Hoi An, my hometown, lived there in the 70s, my house is actually right on the Thu Bon river on Bach Dang street. Used to be quiet and growing up there, kids in the evening would swim in the river, and we would swim to the sandbar jutting out from An Hoi. Or we would fly kites or fish on the river. That was all there was to do back then. The only two things I remember we did back then that make the town famous now are the lantern on the river every full moon (not every day like now) and the lantern once a year during the biggest full moon (ram). There weren't any tailor shops or night markets or anything like that. Anh all the riverfronts are actual people's homes (including mine) and not restaurants, bars, and coffee shops like now. It's different now, but now for the worse, I wonder how is it to be living there now.

some typo in my comment "but NOT for the worse"... I still love that town, it's different now, more lively.

Wow this was so interesting to read! Thank you! We would love to be able to see and experience what Hoi An was like back in those days. It's nice to know the lantern tradition has a genuine background story 😊 Do you ever go back and visit?

Thank you 🙏 We genuinely consider Vietnam to be our favourite country so far. We also visited a few more places north which we’ll be bringing videos out soon on! We’ll be back, definitely.

Everyone loves Hoi An, but yeah, I'd rather not be hassled all day to buy something as I don't find that relaxing. Hopefully the vendors get the memo soon before they piss off all the tourists. I saw a vlogging family use Jack Tran Tours, which looked like an awesome day for them. Saw others biking around like "Chase and Shelbs" or do lantern making and such and yet one other vlogger said there's a show that's sort of like Cirque du Soleil, I think, that is a bit more expensive, but really worth it. I also saw a great food tour there from "Steph and Pete".

We love the food tour videos we’re always watching them - didn’t manage to do one here but we did do a cooking class which was fun! Hoi An was definitely more touristy than we expected but so worth the stop ☺️
