Every aspect of my golf swing improved the moment I did this tip. Ben Hogan always did this before swinging because it made the golf swing so much easier. He was one of the best ball strikers of all time. One of the reasons why he hit it so well was because he eliminated variables in his swing. Many golfers are surprised at how much better they hit the ball when they start doing this. It's very simple too - all you need to do is squeeze your arms together before swinging. The golf swing will be taken care of.

I found Tom Saguto in mid ‘22 and signed up as a member for a small stipend of a couple hundred a year. I recorded about 80 rounds annually in the USGA GHIN system, averaged 84.5 in ‘22 and my handicap ranged from 10 to 13. In ‘23 I’ve recorded almost 100 rounds to date, my average dropped to 81.0 and handicap now sits at 6.8. I’ve played golf as well as other sports for over 45 years and was searching for a simpler, repeatable swing and one that belies the march of Father Time. Tom focuses on ten or so absolute musts that are mostly preset or easily practiced allowing me to essentially bake them in to my swing. Obviously problems creep in but with reminders such as this video I can more easily identify and treat them during a round of golf. Moreover, I continuously catch little jewels from Tom that I’ve never addressed and wouldn’t have without taking 5 minutes watching refresher videos such as this one. It’s eerie that Tom knows the small pitfalls and must dos of all these swing elements much better than any private lesson ever offered me. If one really wants to improve ball striking this program is an absolute must but like anything else that’s any good requires practice and discipline. I’ll take that any day over endless patience and faith which at age 65 is in short supply lol.

Hands down one of the best videos on KZbin right now! I actually figured this out a few months ago and it changed my game and then today I come across your video today talking about it. Folks, if you can get this down, this is what people talk about when they want to have an”effortless” swing! I promise! For me, I figured this out practicing PITCH shots! I was hitting some really crispy pitch shots and was trying to figure out why can’t I do the same in my full swing. So I sat there on the range trying to recreate the same pitch shot feel (keeping the V/elbows together) in my full swing and I did! So now before a round or practice, I hit 20-25 pitch shots before I even hit a full swing and usually before a round, I only hit 5-10 full swings and then I’m off! Listen, it works! @SagutoGolf is really giving you all a helluva SECRET right now! Listen to him!

Mr. Hogan said, "the secret is in the dirt", and it's quite apparent that his swing keys have been as clear as mud for the vast majority of the golfing world ever since... 😆 Seriously, there is a treasure chest of great information in Mr. Hogan's "Five Lessons" book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Excellent video Tom on breaking down Hogan's elbow recommendation! I have been working on this elbow principle and I really like the way it feels. When using this principle, it's as though the arms and the body are working together! I've always liked the role of the shoulders in the swing and by adding this variable, it's "Krispy Chicken" time! Well Done Tom! I always enjoy your input!

I’ve had Hogan’s book “5 Lessons” for years now and go back to review it frequently. When I read through it I have a yellow highlighter in hand and the book is filled with my notes. I’m a subscriber to Tom’s online school and my ball striking has never before been at this level. Even mishits (yes, it happens, it’s golf) are on my target line and hitting targets more often than not makes the game way more fun. Tom keeps things simple which is what works best for me. Just set it and swing. Very repetitive results. As always thanks for the help, Tom. I’m playing to an 8 these days. Never thought I’d ever see that! And I want to get that handicap even lower. I see the connecting of “wringing the towel” to dial in a grip and keeping those elbows in. Then if I make sure to make a full turn through with speed the compression is so much better! Need to watch out for hooks though
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 19 күн бұрын
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Dan; excellent job incorporating it into your swing! There are just too many potential variables and unknowns for me to make an accurate diagnosis regarding hooking tendencies. For example, if your path was previously too steep and you were making compensations to prevent the ball from slicing off the planet - perhaps a very strong grip or setting up with a closed face - then those compensations could certainly result in a hook if you have successfully corrected your path. Other things to consider are your ball position is too far forward, your hands are too far back, your weight is not forward enough at impact, more..... While there are certainly videos on my channel that address these various issues, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks so much for sharing your ball striking improvement and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom

I sincerely appreciate that, Nick, and I am very glad to know that you are benefiting from my instruction content and enjoying my teaching style!! If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style of my online school that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews As for making your swing "bulletproof", that's where the school comes in. Hi Tom great video as usual. But as you empathize with more focus on the right (magic) trail elbow and less on the lead elbow. This way one has preset their trail elbow to magically return to the exact same spot during their dynamic swinging of their club with their arms and shoulders. Your teaching of the golf swing is not just KFC good; but arms and shoulders above the rest. Cheers🥂👍😊

@vinnym5095 - As you can probably tell by now, my instruction is not a compilation of band-aid fixes - they are all elements of the comprehensive swing system that I teach. Now, could someone deploy one of my tips to field dress a swing wound? Absolutely. However, it will ultimately serve them far better - and will stand the test of time and pressure - if they adopt and commit to the system in its entirety, and that is precisely what the online school does in a structured and sequential learning environment. I had phased out private lessons (both in-person and virtual) awhile back so I could dedicate more time to my online school. While this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. Cheers! Tom

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Ай бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Lewis! Part of that lead elbow thing is a matter of how our arms hang naturally from our shoulders. In other words, the arm may be oriented more inward or outward to a certain degree - we're all different. Beyond that, to some extent it's a matter of personal preference and what works best for you. The key here - and what Mr. Hogan was really getting at - is that we want to create a measure of connectivity and structure at address that we can then carry through the entirety of the swing. So while I am less concerned about lead elbow orientation, the tucked trail elbow is a must in my book. While there are certainly other videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks, Tom

Thanks - I'm glad you're enjoying my content! The key is that we need to retain the structure created at address. A major component of that is keeping the elbows a consistent distance from each other throughout the motion. So if you are hindered from getting them closer together, you can still work on not letting them get any further apart while you swing. Make sense? One good drill for preserving structure is to place a tee in each armpit and try to keep both tees from falling out for the entirety of your swing. Our setup and connections should always be our first checkpoints if we sense that we're starting to leak some oil. Hi. Did you move the weight to the right foot ? Looks like your weight stays at the left side from the beginning.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Ай бұрын
Your observation is spot on! The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

@SagutoGolf 6 ай бұрын
I can certainly understand the need to initially feel some degree of what I would call "exaggerated structure" if a golfer has not previously experienced this level of connection, but as it becomes ingrained any tension should be reduced to nil. I want you to have the feeling of "soft arms" so that the arms and wrists can simply respond to the big muscles and the weight of the club. Think in terms of an elephant turning its head back and forth and its trunk freely swinging up, down, and up again without any contrived manipulation. Secure your connections, execute the motion with the big muscles, and let the arms/hands/club go along for the ride. This is the prescription for consistent and effortless ball striking bliss. @@SagutoGolf Wow! I have used the elephant's trunk analogy myself. If you look at a swing machine, there aren't two "arms" attached to the club. There is just one. By squeezing the elbows together, we're attempting to make one "elephant's trunk" with our arms. When I do it correctly, I can feel my right elbow pointing to the ground at the top of my backswing and I can easily make that "skipping a stone" move on the downswing. POW!

I suggest you set up a second camera behind your swing and split the screen. Thanks.

Is this swing applicable for driver too
@SagutoGolf

Yes - this swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHbpJaDrrNmrJo Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag. I guess using a smart ball between the forearms would guarantee keeping the elbows close together

Sure. I don't see where there would be an issue with that.

Doesn’t forcing your elbows together make you tense which has always been considered a killer to the golf swing?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 ай бұрын
While there are certainly other videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom
