@@10.11.9 Kharlamov was one of the greatest. Though the technique and smoothness of play was not at Datsyuk’s level. Nobody is as smooth as Datsyuk on ice. And the pace of the play when you see Connor McDavid or Pavel Bure is like 2x while Datsyuk is like 0.5x. This is what makes him MJ of hockey - “his iceness”.

Pavel is the greatest player in professional hockey history. I am from MI and grew up watching his entire career in Detroit from start to finish there is no question. There is no debate to be had. No discussion. The likes of number 13 will never be seen again. One thing people don’t realize is how tough he was. Not someone you wanted to take your eye off he would put your ass on the ice he had some big hits. Also his defense was amazing he was a pickpocket.

I was always in complete awe when I had a chance to watch his games. Of all the players, he, Mike Modano and Sergei Fedorov were simply the outmost pleasure to watch playing. Each of them phenomenal skaters, fluid and smooth; but Pavel Datsyuk was unique in the level of creativity he put on display when he decided he feels like playing for real. He had not one but two extra hockey gears he could turn on. Undeniably a product of Russian hockey school at it's absolute best, Datsyuk could take the game into his own hands when he felt like it. I can't find words to describe what I've always felt when I saw him play. A ballet on ice? A chess game master with a hockey stick? In my mind, Fedorov and Datsyuk were by far the best players of all times, each in his own way. Their hockey IQ was off the charts. While there were and there are many very good players before and after them, it's yet to be seen if anyone can come even close to these 2 Russians who in my opinion were most complete players in the history of the game.

@@jeffreykaufmann2867 Datsyuk was widley considered one of the best in the world right along with crosby in his prime by just about every analyst and most NHL players at the time. Its just weird to see people try to hate on a guy that was one of the best complete players to ever play. its weird. Lots to take into account. Its pretty obvious Datsyuk could have lead the league in goals and assists. He basically did what he wanted when he wanted, but being a two way player comes with the sacrifice of less goal production. Thats not really a debate, its just a fact. I point to yzerman as an obvious example. Yzerman scored more than 60 goals, i believe a few times until Bowman came to detroit. Look at his stats pre bowman and after to see how much playing defense affects goal scoring. Since then detroits system hasnt been tailored for goal scorers. Its apparent just looking at Yzermans stats pre scott bowman and after. Im not taking anything away from McDavid, or Grets. McDavid is a blast to watch. Im just pointing out that to some players, even as stupid talented as Datsyuk, goal scoring wasnt what he played for but easily could have. I mean were not going to call Ovi the best to ever play when he beats Grets record are we? thats my point.

Not sure there's any equally talented players in the NHL today. I was lucky enough to have watched live (NHL Package) most of his games and saw most of these highlights as they happened. An absolute treasure to watch. Much stronger than people realize. They could do a Pavel hits highlight video.

I used to think I was a Red wings fan. Then I realized I’m just a Datsyuk fan. I miss seeing him in the playoffs. To this day that backhander he scored on the sharks just blows my mind. 20 foot backhander far side with a dude on your back. What a Legend!!! Maybe the most consistent player I’ve seen play. The guy does not make mistakes and there is no doubt people brought their A game when going against Pavs cause if they don’t they will be in a top 10 for all the wrong reasons!!!!

When he retires, after the waiting period he'll be in Hockey Hall of Fame. No one, no one I have ever seen had his talent. In the '90's with Detroit it would have been Cup after Cup after Cup!

One of the few greats where you don't watch him for stats. He just naturally did things that nobody else could do and didn't care about himself. He can be off the scoresheet but you'd say 3 times in a game that's not normal what he just did. Full speed tape to tape cross ice backhand saucer, make guys run into each other, and literally play keep away in the corners with pros as if he was a pee wee coach against his kids

Picasso Datsyuk. So grateful to have had the most inventive and skilled player of all time. No one like him before, ever or since. I ran into him and Hudler outside of a bar after the 2008 Stanley Cup parade, there was no English being spoken, we were all drunk. It was just fun and a great experience to meet a legend in our cities moment of celebration

Notice the way he pays attention to the footwork of the defender, threading the puck between open legs in such a way the defender loses balance at a critical moment. The tempo of his moves gets the defender reaching, then at that critical moment the puck slides between legs in a way the opponent's balance shifts to his heels.
