Fun fact: Hogwarts wasn't shot with a real sense of geography until the third (and best) movie, in which the director decided to make a layout to connect everything. In the novels, it is explained that only Albus Dumbledore, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew knew that Remus Lupin was a werewolf (later Snape also came to know this), and Remus and the other 3 marauders went to Shrieking Shack every full moon to conceal Lupin's transformation into a wolf. So, Dumbledore planted the Whomping Willow to safeguard the tunnel leading to the Shrieking Shack, so no student dared go there (of course, aside from Snape), and Lupin's identity would be kept hidden. Hogwarts Legacy takes place roughly around 100 years before these events, so it was a great decision to not include the Whomping Willow in the game just for nostalgia's sake.
@LunnarisLP Жыл бұрын
exactly this, putting it in the game would have been stupidly wrong. I thought it was common knowledge is was planted because of lupin, because it was even adressed in the movies wasn't it?

The Whomping Willow has significant story purpose. It was planted when Remus Lupin arrived at school, so that he could use the place underneath it to hideout when he transformed into a werewolf and no other student would accidentally stumble upon him. It wasn't planted even when Molly and Arthur Weasley attended, and it's mentioned pretty explicitly in the story. Maybe perhaps they could have had some workaround to still keep it in the game, but still, the story checks out as to why it's not there.

I do have one issue with the game as I'm now 30 hours in: You spend almost no time IN Hogwarts. It really does feel like we could've had room for Quidditch if we'd sacrificed some of the collectibles strewn about the region. For instance, the Merlin Trials have no impact on game or story, they just exist TO exist, really. Yeah, there's technically a small story to kick it off, but there's no story after that. It doesn't affect anything, and that is just bad design. Overall still love the game, but feel like it could've focused more on the school.

That's really my only beef with the game as well. I would've loved to have the game feel slightly more towards a game like Persona, where I would have certain classes each day of the week to go to at set times, then either obey the rules at night and just go to sleep or risk sneaking out and around the castle with the prefects about. It annoyed me a bit that after the first mission where you get access to the prefect's living area, never again is there any consequences for Wandering around the castle at night.

There's also the additional fact that the devs took more notes from the books when making the castle plus sprinkling in some of their own design elements. This game's Hogwarts is more close to kind what the books tried to describe. A more 1:1 design of Movie Hogwarts would probably be the one from the Half-Blood Prince game, whos entire focus was to just recreate the castle as close to the movie design as perfectly as possible . With the movies you also had the issue that it had a lot of different directors working on it and good luck telling a director that he or she should keep in a decision a previous director made, cause to them it won't match up with their "idea" or "vision" fully, this was especially notable with the Goblet Of Fire movie where the director considered the previous directors as more of a competition that he needs to somehow one up, which caused that to be the worst Potter movie (well alongside the big fact the director also didn't fully read the book and kept complaining it was too big for him)

Lupin would go through a hole in the Willow’s roots every month and through a tunnel to transform into a werewolf in the Shack where he couldn’t hurt anyone. The Willow was so dangerous that it kept other people from entering the passage and encountering the werewolf. The game takes place in the late 1800s (approx. 100 years before Harry Potter timeline). I can't prove it 100%, but at least SOME areas indicate that they are indeed connected: The quest markers, when viewed from the outside on a broomstick, match up with where they should be on the inside; When using Revelio on a broomstick next to some doors that have locks on the inside, you see those locks on the other side of the door; Some interior areas have proper windows that you can see through, and at least those areas match up 100%. So, either they are VERY good at hiding it, or they really did stuff the interiors actually inside the interior and tried to match it as closely as possible.

Fun fact: They actually already did a digital recreation of Hogwarts in the games based on the 5th and 6th films. It was a big marketing thing at the time and from my memory, those were extremely accurate. But since HL takes place way before the movies, I remember seeing the devs mention that they took creative liberty. So that why it doesn't look 100% like what Hogwarts looks like in the movies.
@gabrielandy9272 Жыл бұрын
they have similar issues still because the movie layout changes and is not always teh same.
@VandergriftMoefies Жыл бұрын
@@gabrielandy9272 True, but it was closer to the films and especially is 1 on 1 for the 5th and 6th films' version of Hogwarts.

I also look at it as different depictions because the HL version is more accurate to the books. Though I do give credit to the PS2 games for making fully realized versions of the movie castle. But I always felt kinda underwhelmed when comparing the movie castle to the descriptions in the books

I actually Do know the layout of Hogwarts, purely because of a Minecraft server that built it, REALLY good map. And, honestly, this game's outside-of-Hogwarts is pretty similar to the Minecraft map..........ODD! Probably just used the same reference material though................................................or I just have a terrible memory. You know, even in the book I am pretty sure Hagrid's hut is near the Forbidden Forest...or, atleast that is what I imagined.

The Whomping Willow was moved after the second movie to hide the secret path to the Shack. To help hide Lupin's identity as Werewolf.

I think they had access to the model used in the film. The Hogwarts seen from the arrival on the lake in the first film is a practical miniature. I think according to behind the scenes on Goblet of fire was the first fully digital Hogwarts.

After some exploration of Hogwart, this is not the boathouse the students enter from, they enter the one that is under it, I can't really remember clearly but IIRC, when they arrive just afte the boat, they immidiately go trough clean stairs inside where Malfoy is taunting Ron, and it kinda match it with the way they arrive from that subterrain docking station, the page you collect there (the basement boathouse, not the outside one) clearly state that first year students arrives from there :).

I think they made it better for most parts in Hogwarts Legacy. Except for the inside of the Grand Staircase. Don't like that it's a round spiral stairs, and in the movies they're more straight and in a square. Which actually doesn't make sence if the stairs is round on the outside though :P
@SoraRaida Жыл бұрын
This has an easy explanation. It's just easier to code moving staircases that are fixed in places, but appeared while someone is close to them, instead of straight staircases that keep moving at time intervals. Also, people would complain a lot! Imagine having to wait for the staircase to stop while the place you're trying to go isn't that far, and you have to keep waiting and walking to multiple places
@LilOleTinyMe Жыл бұрын
@@SoraRaida eh. I would prefer the trouble. The moving stair cases feel iconic to me with amount of camera shots we get swooping in between them
@jmal Жыл бұрын
@@LilOleTinyMe They actually tried that in the _Order of the Phoenix_ and _Half-Blood Prince_ video games. The common complaint is that just because it's accurate to the movies it doesn't mean it's a good gameplay mechanic, as it ruins pacing and tends to glitch out, especially when it comes to NPCs.

The main reason that the castle is more geographically consistent from the third movie is that they stopped filming on location after the second film. The first two films were largely filmed in Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, and Durham Cathedral. They were originally going to film the Great hall scenes in Durham Castle but there was a scheduling problem. After the filmmakers allegedly fell out with the duchess of Northumberland, they decided it would be cheaper to film everything in a studio near London so the third film onwards don't have the real castles.

You kind of forget to mention the fact that both, Hagrid's Hut and the Forbidden Forest have moved in the movies. In the first 2 movies, Hagrid's Hut was right next to castle, basically next to the castle walls, before being moved further away from the castle. And same goes for the Forbidden Forest, which had its borders right next to the castle. In the game, they explained the situation with Hagrid's Hut, by having both huts. One right next to the castle and the one further away from the castle. So Hagrid basically just move into the other hut... As for the Forbidden Forest... Yea, that thing just moved again and is now even further away from the castle

I really love the game version, it´s like a perfect mix of the different movie versions with some own designs but still very true to how Hogwarts should be and it keeps the warm and homely feeling of the first films. I really love spending time there, it´s just so gourgeus.
