Tom: This is a mandatory video for beginners. Everything starts at the set up. You clarified a lot of your principles that I've studied over the last year. 1. Weight on front. I was leaning everything to left, including trunk. Thanks for pointing out, just the hips. 2. Forward trunk tilt to get a relationship with ball. Measured your trunk flexion at 35 degrees. 3. Pointing out important nuances of grip. This video is a keeper and good reference for anyone who plays golf. Well done. Thanks for keeping it simple.

Tom, you're the greatest. No question. Still, and yet, the most important aspect of the golf swing --and this just might be me-- is the spine angle in relation to the length of the club. Your relationship to the ball. This is No. 1. Absolutely paramount. Dipping up or down, left or right will destruct the contact point.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
This is why when folks ask me if it is the same swing with every club, my response is that it essentially is with the exception of some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHbpJaDrrNmrJo It is also why the simple swing key of pointing the lead shoulder at the ball in the backswing does not discriminate from one club to the next and is thus so effective through the bag. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the structured learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks - I sincerely appreciate your kind words and support!! Excellent advise Tom! I do have a neutral grip and a Y set up with my hands on the inside of the left thigh. Now, after watching this video, I will be sure to use a lower case y instead of an upper case Y. As a senior, I have narrowed my stance, but now I may have to widen it a bit! I also like the "spine/ball" relationship and weight forward. Well Done Tom!
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Thanks John! Yes - get that lower case "y" setup, and with regard to your stance make sure that _both_ feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. Keep up the great work! Tom

I always utilise my 30 minute lunch break with a slice of 'Tom' now. I was sceptical of weight forward, I was a tweaker, worst sin in golf. I played the Tom way yesterday and shot 83 (18hc), 7 shots better than my recent best scores. Weight forward, better strikes, better scores, less trees, way more fun! Off to the range tonight as I was a liy livered 3 wood off every tee yesterday. Want to trust this method for the driver, I want to be able to use the big dog! So glad I checked this beauty of a vlog tho, I think I have been leaning too much, going to concentrate on the hip nudge! Regardless Tom has reignited my love of golf. Tweaks gone for good, trust in hitting the same spot every time most definitely in. Once I have nailed the driver set up, maybe, just maybe I might dip into the 70's once more!! The weight forward on my driver is really hard for me to get used to but I'm definitely gonna work on it. Your swing rotation video a few weeks ago have already helped me. Next time on range ill bring all of this into practice. Thank you!!
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I understand how that can be a difficult concept to grasp at first. However, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHbpJaDrrNmrJo Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft of the driver is considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag. My pleasure - I'm glad to know that this video resonated with you! My pleasure - I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes - far more often than not when things start going awry it's related to something being amiss in our setup, yet we invariably start diving down rabbit holes chasing after a swing flaw that may not have even existed. And from there what an absolute mess we can make of things! We would do well to pay attention to how careful and diligent Tour pros are with regard to setting up to the ball. There's plenty of learning to be extracted from that observation. Nail the setup and we are poised to achieve a desirable result. Fail the setup and all bets are off... Tom

Everything in this video has helped me with one exception … with driver, I’ve found that it is more helpful to have the club head slightly ahead of the hands at set-up, mimicking the upward strike position at impact. Another teach has talked about this. If the hands are slightly ahead of the club head with driver, it is very hard not to fade the ball.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Actually, Weston, having the hands slightly ahead of the clubhead at address is supportive of an in-to-out path and thereby promotes a push-draw ball flight. I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder/armpit), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or some of those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and contrived efforts to do have caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. And here's a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/ Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA

@@SagutoGolf all makes sense, but as an older golfer (67) in good shape but with less flexibility, it is very hard to come from the inside consistently with the driver. When I set up as you describe I tend to hit a low ball with the occasional spray right when I come in too steep. If I set up with the club head ahead of my hands (just a little), I get much better ball flight and more consistency

