The moment with Winifred where you see that she actually loves her sisters, despite them all being villains, was moving. I didn't feel for the three sisters but it absolutely did make me think about my own sister, and I agree with Kelsey that it brought me and every woman I have talked about it with to tears. I loved this movie, sure it wasn't as good as the first but it was a perfect sequel and the ideal level of goofy/corny/and nostalgic that I was looking for. It was campy and the perfect follow-up after almost 3 decades.

The only thing that really bothered me about the movie was that in the first movie they said Winifred received the book from the devil himself, and it's different in the second when they tell the origin.
@ribottostudio2 жыл бұрын
this movie seemed to forget a few things from the first movie; like WHY is Billy suddenly alive after all this time AND WAS STILL ALIVE when he was dead after the end of the first movie? The point of that happening is that all the things the witches did was done when they died. Bringing Billy Back? Gone when they died. Thackery was able to move on when they died. In this movie Winnifred acts SURPRISED to see someone use salt when in the first "salt! What a clever little white witch". Also this might seem like a nitpick, but I haaated the brown filter they used for the woodland scenes. Gross.
@nicoleveda2 жыл бұрын
@Ribotto Studios Billy just went back to sleep after the events of the original but he was still alive. She wasn't surprised to see the salt. She was surprised that the salt shot the powers back because the main character was a witch. You could see the salt glow blue like her hands.
@sarahlaurent622 жыл бұрын
It didn't bother me because 1. the Devil can take many forms that's like its main thing and 2. in the first one it was told by Alison, who was not present when the witches were given the book. So how can you guys just blindly believe her? It's a rumor 300 years old, obviously it's not going to be the real version.
@GiraffeOverlords2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel like there were just lost plot lines and things that happened in other that were never explained that they didn't never even touched on like why Billy's awake again and if the sisters died by glitter that means that they don't die because they came back the second time and died with the same kind of glitter will we know their true death so many things unanswered nothing that's kind of irritating as I feel like lately all of the '90s movies are being sequel or remade and some are for the better but somewhere just like come on stop this isn't fast and the furious you don't need to make 20 movies about the same movie

On Kelsey’s theory, I think Danny’s witch outfit matching Hannah’s witch outfit is more of a nod to how in touch Salem was with real witches. I am assuming they got Danny’s costume in Salem, so someone in Salem not only knows what a real witches outfit looks like but specifically ‘Mother’ Witch. What’s funny is that means Danny dressed as their Mother for Halloween and none of them noticed.

"I just needed to see them. Like TRULY see them." Yeah I feel this. The sisters felt so disconnected from the teenager trio they didn't even feel like part of the movie. Here it just felt like things happening there's like 3 different plot points going on with the sisters trying to find the mayor, the shop owner trying to find the ingredients for the maxima spell, the teenager trio....I'm not even sure what they were doing. They also didn't feel really connected either like Max, Dani and Allison. And I like that how they get to the sisters felt more natural there too; Max didn't believe in it "it's just a bunch of Hocus Pocus" is iconic, and Allison's family I think owned the home of the Sanderson's and did tours there and stuff. So that curiosity leads to the whole plot of the movie happening. I literally just watched the sequel YESTERDAY and can't remember how things kick off in the movie. I haven't seen the first in a long time and remember almost everything. That says a lot.

As a child, that's what I loved about them- The sisters were just straight-up evil, but could never really cause major damage because they were so dumb they could be outsmarted by two teens and a kid. In this movie they just got random powers, Sarah was somehow a lot smarter, and they seemed to know random things about the present they shouldn't have.

I live VERY close to where this movie was filmed. It gives me a huge sense of pride that it was filmed in my tiny little state, it was BIG NEWS here. I loved seeing some of the places that I know being featured and seeing some of the sets that were built. I also love that there were POC featured in key roles. The young Sanderson sisters were so great too. It wasn't meant to be some huge award winning movie, it was meant to feed nostalgia and to bring new audiences into the world of Hocus Pocus, and I think it did a great job of both.

Kelsey's opinions were honestly so infuriating lol I'm so glad Garrick and Zach validated this: stop trying to give villains a sympathetic background or redeem them! Unless you give them a LONG AND THOUGHT OUT road to get there (like Zuko in Avatar) I don't want this watered-down redemption arc thrown in at the last minute. They were always the baddies since the first movie! They were formidable and charismatic antagonists. You've missed the whole point if you try to make them the good guys! A possible alternate ending that would feel deserved: Winnie loses her sisters and flies into a more predictable rage, goes all out with her powers in a last vengeful plot. Make it last a good portion of the movie, like 20 min or something, where you see her increasingly lonely and unfulfilled by her plan. That way, she stays true to her character when she loses her sisters (she doesn't just do a 180 and lose her angry evil witch side) but she's also learned that she can't do it alone, and when the main characters finally do defeat her, she accepts it as a relief to be back with her sisters. None of this "friendship was the true magic" shit. If you MUST redeem the villain, don't do it at the expense of their own character motivations.

