Due to high demand of folks wanting to see my new alignment equipment I purchased last month I took this opportunity to show you the process of performing a wheel alignment on a 93 Dodge Stealth. So far I have been very satisfied with our purchase of the Challenger lift with Hofmann alignment equipment. -Enjoy!

Oh that's an nice machine Eric hey if you sit in a car like you said, and it changes things and you're always driving the car with you and your girlfriend and or your wife, you then should put a 180 lb in the driver seat and 125 lb in the passenger seat then do your adjustment that way you have the same alignment that you're looking for when the wait in the car when you're driving the car I think that would be much better but alignment cuz if you are lying it and the way and it changes things the lineman's not there then

Last time I had my alignment done I asked about whether it was aligned to the road crown or level ground. The tech said it’s adjusted for level. I don’t see it much anymore, but 20 years ago I worked in Quebec. On the Autoroute (same as a US interstate) many drivers would ride the crown, and straddle both lanes. If someone wanted to pass, then the car would move to the right lane. As long as the driver is courteous enough to move over, it sure beats having to steer into the crown on a long trip.

Ahh the Dodge Stealth. What an odd car, but we lusted over some of those back in high school. There were some pretty ballsy versions of those things available and they were pretty impressive for the early 90's. I think they were some weird collaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi. Same for all those Eagle Talons and stuff......weird times for Chrysler when you think about it.

Yeah, I've left plenty of shops with a sideways steering wheel before. I've also found a few 21mm sockets still attached to the camber adjustment bolts as well back in the day. One time not that long ago, the local shop in town sent me out with a crooked steering wheel, and loose tie rod collars! I could turn them with my fingers. 😟 Good thing I checked when I got home! My wife commutes 60+ miles a day in that car.

Not to sound disrespectful, just honest: Are you going to realize your ROI on that rig? I mean, what do alignments go for these days? And really, if you say it will generate more front end work, by your own admission you're DOING the work and 'farming out' the alignments. On the other hand, if the yahoos down at the local alignment shop aren't exactly 'skilled' at their craft and your customers blame YOU because their tires wore out after YOU fixed their front ends, then I guess 'brand preservation' makes the investment worthwhile! LoL

@@TheMinnow101 - Alot of people don't understand what Northeastern roads do to vehicles. There is ALWAYS a steady stream of vehicles needing ball joints, tie-rod ends, etc.. It's your bread-n-butter up here. I don't have a 10th the volume Eric has, yet I do front end work nearly every other day! I think his ROI will be just fine as well.

WOW.... that looks like an incredible machine. The hand scanner and the very intuitive display sure makes it easy to use, and the scanner heads following up and down with the hoist is really neat. My Brother-in-Law had an older Alignment Machine that used a pen scanner to scan bar codes in a book, and he got so frustrated because he said "Hey Look" as he scanned a 2005 GMC 1500 Pickup.... and the machine programmed a 2010 Toyota Camry or something. Stupid machine..... blast! I went over and said.... do you always read right to left? Try scanning the way you read.... Left to Right... OH MY... IT WORKED. That new machine seems like it is VERY user friendly, and prints a Colour (Canada eh) Before/After Report AND a Sandwich when done. Too Bad.... I did NOT see the optional "Well Done" Soft Ice Cream Dispenser installed. Sure would be an incentive to "get her right" on a hot sweaty day. Very impressive machine and a fun video to see what is involved in a good alignment job. Although most of the viewers will never have a machine like that of our own..... we will have a MUCH BETTER idea of what should be expected and involved in a good alignment. Great Video as always... and say Hi to Vanessa and the rest of your crew. Thanks Eric.

In '71 customer had us align WIFE'S car. R F tire worn on edge. Caster out slightly, so we adjusted it and put on 2 front tires . Came back after 5000 mile trip. R F tire worn on edge. Checked alignment, it was ok. Turns out wife did not drive at all. Did not know how to drive. WIFE'S car was only used when wife and husband went some where together. Wife was rather a large lady. Solution: We aligned the car with 2 of our guys in R F seat as close together as possible and against the door, put 1 new tire on R F. PROBLEM SOLVED !!! MORAL OF THE STORY : Some times you got to get the rest of the story. He told us the reason she did not know how to drive was because she could not fit behind the steering wheel.