This is awesome. I am hitting lower irons well. Still working on 5 & 6. Driver is currently most inconsistent. I either hit it well or it pops up as the ball hits the very very top of the face.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) With regard to the driver, many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. @SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I appreciate that, Jeff! How to initiate the downswing is a loaded question because it is so dependent on individual tendencies that I cannot give a generalized answer. If I tell you that it's a lateral hip slide but your downswing already naturally has sufficient forward force, then you'll hit pushes and/or hooks all day long, and if I tell you to rotate your hips but you are already naturally applying enough outward force, then your destination is pull/slice city! I could also say the shoulders, or dropping the hands, or getting the lead arm off the chest, or rolling your trail foot targetward, or increasing pressure into the lead leg, etc. Whew! You get what I'm saying, right?.... My pleasure, Michele! My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. (Although as long as my setup is good and I've pre-established the necessary connections, I can trust that no matter my "trigger du jour", it's going to get me moving properly into the downswing.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. That is one reason why the comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform of my online school is so effective, and as such I strongly recommend it to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my KZbin content. great stuff again Tom, seems I need midsize grips at just over 8 inch from crease to tip. One question what affect does changing grip size have? As in with a smaller grip is their common faults or purely a comfort thing for the golfer?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed this setup/grip lesson! My best suggestion is to visit a golf shop that stocks a variety of grips and see what feels best to you. So many golfers make various changes to how they hold the club without considering that perhaps the grips on their clubs are not properly sized for their hands. Think about it - who came up with the "standard" grip size, anyway? How small were their hands, and how many golfers over the years have not come close to enjoying their full potential as a result of trying to hold a toothpick in their mitts?? In other words, having properly sized grips is critically important as they are our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. Tom- really helpful info. Question for you in regards to tilt- should you be tilting your head down with your driver or standing up more straight?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I appreciate that, Michael! These setup keys apply to all clubs and should answer your question with regard to the driver: At address we should feel evenly balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting our knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of our shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing our butt out to incline the hips and chest - _and thus the head_ - so that a relationship with the ball is established. The arms hang down naturally from the shoulders with all clubs except the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft. We address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the structured learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA

I love your videos! One minor question I had is that I know in the iron swing you have some lateral movement with your hips, is that still the same with a driver or are you delaying the hip lateral movement.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I appreciate that! It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHbpJaDrrNmrJo The lateral targetward action of the hips applies to every club in the bag acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great ball striker. Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place. This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. While there is certainly additional content on my channel that addresses this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA

All golfers - even the best in the world - are constantly fiddling and tweaking, and I'm certainly not immune to that! 😎 Having said that, for the most part I really think that it is my teaching style and delivery that has evolved over the years. Additionally, I strive to do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my KZbin content. Good video once again Tom. It can't be understated how important having the correct grip and set up is. Quick question, In your downswing, do you let the arms and club drop into the slot and then turn and fire your hips? Or do you just rotate with your shoulders and then fire the hips at the end? Its looks like you're doing the latter. It's something that im in two minds with in my golf swing atm. Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed it! The "drop it in the slot" move you are referring to is a feature of a two-plane type of motion that has the golfer taking the club straight back off the ball and then lifting it, thereby setting the arms on a different plane than the shoulders. This necessitates an active shallowing move in order to get the club on a good downswing path. What I teach is a one-plane motion in which the club takes essentially the same path back and through, tracing the natural geometry of the inclined swing circle preestablished at address. In other words, we just put the club in the "slot" from the beginning, thereby presetting the ideal downswing path before it even happens. It's a very centered, powerful, body-friendly, low-maintenance motion. Here's a recent video related to this topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIGbkmmIqtqXras As for the hips, I prefer to simply allow them to react to a shoulder-driven motion as discussed in last week's episode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fV6mlXl5hMeYnpY And while I certainly have other lesson videos that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks! I have a "strong grip" which I incorporated into getting rid of my slice. I'll try neutral with a lower case y to see how that effects power. With a strong grip I barely have to do anything to hit 280-310. I think the neutral grip is more repeatable and eliminates variables at the cost of a few yards. I'll try both. I really like the "feel" of the left wrist breaking just a bit at the top.
@SagutoGolf4 ай бұрын
Deterring you from your desired grip is not the point here. A strong grip - when deployed as an anti-slice band-aid - is precisely that: a patch for a deficiency or flaw somewhere upstream in the swing motion that the teacher or golfer can't or won't fix. If, on the other hand - so to speak 😎 - it is simply a matter of personal preference, then we should endeavor to remain keenly aware of our ball flight as it is quite adept at telling us if our grip is starting to leak too much to the strong side. To be clear, one can certainly play good golf with a strong grip, and there have been plenty of examples of that. However, anything to either side of neutral disrupts the natural geometry of the swing that was preestablished at address and thus necessitates some measure of compensatory actions in order to achieve consistently crispy impact and a desirable shot shape. Anyway, yes - give it a try, and whatever works best for you is best for you! That may have the best explanation about grip strength I have ever seen, however when I grip that hard it feels "tense" like my whole body feels tense even though I am not death-gripping per se. At some point does it start to feel "effortless"?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I appreciate that and I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you! If you have grown accustomed to a "baby bird" level of grip pressure, then as explained this may feel a bit tight or tense at first. We need to build that critical arm structure so that the big muscles can take control of the swing from start to finish. This is how we create our consistent, powerful ball striking "machine". In actuality, a secure grip - and not a "death grip" - is what we are after so that the hands, wrists, and arms can simply react to the motion.. Combine that with maintaining our upper arm connection points and we can then hit the autopilot button and let the machine do its thing! Some folks may think that the S/T swing is not a true swing. But i beg to differ, has helped me. When I have a bad shot, I know what I did wrong as opposed to not knowing what to do earlier in my game!!
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
That is the difference between a robust swing *_SYSTEM_* and a swing that is built on a compilation of band-aids, tweaks, and compensations, Berry! Sadly, Stack and Tilt was relentlessly attacked by the "mainstream" of failed "instruction" whose erroneous concepts were threatened by the truth, and their nefarious efforts successfully - albeit temporarily - attached an undeserving "stigma" to the S&T name among those who chose not to do their own research. The bottom line is this: The body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt methodology is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's greatest ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. We can watch any Tour event on TV and we'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within that realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Thanks for your support and validation, and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom

