Hodge differential rotary engine at the New England Air Museum. Two row, eighteen cylinder, 320 horsepower, built in 1918, geared such that the propeller rotates at 1500 rpm in one direction and the crankcase 500 rpm in the opposite direction. This was an attempt to reduce the significant gyroscopic forces generated by the whirling crankcase mass in the traditional, fixed crankshaft rotary engine designs.
