Hockey East arguably has the fiercest rivalries in college hockey. We take our hockey serious in the northeast

Matthews Arena is arena royalty. It was also the original home of the Boston Celtics. Within a short walking distance is the site of the first World Series. There are some cool statues there, but nothing of the original field remains. Great sports history in a very small area.

Matthews Arena, and Windsor Arena in Windsor, Ontario, the first home of the Detroit Red Wings, are the only two original NHL arenas that are still standing. Matthews is the only one still used for hockey.

Unfortunately Matthews Arena is likely not going to be around much longer. There are structural issues with the building. Northeastern is planning on building a new arena.

YES! Thank you for finally doing this! Now you just need to review the 5 independent schools: Alaska-Fairbanks, Alaska-Anchorage, Long Island University, Stonehill, and Lindenwood!

As a Boston area resident, been to all the Hockey East arenas located in E MA and UNH for a game. The student sections and the band create quite an atmosphere. Tickets are affordable in comparison to Bruins.

I shed a tear watching this video. The honours it would be to skate in these stadiums. Great video @thewideworldofstadiums

As someone who played hockey for 10 years and played on several of these surfaces, here’s how I personally felt skating on them. Umass: Smooth, little daunting with all the seating. Umass Lowell: Somehow a little bright at ice level, hard to see Merrimack College: Seems like it had different dimensions than other rinks, ice was a little rough and had to get my skates resharpened after playing UVM: Unique experience, can honestly say it’s like playing in an actual barn

Maine here: It’s unreal. You can feel the residual energy in the building.

It's crazy to think back to playing intramural hockey at UConn back in the early 90s when all the campus had was an outdoor rink. It took a bit of time to get used to wearing thermals under my gear but outside air temps in the teens and low 20s made for some great ice.

The first row of the balcony in Matthews is probably the best view in all of hockey, hangs right over the ice on the sides. Sadly there are problems with the foundation and Northeastern have filed to knock it down and replace it. The Whittemore Center and Tsongas Arena were built by the same company within a few years of each other. Sidenote: I'm actually in the still you used of the Whitt at 6:44, as a long time watcher of this channel I popped! UConn's new arena doesn't meet league standards either (not enough seats) but they were given a pass. Alfond is a fire trap. Merrimack and Providence used to be absolute dumps until the 2010's.

Correctomundo...Gutterson Field House is most certainly known as the Gut. I have fond memories of watching Marty St. Louis and Tim Thomas play all four years at UVM. Never dreamed I'd see one them hoist the Stanley Cup, let alone both of them.

The best feature of Agganis Arena is the pitch of the one tier of seats. It’s steep so the upper rows are closer to the ice than typical. Ps- I spent two summers in HS (early 80s) working as a custodian at Northeastern. During that time I spent a week scraping paint off the Matthews Arena balcony in preparation for a new layer of paint. Not fun.

I love steep seating bowls and I'm not too sure why it took so long for architects to catch on to it. The previous generation of rinks built before Agganis (UMass, UNH, UML) were all standard bowls.
