one of my absolute favorite quarantine memories was waking up one morning and coming out to the living room to find my parents fully engrossed in this movie. at first I think they were watching it to make fun or because they thought it wasn’t as great as it is, but by the time I got out there they were halfway through and dying laughing at every joke. it was fun to be an expert on a movie my parents had never seen (for once) and anticipating all their reactions to my favorite moments. plus my dad usually never finds teen movies from my generation at all worthwhile but he genuinely loved this one. it was a great morning.

Love this episode! One of my fav movies! To answer some of the pod questions you asked about movie plot: 1. Yes they are in high school. Viola and Sebastian are twins aka same grade. They are rival private rich kid schools. 2. Sebastian got kicked out of Cornwall for ditching/doing bad in school so his parents enrolled him at Illyria.(Viola goes to Cornwall, but it’s spring break which is why she’s not in school. Sebastian was never into sports he was into music so him and Viola were already known for having “gender norm” swapped identities with their parents)
@burritosandboobs2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying the Sebastian/Cornwall scenario I was yelling at my screen lmao
@magius232 жыл бұрын
To answer your question about why Sebastian went to the other school (Illyria if my memory serves), he got expelled from his previous school (Cornwall I think) for ditching class for doing things related to his music. If you recall the reason why Sebastian left in the first place is his band went to do a small tour in London. He was definitely not a soccer player.

I feel like a big chunk of the movie was missed by all 3 of you guys because of the confusion over Sebastian coming back from London lol. Sebastian was sent to Illyria because he kept getting kicked out of schools. When he got back from London, he was kissed by Olivia and he went back to his room. He was still asleep when the players came to tell him that he needed to get to the field. So yeah he was confused but he was also half asleep so he just went with it lol

i watched mila tequila's amanda bynes series on youtube so insightful on her life. unfortunately this movie specifically played a role in her spiraling as it caused her alot of gender dysphoria. one of her biggest movies had her dressed as a man for like 80% of the time and her image was very girl next door. meanwhile her contemporaries were seen as beautiful it girls of the 2000s. it really messed with her head. hoping she's getting the help she needs! this movie meant so much to many people including myself 'my favourite's gouda' is in fact a cultural turning point
@danradfan122 жыл бұрын
To be fair Cornwall (Viola's initial school) cut the soccer team not just because. It was cut because not enough students signed up meaning there wasn't enough girls to form a team. Also I think Sebastian going to play soccer was him kinda waking up all delirious (and probs jetlagged) and stumbling to the field cause Olivia mentioned it and then was trying to find her (cause he says "Soccer game that's what that girl was talking about) and then because everyone thought he was Viola Sebastian they just got him prepped and shoved him out there and it all happened so fast and he just didn't have time to ask what was going on and why he was there and was just rolling with it. At least that's kinda how I saw it.

I still don't understand why they're confused about Sebastian not being good at soccer. He doesn't play soccer. I wouldn't be surprised if he's never played soccer. He's a musician, that's his thing, Viola plays soccer, that's hers. She attends a boarding school as her brother, who has never even been to this boarding school. She chose to try out for the soccer team, pretending to be her brother, so that she can then be on the boys team. You can tell when Sebastian is told to play, he's really confused as to why and how he even got put on the team.

As someone in the transmasc community, this movie and “Just One of the Guys” 1985, Disney’s “Motorcross” 2001, “Mulan”-obviously, and I’m know there were others I can’t remember, where so influential for me. My style of humor was very similar to OG Amanda Bynes so having her play this gender bending role was huge! Obviously there are problems with it bc of the era it was created but when there was basically no positive representation anywhere, we turned to farcical adaptation for entertainment. Wish you could have gotten a trans guest for this one just bc it would have been a great opportunity to celebrate trans joy for your listeners/viewers/fans.

That said I'm angry this is one of the only modern teen Shakespeare movie not to get a tv series (i.e. clueless and 10 things I hate about you) and I see it easily do so. I'm the only one who thought that movie was toxic as hell?? I'm trans / masc aligned and this movie kinda makes me sick. The ending is literally teenagers showing the school their genitals to "prove" what gender they are. Might as well call it "16 Year Old Gender Reveal." Having boobs doesn't make you a girl, Amanda. There are harmful gender stereotypes everywhere in that movie. The disney tv movie "Motocrossed" is FAR SUPERIOR and I rec all the trans guys in the comments go watch it. It awakened something in me I didn't understand for another 10 years, and inexplicably made me beg my mom to buy me a motocross bike lol

The reason Sebastian (the brother) got sent to the new boarding school is that he got kicked out of his last school. She only wanted to infiltrate the boys program to prove to her "real" school that she should be allowed to play on the boys team. Which helped because the season opener was also the big rivalry game, which is why everyone was at that first game. Cross town rivalry is a big deal in certain places.

Okay so feel free to correct me but I remember that the brother got kicked out of his old school so he's supposed to start that boarding school. His sister, Viola, was dating the boys soccer captain at her school when her girls team was cut and she made the comment that she should be able to join the boys team. The boys team laughed at her and she asked her bf to back her up ("you told me I was better than half your team") and he didn't so she broke up with him. She finds out her brother is going to ditch his first weeks of school and they have a team that will go against the boys team of her school so she tries to join to prove she's just as good of a player as the boys.