Great video. When taking the grip, let’s say neutral, and then placing the hands slightly forward into ‘y’ the face will open slightly. So do you take the left hand grip with the hand already set forward to align the face?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it! The face is open a degree or two to the target line at address. Consider that the zero-point of the swing is even with the lead shoulder/armpit from a face-on view. The face would be square to the target there, but since the ball position is behind that spot, without any contrived manipulations this causes the face to be ever so slightly open to the target line. This relationship - face open to the target and closed to the in-to-out downswing path - is how we achieve the stock push-draw ball flight of this swing system. Hi Tom. Are you actively turning your hips in the downswing or is it a result of the shoulder turn? Thanks 🙏 for your videos!
@SagutoGolf4 ай бұрын
I'm simply allowing the lower body to be responsive to the shoulder-driven motion, Jeff, though this really comes down to individual tendencies. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. There are quite a few different possibilities for that knee when shifting your hip a smidge. Thanks a ton, and please continue with what you’ve been doing. You’re a godsend in a world of KZbin golf nonsense..
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! If we take our setup properly then the lead knee really isn't doing much until we begin the swing motion. Here are some keys in this regard: We should feel evenly balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting our knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of our shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing our butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. Both feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. Once the swing is initiated, the lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientation that we preset at address. The flexing/straightening occurs gradually and in response to the increasing forward weight load and the centered tilting, turning, and extending components of the motion. They are not contrived actions unto themselves. We're simply allowing them to be reactive, thereby freeing up the hips and shoulders to execute an unrestricted turn.

Which grip is best for small hands???
@SagutoGolf4 ай бұрын
Hi Karen, I would first consider grip size. My best suggestion is to visit a golf shop that stocks a variety of grips and see what feels best to you. So many golfers make various changes to how they hold the club without considering that perhaps the grips on their clubs are not properly sized for their hands. Having properly sized grips is critically important as they are our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. Once you have resolved things on the equipment side, then you can experiment with different grip styles to see what performs best for you. To this end, my main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure in the fingers throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. I hope that helps! Tom Saguto, PGA PS: By the way, would you like to learn some key aspects of the body-friendly, powerful, low-maintenance swing system I teach in a more structured manner? Tom is weight forward just another way of saying hip bump?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
In our setup we address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward - generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs - while retaining the stacked relationship. From there we gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion. While there are certainly plenty of videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

Hey Tom, with your stance being neutral and your grip being neutral, how is it that you hit baby draws? I always thought to draw the ball, you need a slightly closed stance and a stronger grip to do that??
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Those are common misconceptions, Daniel. The answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. In my setup the face is open a degree or two to the target line depending on the club. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the structured learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA

I set my weight forward and my swing is shallow but i end up swinging across the ball as I cant seem to get the hips through. I have tried pushing the hips through first like traditional S&T, I am trying what you have said recently of swinging with the shoulders first but i just end up swivelling and then everything becomes a fade at best or a horrible pull or slice at worst. That drawing of the grip is from "Ben Hogan's Five Lessons - Modern Fundamentals of Golf" by Ben Hogan. It's one of the best books out there to read about what constitutes a good golf swing and is written well with great illustrations. You'll definitely learn something from it.

Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Thanks for your message! Tom Saguto, PGA

@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Yes - When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to with a simple shoulder-driven motion, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. . Here are some lesson videos specific to this topic: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6SZm4adgtt9o68 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnOXeqeIaMyofbc - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2a7ipqBpNWHmJY And while there are certainly other videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for sharing your downswing feel and keep up the great work! Tom, I have a question and hopefully I can make it understandable. When someone sets up to the ball with an iron and takes a few practice swings, usually the club just brushes the ground, but there sure isn't a divot taken. Then, when the ball is actually hit, there is a nice divot taken(assuming it was done correctly). My question is, what changes in the actual hit swing, compared to the practice swings to get the divot? Bend over more? That's one of my problems. I set up to the ball and take a few practice swings just brushing the ground. Then my actual hit swing is the same and I don't take a divot. I'm not sure what adjustment is made for the hit swing in order to lower the club and take the divot.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
Hi Terry, It's an interesting question, and I really think the answer comes down to subconscious intuitiveness. Good players are not intentionally trying to take chunks out of the grass; the brain knows that and is therefore simply confirming a consistent low point (the "brush point"). When a ball gets in the way the intent is to hit the ball first with a descending blow, the degree of which is determined by club selection and ball position. When this is properly executed the turf is then going to be struck after the ball. Now, if your contact is thin consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. I have a couple of potential training aid suggestions for you: 1) The Divot Board can really step up the effectiveness and efficiency of your practice sessions, helping you to groove a consistent low point and crispy impact (with or without a ball). @@SagutoGolf Thanks for your reply Tom. One of your comments is sort of relevant to my question. The divot board. I have the divot board and I am also a member of you on-line training. Have learned a ton in a short amount of time, almost too mush to be honest. The divot board is not ground level when hitting off it. It's above your feet maybe 3/4 to 1 inch. I use the divot board and get my swing where it needs to be, as far as the low point. Then when I setup to the ball on natural grass, how do I compensate for the ball being an inch or so lower? I know the brain will adjust. But is there more to it? Do I bend over just a tick more to get the clubhead a little lower? I'm probably way over-thinking this. I do have problems taking a nice divot. I don't necessarily "thin" the ball, I just don't get as crisp contact I'd like to and I'm trying to figure out what adjustment to make.

In regards to the front knee on the takeaway or backswing, I noticed your left knee doesn't come in but points more to your left toes. Is there a feeling you have to produce that look? Thank you.
@theophilus51325 ай бұрын
You get that motion with the front knee by keeping the weight forward (rather than shifting to the trail side) and turning your hips and shoulders. Try it. In your setup set your weight 55% on the front side. Keep it there (without shifting to the trail side in your backswing) and turn your hips and shoulders. The knee will naturally do what you see in the video.
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
@209coach - @theophilus5132 offers some excellent detail in reply to your question. The lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientation that we preset at address. This outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power source, and it also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lower back, lead knee, and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process. Q: not much follow-through (on the irons)? Is that important?
@SagutoGolf5 ай бұрын
The finish of the drill swing confirms the following: 1) We retained the structure of our arms and shoulders that we created at setup, 2) We had forward shaft lean at impact for crispy compression, and 3) We did not flip or roll our hands through the zone. If you observe my iron swing at the 18:45 point of the video, you'll see my full finish position which is simply the result of a very connected, powerful, and body-friendly motion. Have a look at Tommy Fleetwood's finish, for example - he is one of the best ball strikers out there. And there are plenty of others on Tour whose follow-throughs are similar. There's no need for the shaft to whack you in the back, and for many in the amateur ranks that type of loose finish is an indicator of a loss of critical structure somewhere in the swing motion.