Worked with it for 5 years about 15 (to 20) years ago... when I still remebered. Even then with lazer beems and what not. For knowledge you can inform about; If adjustable and in need you have to adjust rear first, camber not that common OEM so to speak but if possible adjust before toe because camber will effect even toe quite much, most modern machines don't need to get steering wheel locked = you set it straight and it will keep that setting. In rust belt you will often have to heat to breake something loose, adjustment, and as you keep on saying we talk ° so.. if heated it have to be cooled down again and have some thoughts about material strength etc. with heat threatment. Do it right the first time, worthless to do it twice for the same money =/ Last but not least, fix ALL play before or the adjustment will be useless. Test about 2000-3000 cars a year (50k-70k total) and many, many, many mechanics and workshops have no soul..as you know. Regards =)

I like that alignment machine !!! Nice !!! A big digital display to look at sure is easy on the eyes. Clamps to the tires is nice too !!! The wife has scratches all over her nice aluminum rims from them rim "" edge "" clamps !!!!! Not a fan of them, or the chalk line on the center of the tire and a tape measure, followed by whacking with a BFH to get it to adjust !!! I sure learned something today watching you work - Mrs. O. makes one hell of a nice BIG sandwich !!!!!! She takes care of you very well !!!!! And I can see why you put in a full service kitchen in the office - with venison dinners, pork chops, slabs of bacon along with a heart healthy salad, all that money $$$ saved on lunch at the town diner !!!!!! SMA is truly a "Work of Art" fine tuned business !!!!!!!! I will now be looking forward to every alignment video you do (No, not for Mrs. O.'s sandwiches), but to learn more about caster, camber, toe in, toe out, and why the tires squeal when you make a slight turn in the parking lot !!!! Wonderful informative video of your superb work, Eric. A job well done !!!!! And I did get pretty hungry when I saw that amazing egg salad sandwich - WOW !!!!!

Really love your videos Eric, I've done alignments daily for nearly 5 years and its always interesting; I would STRONGLY suggest a wrench extender, as knocking some of those jam nuts loose requires some serious leverage, not to mention when the nut seizes to the tie rod spindle. Standard length wrenches and crescent wrenches don't always do the trick. Stay awesome.

Nice alignment EricO. About 20 years ago I simply gave up trying to get an accurate computer alignment and started using home made tools and chalk lines in my garage, Before you scoff just think about how important set up is for a computer alignment. If the technician doesn't set the car up accurately or the specs in the database are wrong he may think he did a wonderfully "all green" alignment and yet the car is much worse than before. Add the paid by the job not by the hour shop rate and shallow training and you get a 50% satisfaction rate. Performance tires are much more expensive than the alignment. And by the way, Mitsubishi 3000GT really is a boulevard poser car, not a sports car. It weighs TWO TONS and has front wheel drive for crying out loud!!!!

Yeah, I could do it...if'n I had a Hofmann Geoliner 678. Alignment machines are very cool. I just had one done on my 02 Sierra a few months back and the guy let me watch as he was trying to bring it all into spec. Fascinating. Thanks for this video!

"Whatever way you think it needs to move, go the opposite" Truer words never spoken! 😆 Because 90% of the time, you go the wrong way every time! Also, we have that same lift where I work. Tis a good lift. Yours looks a little nicer right now tho. 7 years of use in upstate NY hasn't been kind to it. Plus I use it for more than just alignments.

Cool beans👍👍Way back when I was in HS the Nissan dealership I worked at had a "computerized" Hunter rack. The wheel sensors were wired, clamped on the rims, and you had to go through a calibration procedure on each wheel. All the numbers you had to lookup in the FSM.

Do you ever use this for checking and playing with bump steer? I've been tweaking that for fifty years, it makes a huge difference when you're really hammering a car on a lousy, undulating road. All production Vipers were checked for that and tweaked on the assembly line. I would kill for a day with that machine.... Color me jealous!

JUST INSTALLED AFTERMARKET CAM BOLTS "front upper strut eccentric bolts" ON A 1998 NISSAN ALTIMA, no rust! I love California. Camber was out 1.2 degrees left side and 1.6 right side. Now it's perfect! Great timing for me. Thank you for your time and a great video! Jason from San Jose California.

