Zane ,Never be afraid to tear apart an item to repair it, These old parts were designed from the get go to be repaired or rebuilt, they are relatively simple as compared to the products that are being produced today with designed obsolescence. Think through how something operates and you'll figure why it doesn't work. ie path of current through the starter circuit. Also on stubborn fasteners, try tightening the fastener slightly then loosen it.

That's true Edmund! 😀 Things sadly aren't made to last anymore. It's a throw away society now. Appreciate the kind words and suggestions 🙂👍

Another suggestion is a cabinet sandblaster, Harbor Freight comes to mind, they're not super expensive and clean rust up nicely.

Badger bob to the rescue! Thankfully he had some wisdom for ya before it was sledgehammer time 🤣. Like you said though it’s better to have it all cleaned up and basically remanufactured it should last a lot longer now! Taillights look great too, I bought some new headlights from head light depot last year and I remember sweating the delivery thinking they’d be cracked by the time I got them. You just never know if the fedex guy is gonna have a bad day and your parts are the ones to suffer..glad they made it safe.

He helped for sure! 🙂👍 oh yeah, I'm always worried about the delivery guy being rough on items. I'm in disbelief that they made it without damage 😅

Zane you need to buy one of the tools that when you hit it with a hammer it drives the screw inward and twists at the same time . They work great on slotted screws that are really stuck, phillips too.

This video was awesome! I’ve never taken the time to watch how a starter works before, so this was real interesting to watch (You know how much I enjoy taking stuff apart). I was genuinely surprised that something that old still functioned when you hooked that battery cable up. Nothin like doin a job yourself and saving hundreds!!👍

Thanks Cody! 🙂👍 I appreciate the compliment my friend. I was surprised it worked also 🤣. I like this Jeep but there's no way I would pay that much for a new starter lol

Isn't sorting out electric issues fun! 😆 Make sure you clean up the block mounting surface good to, it'll make a world of difference down the road. Looks like you're either going to have to find the control rods for that starter button or put a stud on top of that starter & wire it like a newer system. Seems like your ignition switch already has a start position on it & you already have the proper solenoid. All depends upon how period correct you want it to be.

Tons of fun my friend! 🤣👍 I'm going to look into that a bit more. Not sure which route I plan on taking yet 🙂

Check out impact screw driver sets. Come with a few different screw head bits. Cost about ten bucks. You whack them with a hammer and there built in rotary action takes those stubborn screws out. Generally without messing up the heads as an added bonus. They have been around for years. Take care.

Good progress Zane, did you get the back part of those contacts clean? I would take a hammer, not the sledge, and tap on the starter button. There may be enough rust and crap in there to keep it from going in far enough to make the contact.
@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE4 жыл бұрын
I may try that 🙂👍 I got them as clean as I could. Just wasn't good enough 🤣 Thanks Jason!
@johnqpublic90744 жыл бұрын
The "magnets" being rusty won't harm anything... hitting the coils, or the armature windings with a wire wheel or sander and removing insulation would be worse. BTW looks like a 3a or 3b starter... 2a never had the switch on the body of the starter...
@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE4 жыл бұрын
🤔 Hmm. I wondered if this was a different starter than what came on this originally. This is the only Jeep I've had so I'm not very familiar with them.

Hard to do that while playing music in the background. Would get my video pulled for copyright. Dogs barking outside, cars driving by etc. I live by a busy state road..