The weird thing about this movie is it was half remake, half homage. This movie recycled much of the plot from Hocus Pocus, and even followed a few parallel plot beats and timings. So, to Zach’s point - the witches are summoned with the black flame candle 30 minutes into the original movie as well. Perhaps it’s just more satisfying in the original because the audience theoretically doesn’t yet know how or when the witches might be summoned. In the interim, we are introduced to Max’s developing relationships with Dani (with whom there is clear tension) and Allison (with his puppy love), which are simple and easy to follow. Binx and Billy help move and complicate the plot, help tell the story through function and comedy. Binx’s own plot thread is cleverly bundled with Max’s, so it doesn’t distract from the main events of the movie (and actually, I’d argue it’s one of the most satisfying threads, because Binx’s view of death is so cathartic). Between Max’s bundled plot threads and the witches’ plot, this movie gives the impression of a few clear, interweaving, fun, and simple stories. Contrast this with Hocus Pocus 2 - we keep the “family tension” plot (Becca and Cassie, who acts like a pseudo sister)and the Sandersons chasing the kids and Traske. But we’ve also got Gilbert’s entire third storyline with Billy and the sisters, Becca’s growing witch powers thing, the Magicae Maxima problem, some distracting callbacks to Binx (if the whole point was that he crossed over, and then the witch’s “know” the cat in the house is secretly Binx, we as an audience assume he will indeed come back), and then, the real kicker, some serious plot with actual gravitas, ie. Winnie grappling with the concept of death and its inevitability. That’s heavy at the best of times, but particularly in such a glossy-looking follow up to a notoriously campy original. One of the things that I think sets these apart the most critically is that they follow very different “Disney family” movie formulas - Hocus Pocus is a family movie because it has jokes for kids and jokes for adults, which was a classic formula at the time. Hocus Pocus 2 feels like a Disney Channel Original Movie, and gives a clear overall impression that it’s meant primarily for child audiences. The jokes the adults might laugh at here were designed with the child in mind (as opposed to the innuendo jokes in the original). This means that the reliance on nostalgia could be trying to fill the gap in adult audience interest. Thus, an adult audience member who has no strong positive connections with the first film would be less likely to enjoy this film or feel invested in following all its many plots. I for one was STOKED that Becca has powers, because it seems to pay off the “clever little white witch” comment that Winnifred makes in the first movie; in this world, there could be legit witches anywhere. Could there simply be too many plot threads? Do the plot events hit a little too close to home and border a little too hard on reality? If audiences came in expecting an equally camp sequel, were some maybe put off by how (ironically) grounded it was at times? Did people who only knew Hocus Pocus through memes come in with expectations that didn’t translate? Who knows. As someone who has seen the original every Halloween since it came out, I laughed a lot. TLDR: I was sick off work today, had too much Buckleys, and accidentally wrote a short essay. Hocus Pocus 2 is pretty good if you’ve seen the first and like a DCOM, otherwise you’ll probably find it to be middling.

There's something to be said that the original was done under Touch Stone, which was Disney, but minus the Disney branding. They put movies under touchstone they found to be too "risky" which included who framed Roger rabbit. Now hocus pocus is widely branded as Disney and comes with the family branding they're known for, maybe the reason it feels so much more "Disney" family friendly than the first one

Kelsey was the moment in this podcast. Like, so on point with everything. The ending was a tearjerker for me too! I will say though, I agree, the teen witches were a little too Disney tween for me too. Honestly, I don't think the writers did a great job of developing them either because whether they had powers or not really didn't matter to the story, and it seemed like that part was just thrown in for a sequel that jump starts a new-age Hocus Pocus. Which, fair.
@ashleystaley13082 жыл бұрын
I think the fact that Kenny Ortega didn't direct this sequel is the reason why I felt disappointed with this film. I'm sure that if he had directed it he would have asked Thora Birch, Omri Katz, and Vinessa Shaw to come back, even if it was just cameos. Also when it comes to the plot, and how it took them a long time to figure out the script, they easily could have used the sequel book written by A. W. Jantha. The book was published by Freeform Books, which is owned by Disney. In the book they even bring back Jay and Ernie. Also I agree with what Zach and Garrick were saying about the witches and redeeming them.

That's pretty cool, concerning SJP. I found out recently that it's likely that one of the pastors who left Salem and then who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials is an ancestor of mine. I haven't been able to find anything definite yet, but it's likely. I was really disappointed that there weren't more connections to the first movie in the new one, but the spelled citizens in the town going down the street felt like a nod to Thriller, with how synchronized they were in their dancing.
@anabundanceofsarcasm2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm a day late, but to answer Garrick's question about how they got banished instead of hanged in the beginning, it's actually accurate. That's in 1653, and the witch trials were 1692-1693. Women like them were more commonly exiled to the outskirts of town or a new town entirely pre-trial. And then original Hocus Pocus starts in 1693 and that's when they're hanged on Halloween. Which isn't quite accurate because hangings stopped in spring 1693. But it definitely wouldn't have had the same vibe if it was May instead of October. (Also agreed, guilty pleasure and I was happy with the flashback opening. I didn't even realize it was that long into the movie when they actual sisters appeared)

I liked it. I think we're all being far too critical of something that while was iconic to our childhoods, is just a movie at the end of the day. Standing on its own, I think it's good...we need to remember, yes, it was a sequel, but it was SO LONG AGO, they likely tried to make it more desirable to a younger audience. And I agree with Kelsey...I liked the touching scenes.

