Coach Matt of the Hockey Players Club and Quest Hockey provides a series of drills that will progressively help you master your outside edges.
Outside edges are really important for hockey players as they're key to perform turns, tight turns, escapes, crossovers, stops, and much more. Start simple and build.

Great stuff. Best outside edge video I’ve seen so far. The others tend to get way too difficult way too quickly. Thanks!

I agree! For DECADES I have skated on the inside edges with weak outside edges on crossovers. But your video shows the need to be able to balance statically and step on the outside edges BEFORE progressing to a "glide" (let alone a crossunder PUSH!). At my age, (yes, I'm old!), it's a little "scary" or intimidating to trust the edge on a glide without slipping! But more importantly, I never realized the need to keep the shoulder/hip line pointing to the CENTER of the circle or arc. Any rotation away from the center will cause a drift back to the inside edge. (Ask any figure skater!!). Again, thanks for starting the outside edge explanations FROM THE BEGINNING!

Finally. Someone mentions eyes looking where to go. Look through the turn. They all say head up, but never say where to look. Haven’t found a coach or skating video yet that mentions this until I found this one.

This is awesome! I'm an adult who's just getting into hockey for the first time. Grew up skating, but realized recently that if you're just going to free skate you might spend your entire life skating on inside edges only. My outside edge balance is super weak, but I've been focusing on it a lot recently and this video is going to be my next rink companion. Thanks so much!

My son is just starting to play house league. His right skate is naturally falling on the outside edge when pushing/gliding. I do remind him to keep both skates on the inside edge but it naturally falls outwards when he's not mindful. Do you have any drills or exercises to correct that?

Which part of the blade is supposed to be mainly used during the turns? Front or back? Thanks
@HockeyRecap
@HockeyRecap 4 жыл бұрын
The middle with a slight forward lean. It's important not to lean back, especially entering a cross over as you need weight on your front outside foot to initiate the cross over. If you're leaning back, you'll lack a knee bend, reducing your explosiveness and proper follow-through.

Instructive video, however, there is a major point (to me) missing; weight distribution... I have visioned several of these tutorials, and they all seem to not indicate where the weight should be placed; Either foot wise, but also skate wise. Let me explain where I am coming from; I am a roller skater, and I decided to do ice for a change of scenery. In roller, we tend to place our weight on the front of the skate. On ice, the weight needs to be on the back of the skate or central in some of the moves. Especially on cross overs. It is the same principle when you learn to ski. They tell you how you need to transfer the weight to start a turn, or how you need to keep the weight balanced on both feet on fresh snow. It all seems to be missing in these videos.

Thanks for the feedback. We teach our players to have their weight on the outside edge with a slight forward lean. Leaning back on your outside edge of your inside food entering a cross over will reduce your knee bend and follow through and therefore explosiveness of the cross over. It's important to be relatively balanced on your edges, front-to-back, with a slight forward lean. With a deep knee bend and weight on the outside edge of the front, inside foot, a player can explosively drive their outside edges outward.
