Why do I keep watching Marine Band reviews and testimonials? I own like two dozen of them. This is by far the best and most honest testimonial I've come across though.

I absolutely love the Marine Band! The 1896 Marine Band. I started on this Harmonica,and have tried other brands. For me it's still the best Harp there is. My favorite player's all used this instrument. Both Big, and Little Walter, Sonny Boy one and two. The list goes on. For me there is no substitute!

I played one of these on the radio in 1945 at 9 yrs old in Portland, OR. I am now 80 and still playing. I have fun with these but not a real good musician. I was self taught playing the cornet in contests at 12 yrs old while living in Vancouver, Washington.

They used nails in 1896 Marine Band they made for the Worlds Fair , so this is a " Vintage" model, but you knew that, that's for those who didn't. I think people like them because they're responsive to micro bends and scooping, anything else is too stiff.

Hi Adam.I started playing harp when I was 16 too.I am now 57 so we are around the same age.I am English so the Marine Band was known in England as the Echo Vamper.It was the same harp as the Marine band in all but name and box type.They always and still do have a different tone than the later plastic harps but of course we had the wood swelling scenario that used to cut lips.I have had hundreds of harmonicas throughout the years,some great,some not so great,and some complete crap but I will always maintain that the Marine Band/Echo Vamper, has the real blues tone that I searched for and found, in my youth.By the way I could actually play the tremolo harmonica quite well,before I discovered the harp.A little hohner job that I purchased from a shop in Chester back in about 1972 started me off.JimLiverpool.

There are guitarists and bassists out there who continue to use cheap instruments throughout their careers. Tom Morello is a guy who spent like $50 on his guitar and has had it for like 30 years. Victor Wooten and Regi Wooten (brothers) are a good example of contrast. Wooten plays A Fodera bass, which sell for about $10,000, whereas Regi plays $200 Squier guitars. There are harpist who play stock $40 1896 MBs, and there are harpists who play $400 custom harps.

Thank you for also Jamming those three tunes in this video as there some of my favorites that i listen to the most often and Ride my motorcycle too ... Been playing a few months, learning and adapting my own style of playing to your music, Jason Ricci's music and the older greats but you and Jason Ricci are the ones that got me started in playing and I thank you for that ! Please feel free to post some inspriational videos of perhaps some free style and off the wall playings as im sure the audience would really like to see you learn while playing like we do! you know kinda off the cuff playing and what not .... again thank you for all that youve done for the harmonica community and for myself .

Thanks for all your help Adam, your videos are fantastic. Recently (the last few years) the Marine Band harmonicas I purchase off of Amazon fail within a short time. Not sure what has changed as I have been playing them as a child as well. Here is what happens, after a short time on most of the blow notes nothing comes out, the reeds stick, I have contacted Hohner twice now and they say they have never heard of this problem and they will get back to me but they never have, so far. I will be playing along fine and then I hit a dead hole, I have to blow in and out a few times to get the reed "unstuck" but the harp never fully recovers after that? Have you ever heard of this problem? I have to buy them 4 at a time because of this problem.

I started playing about 4 years ago using MB's partly on your recommendation of harp but also because hundreds of blues greats can't be wrong. I tried others but prefer the MB. I've had a couple of duffers but I accept that's the way they are. They aren't Manji's after all. The last couple I've bought seem to have better varnish on the comb and stay in shape longer. What I don't like is the sharp edge to the plates which cut's my lips so I always sand the edge off.
@sonnyboywalter6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam. I usually play my harps in a rack with my guitar. I was watching a video before yours on the Suzuki Manji which is more expensive than the Marine band which I've been playing on and off for many years. I also use a few Lee Oskar which are nice in minor keys as they are more mellow. The thing is, if you're buying a few keys at a time to replace worn out ones it would be too much money for me to buy the Suzukis. What I'm saying in a long winded way, is you've convinced me to stick with Marine bands. Thanks again!

Can you tell me have you ever played any theme from western movies using Marine band and how has it sounded? And thanks for all videos on YT!

Hi Adam. I really enjoy your videos and have been learning from them for a little while. I have a Marine Band and I really like it, except for the two typical problems that I’ve noticed people talk about - that they are not very comfortable on the lips and that they swell and the comb teeth stick out. Wondering how you combat these two problems? The Marine Band is the only harp I’ve tried that I really like the tone of so that it motivates me to practice so I’m with you on this, just also really curious about how you deal with these two issues. Thanks xx

Gussow tbh I believe that the Marine band has good sound, is airtight and has a good feel to know right where you are with the notes. I'm a novice but I hate the plastic combs tbh. You get a good feel with the wood. It is rough enough to let you know where you are with the wood and sometimes I need to smooth down the brass plates caus they can be sharp but the combs are awesome and I know where I am in a 100th of a second lol.
@gregkinsey26510 жыл бұрын
Like Adam, I started on a Marine Band, in the early 1970s. Yes, it was the harp that all the great blues players used (because there were not many alternatives in those days). However, There are better harps on the market today - harps that play better and require less tinkering. If you want that traditional "Marine Band" sound, spend the extra 10£/15€/20$ and get the Marine Band Deluxe. The reeds are tuned the same way and it has a very similar tone to the MB1986. However, it is held together with screws, which keeps it airtight, and it's easy to open for cleaning or adjustments. The comb is improved and feels much smoother. It also plays better - more responsive and consistent across the holes. And the open covers project much better for a pure, loud tone. So ESPECIALLY if you are a beginner, you will likely be happier, and learn faster, with the Marine Band Deluxe. It's worth the upgrade price. (And if you can afford the next step up, the Crossover is even better playing and more responsive - although the reeds are tuned slightly different and it has a slightly brighter tone.)

I love the marine band sound but I do a lot of work on my harps and having nails holding the thing together is really inconvenient. I have to convert all my marine bands to m2 screws and it’s a pain. I find myself buying marine band deluxes now because they are tapped for screws and have a sealed comb. Plus they’re only like 15 dollars more on rockinrons. I’m willing to pay 15 more dollars to not have to tap the thing for screws and seal the comb with shellac.

I haven't played MB harmonicas since the 80s when I switched to Special 20s. The MBs used to rust and leak and swell. Still miss that sound tho. Thanks to this video, I'm back. And you're right! They make them way better now!

Pro origamists don't use the same paper as they would have started off with, at least not for presentation pieces :)
