barzal,Horvat,Doughty ect. - and a problem is political as well kids being weaker growing up in woke society/not as many tough good old farm boys/toughness from fighting brother/friends/parents. Hockey used to be cheaper not 10k+ only rich kids can play AAA. They develop lazy habits play when want to. Or care about themselves more than winning a StanleyCup. You see guys asking for trades/only want hot low tax states instead of putting head down work in and showing value on own team.
