This modding lesson will explain how to use the Hearts of Iron IV character converter introduced in No Step Back to convert character to the new format used by the game.

I suspect a railway modding video is coming, but when it comes could you please explain more about referencing railways in focuses? For example "if there's a lvl 2 railway from X to Y enable this focus". If this is even possible.

So in cases when we would previously use create_country_leader as an effect of a focus or event, do we now need to define them as a character outside of the tree or event and then just use the recruit command?

create_country_leader seems to be working, so its possible you can do create_country_leader and then recruit the created character.

Is it possible to make a character both a country leader and general? I couldnt do it manually, its always general or leader, depends on which role is coded first, never both

It has to be possible as the Habsburg king of Poland can become a field marshall via focus.

If I'm creating a brand new mod will any of the modding lessons be out of date or this tool is just for updating old mods?

Some states in a mod of mine had ids that went from 807 to 862. The update added states with ids within that range and when I load up the nudger, it shows my custom states as blank. But in others like the Caucasus it shows Paradox's new states, so it then overrides my states. How do I make my mod override the updates states so that mine are shown instead? Its also doing something similar for strategic regions, like it doesn't know that my state files exist.

If you mod doesn't redo the entire map and overrides all the states you will need to bump the numbers of your states to match the last number of the vanilla states... You can't just make the states added in No Step Back dissapear as that could cause issues with the game.

@@Cisco-1944 Seems so, although you could use a pre No Step Back world map but that could leave out some significant updates to the map...

@@Cisco-1944 It’s a bit convoluted, but if you put “replace_path = history/states” in the descriptor file(s), and then paste EVERY state from 1.10 and your new states into the states folder, it won’t freak out. Works for me.

Should be fine, railways do not affect state files.

Hello, I followed your step to add some advisors, military high command, and advisors, After update to No Step Back, all of them "PUFFF" gone. I don't know why. I rewrite the mod with the generic advisor / military character, but still doesnnt work. May I send you my mod and help me to fix the thing?

They are gone because they are in the old format, you need to convert them to the new format for them to show up.

How can we now give characters tooltips instead of effects ? Adding "custom_effect_tooltip" to "modifier" or under trait of the advisor doesnt seem to work.

What do you mean tooltips? Descriptions?

​@@TheIronWorkshop Lets say the advisor has special effect like "on_add" which means its not normal trait or modifier and therefor nothing will show up as an effect of the advisor in game. Before u could just write modifier = { custom_effect_tooltip = some_tooltip} and write description of the effect so that the player knows. With the new patch tooltips dont show up in when written in the "modifier" section or in trait.

That is something I missed, if it does not convert admirals that is a serious issue... Do they not appear in the list of characters of the country?

If not you may have to convert them manually (take a look at an admiral in the vanilla game and follow the format)

@@TheIronWorkshop thanks for the response! Turns out, it did do the admirals as well, I just had so many generals and field marshals that they got buried in the list. When I went through and made sure the names were all correct, I noticed they were indeed converted. However, it seems advisors really weren't converted. Not sure why