Couldn't finish the movie. It was a sad remake of a magical story. The house store owner shouldn't have seen the sisters at all, all the kids were under a spell in their pajamas because it was the next morning when they were destroyed in the cemetery....they fucked that up so hard and took me out of the story immediately....they didn't have them be the evil, whitty, clever witches they were in the first one either. Winifred learned in the first movie each time they got tricked (like when she came out speaking French in the pottery kiln). The people who made this movie think were capitalistic idiots and you know what, maybe they're right....

Here is my list of grievances: in the town Halloween party scene in the 1st HP, you see Winnie watch the lead singer of the band sing "I put a spell on you". She pauses and seems to get the idea to use that song as a spell (which we were shown in the hanging scene at the beginning is a way they use spells). In the 2nd HP she just suddenly knows the entirety of "One way or another" for no reason at all- when had she heard it before?
@snappylobster31182 жыл бұрын
In the 1st HP, there was a direct plot link between Thackary/Emily's story and Max/Dani's story. The parallel made the danger Dani was often in seem very real and the ending that much more satisfying- Not only did Max save Dani from Emily's fate, he righted the wrong that had been done to Thackary. In the 2nd they tried to do this with the three best friends, but like... they didn't parallel well at all. Winnie took advantage of her sisters often and didn't appreciate them, while the three friends just had one of them get into another friend group. The friends reuniting vs Winnie realizing she was lost w/o her sisters connection is very very weak.
@snappylobster31182 жыл бұрын
While I enjoyed a lot of the jokes in the Wallgreens scene, it felt so incredibly long, like they had stipulated in the contract w/Disney that they needed to have the scene be a certain amount of time. It felt out of place, like a literal commercial.
@snappylobster31182 жыл бұрын
The flashback I didn't mind but the whole reason that the sisters hate Salem... is because they were orphaned and the head of the town thought she should get married??? Listen, we might forget this but puritan culture didn't exactly allow for women to be independent. Women having any power is the source for a lot of the historical witch accusations because they were a threat to the patriarchal structure of that society. Marriages at the time weren't as what we see them today, they were essentially business agreements. What was Winnie going to do to support her and her sisters? They need to eat, keep the house warm and maintained, they needed to stay clothed. How were they going to survive without the support of their community....
@snappylobster31182 жыл бұрын
Banishment essentially meant death in colonial Massachusetts; This was such a cruel overreaction to her refusal that just didn't make any sense to me. If Winnie had rejected MULTIPLE offers of marriage, banishment would maybe make more sense. What about the most logical reason for them to be rejected by society... practicing Witchcraft???? Modern morals reject the idea that a woman needs a man, as did I as a child; I saw these women being three little weirdos in the woods as a great thing, bucking the oppression of a patriarchal society. I was under the impression they had ALWAYS been those three little weirdos, a community outside of the norm. Them BECOMING Witches as opposed to just inherently being Witches is... a massive bummer.

I hated the boyfriend in this, he was too stupid, and the fact she was still dating him when even she knows he's dumb as shxt. 36:16 HARD AGREE. They didn't need a backstory or need redeeming. We wanted goofy, evil witches suffering with modern tech.

I like that they followed the same general format of the first, where it started in the past and then they took it to modern times. I wasn't bothered that they witches were introduced after 20-30 minutes, I figured they would build the anticipation.

i wonder how the podcasts getting individual channels works from a technical standpoint-when you search up the podcasts, only the TryPods channel shows up and if you click on a Guilty Pleasures or YCSWU episodes it shows it as its own channel?? thats so cool! also so confusing, would love to know how that all works🤔

I find it very funny that the “theory” that Max wasn’t asked to come back was because he was so annoying to deal with in the first one

I watch trick r treat every year! It's the perfect Halloween movie. Also I liked the review. I'd hesitate to show our 5 yr old hocus pocus 1, but this makes me inclined to watch the 2nd one together, while I consume the nostalgia bate.

Cassie’s (the mayor’s daughter) boyfriend is played by Froy Guttierez (apologies if I’ve misspelled that) and he does such a good job playing that himbo 😂😂😂. Also an edit: The actress who played Dani couldn’t appear due to scheduling conflicts, and I think they decided not to even ask Allison and Max after that because of “all or nothing” thinking

Why are the videos so hard to find now? When I click on the channel there's no "Videos" tab.

I loved Hocus Pocus 2! I loved the backstory and the sisterhood. My favorite scene was the Walgreens!