Eric O. Is it possible to adjust wheel alignment on a side by side atv such as Polaris RzR using this alignment system? There are provisions on the suspension, but not sure if I can take it an alignment shop like your to get it adjusted. BTW great vijeo 👍👍🔥🇺🇸👌

First I want to say I'm not try to criticize or tell you how to do an wheel alignment. It looks great! However I find it interesting and used to work with it for almost a decade, and just airing my humble thoughts =). I use to give right front just a hair more negative camber (around -0,10 degrees) than the left side to compensate for the road leaning from the center outwards to make rainwater run off, so you don't need to "counter steer" and the feel that your steering wheel is off center to the left. In this particular case where the camber on the left side is maxed out, I'd probably have put right side around -0,25 and a positive toe on +0,2 individual to compensate to not wear down the tires on the inner sides. Toys, toys, toys. Awesome when you can tell your wife you need them for work. Anyway. Buddy! What's the chance you get a microphone to wear so we can hear you over all the background noise? There's another auto guy I watch and the same thing. Everything is cranking and you hear a faint voice. He and his buddies wear earplugs because how loud it is then turn to the camera and try to talk over the 1000 HP they're tuning. Caught myself the other day as my kid walked in the front door and says "Hey dad" and I reply "Hey girl".

Sweet rack, (no pun intended and not a sponsor), and a-liner setup. I learned first on an old Rotary Laser alignment setup. Crude and dirty but the local PD never complained after I was done and drove away! And yes... I did test drive the cars on a back street with lights and sirens cranked to 11...! Thanks for the vids sir and family!!!

Nice to see a good alignment! Have 2 Kia Rondos, 08 & 11 and everyone says they can do a 4 wheel alignment but rarely can they because the back is attached to the fuel tank which they find challenging. A shop recently did my 2011 and messed the whole thing up. Torched everything even though they were new, lubricated parts and now they're all rusting. Tried to sell me new parts, that were new. They couldn't adjust their way out of a wet paper bag. Scrubbed my rear tires in less then 1000kms and the steering wheel is off by at least an inch to the right within 2 weeks. Just incompetent. When I called to get them to readjust, they said they needed another $100 to fix their $200 alignment mess. I eventually corrected things to a better alignment myself. I tell everyone they are incompetent, especially after I gave them the chance to make it right. So frustrating really.

Most vehicles back in the day just had a solid live axle in the real and you adjusted the front (the rear wasn't adjustable) and you adjusted the Ackermann Articulated linkage steering for toe. Most all of your trucks that have rear-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive based 4-wheel-drive are still made that way. Even on that fancy-dancey machine Eric has you can still take a vehicle with a rear that isn't adjustable and do the same thing. Now, however, most cars are front-wheel-drive and have independent-rear-suspension that must be aligned to the thrust angle (imaginary straight line down the middle of the car) and that is where the machine he has shines because it can compare all 4 wheels and their positions. Great video!

I have aligned with carpenter square ,string and tape measure. And it's been a good job. Of course these where early 70s or older. It would never even be close on anything newer. With all the adjustments I wouldn't even know where to begin. This is why I really do not care for anything new. They have given them so many adjustments like your driving some kind of race car.

Excellent four-wheel alignment. Thank you very much. But I am always wondering . . . If the alignment changes just my sitting in the car, would it be possible to put some weights on or near the front of the driver’s seat before doing the alignment? Or does the alignment stay green when a driver is in the car?

Always use the rim clamps if you want a TRUE wheel alignment. If by any chance the tires are worn unevenly you'll have an aligned car sure, but it will be based on the tire discrepancies which might end up amplifying any underlying issues with tracking. At least with rim clamps you can from the get go diagnose problems caused by tires. And then proceed to, if possible, correct those issues - rotating tires, rotating tires on rims, etc, or simply replacing tires.

Glad you tried to even out the camber on both sides of the front. If you had zero camber on one side and a small amount of camber on the other....even though both sides were well within spec...the car would have a tendency to pull to one side, even if the toe is perfect. A tire that has camber will try to 'turn'. That tendency to turn must be balanced by having the same (or nearly the same) camber on both sides of the car. That way they will offset each other. Eric probably knows this, but many do not. Mmmmmmmmm....at 20:20....an egg sandwich! My favorite!

What would the typical cost for an alignment such as this cost? I sat many times in a Indy car while they did this (many years ago) as I weighed about what the driver did. Thanks for the video. So the correct order is Castor, Camber, Toe????

When I get my work trucks aligned, we make sure the truck has the normal load, other wise the alignment goes off when we load'em up. Toe mainly, we'll get inside tire wear. We have to align our route trucks every other tire rotation because CA roads suck. Nice machine, super fancy.
