I was never a big Hochstetter fan, but this episode of Howard Caine impressed me with his acting 'chops' within the confines of a comedy-The apalled look of just blowing up get away car at 0:57, the look on Caine's face of dread when Klink hands over the phone to him, and his calm initial responce to Himler at 2:15, and then redemption as he is congradulated by Himler at 2:18. After Burkhalter role I elevate Caine in his role savy..."Baahhh!!"

Despite the character of Hochstetter being an utterly despicable Gestapo thug, Howard Caine played him beautifully. In those moments when it looks like he's screwed up big, like in this clip, he manages to portray the guy's dilemma so well that you almost feel sorry for him.

Yeah that takes real talent and real life innate likability to be able to portray characters who are unsavory or not supposed to be likable like Hochstetter, Burkhalter, Klink, Schultz or Archie Bunker, George Jefferson, Dan Fielding etc. yet we can't help but love them because the actors make them funny and human.

@@bobmalack481 bit of a schlep for me at the moment as I'm in the midwest. Also quarantine is a thing. That being said, why does it bother you when a person is held accountable for what is said? You seem to have a problem with political correctness, fine, but why? Why does it bother you that people are encouraged not to use slurs, why does it bother you that people are encouraged to consider what they say and to be mindful about others? No one is getting dragged off to camps or arrested for racist or sexist rhetoric. Not to mention that you say that nationalism and nazism are different, yes that's true but nationalism is still problematic at best. It claims primacy of nation regardless of reality and encourages an uncritical praising of the nation and its actions. As for cancel culture, boycotts have existed for years and the right used it for years to attack anything critical of their religious views or that gave a positive example of gays.

Hochstetter is one of my favorite characters, he's so emotive and usually so frustrated. Even though he's evil (unless he's secretly Nimrod, which I still think is the best theory), it's fun to see him bounce between extreme emotions and go from contrite to boastful. And of course Klink deflates so well. Good simple character work that is exactly what the scene needed.

Incorrect rank insignia on Hochstetter. He's wearing the collar patch insignia of an SS-Standartenführer ( Colonel ) furthermore only ranks below Standartenführer wore the SS runes on the other collar patch ( Obersturmbannführer and below). Also the SS did not address Superior officers as "Herr" as in the other branches did in the Wehrmacht. Only their rank as in for example Sturmbannführer ( Major) Hochstetter.

Only in the 1960's could you have a comedy in a German POW camp with an SS Officer as the comedic straight-man ruminating about his lost career in the NAZI Party...

The funniest episode was when Klink killed Hogan and stuffed him in the position of a German salute while wearing an SS uniform. Then Klink nailed his feet to his front porch for the other prisoners to see whenever they came outside.

Major Hochstetter's Mercedes-Benz W142 (Typ 320) seen in this episode used standard petrol, not diesel. Actually, very few of the smaller German military vehicles of the time (staff cars, light armored cars, reconnaissance vehicles, utility vehicles (jeep-like VW Kübelwagen), etc) used diesel engines. Gasoline was easier and cheaper to produce.

Wouldn’t want to think Hogan’s Heroes was somehow inaccurately portraying WWII or Nazi prisoner of war camps. ;-)

@Perryinjax Studios It was a TV show. Bing Crosby used what was available to him. Most all the vehicles used in Hogan's Heros were owned directly by him or by his studio. Bing owned several Mercedes himself, and was quite an avid collector of Mercedes and Rolls Royces he insisted everything used in the show actually ran and drove. That Phantom was used in several episodes. And it was not out of the realm of possibility either as the Nazi's confiscated many private vehicles in Western Europe for their own use. So it is not too far out there to have a German general using a confiscated Rolls as their staff car.

Gasoline doesn't do this either. It's purely poetic license.

Hochstetter is over zealous in his position, as is most Gestapo personnel, but give him credit for admitting his 'failure' and resignation to Riechs fuhrer before being rewarded.
