Hey guys, i see all your comments and im sorry i havent been up with them. Ive been working full time and with school coming back i have little free time. Good video bro, what worked best for my shenanigans was using mapgen to create my states, then use a text converter to change the states into strategic regions. For anyone struggling with mapgen, the major crash occurs since man the guns requires all naval provinces have strategic regions, which mapgen does not assign.

The Boundary Map seems to allow you to draw your provinces on your own. I quite like it.

Also, I used this, and I can confirm that the border tab on the generator is for provinces. I did one with us state borders and I saw the straight lines

Lmao zedong hey! There’s an easy way to do this, there’s a mod I use called easy buff, it adds another row of slots with different things in them, the mod is used for cheats but you can copy and paste and edit them easily. I can make a video soon I’ve just been very busy as thanksgiving week is when teachers love to cram in a lot of projects and tests.

Mao Zedong hey, to edit terrain, use nudger, in database tab there should be a section where you can paint provinces, and to make a state impassable simple add “impassable = yes” in any state you want to be impassable

i know this comment is 5 months old but heres a few ways to fix that method #1. Right click on HOI4 in your steam library and open properties. Click on Set Launch Options and enter -debug then press enter. method #2. Open the base HOI4 game files along with your mod files, copy every country from the base game's common/countries file path into your mod's common/country file path. method #3. Open the base HOI4 game files along with your mod files, copy the generic.txt file from the base game's common/national_focus file path into your mod's common/national_focus file path. method #4. Install notepad++ or use any other text editor other than Notepad. Go to Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\mod and right click on the .mod folder created for your mod. I’m having an issue where the game functions in the nudger however whenever I try to make a new state the game doesn’t do it and just resets to what it looked like before. I’m not sure what I did wrong

Hey! Thank you for your tutorial. It is very helpful. However, it doesn't work for me as the computer or program always changes my definition.csv in the map folder of the mod to definition.csv.old whenever I start the game. Therefore it ignores the file and uses the definition.csv from the vanilla game. Do you have a idea what I could do to prevent this? :(

Great video, you earned a subscriber. But I got to the point where we're trying to get the game to run and I keep getting error messages that I don't know how to fix. Being the first time I've ever modded HOI4, I have absolutely no knowledge of what needs to be fixed or how.

One error i am getting in my crashlogs is that the provinces are not assigned a continent. idk how to assign continents. also, it seems that everytime i open the debug or main game with my mod, the .mod file resets to what it was before i edited it. also, when i play the game the game crashes (also debug mode and nudger) but its a great video! thanks for helping me atleast put the platform down for my (hopefully) future mod!

Jaden Lawrence sorry for the super delayed response, yes that file should have generated with the MapGen when you made the mod. If you dont have it I recommend regenerating your map as that file is necessary

German the map generator does have a state generator, it just dorsnt work too well haha. Id recommend combining all your probinces into one state file like I believed i showed in the video. Make sure your state file has a state_category or the game will crash.

You can only have a maximum of 20,000 provinces. Anything more will crash the game or ruin the graphics.

One question: - do boats work? As silly as it sounds, in my world, despite getting it to be able to run in the current patch, for whatever reason, I can't send ships out at all. EDIT: I posted this before watching the video, so if you get to this...oops, but I have an odd feeling this isn't normal. EDIT 2: Boundary input allows you to make states - states and provinces won't cross the black line, so you can pre-make states if you wanted to or had specific needs like an Alsace-Lorraine that needs to look with the exact curve. EDIT 3: This is a bug that's scourged me since 1.6, so if yours at least work that's all I really want to know right now.

If there’s sea provinces it should work, also make sure you do buildings in the nudger, if the port looks like it’s in the middle of the province use the building tab in nudger cause it won’t work then

@@rebelsj2159 EDIT TL:DR edition: I actually tried long ago and it didn't work, but now it works. One question - did you always do nudge from main menu or console? I generally did from console but it didn't work till main menu which I think I saw you do in the video. i think I tried buildings in nudger but I'm assuming I just didn't do some required things to get it to work. When I get the next map done I'll try again. How much of the mod was done before you used the buildings in the nudger? EDIT: Oh ok my thing when I try to do that says 'Found Invalid Provinces" that explains a ton. So you were giving the correct info, but it turns out there's something wrong on my end, meaning another 10 hours of searching...yay... But hey. You gave me the answer "Yes it can work on a mass naval map" which is half of what I wanted and I learned what the issue was. Cool! Thanks man.

@@rebelsj2159 So oddly enough a friend of mine wanted me to start his mod for him because everytime he tries it crashes horribly. And in the beginning before I sent it to him and only one state had a nation or any details, I did the same thing with nudge and...nothing happened. This might explain it - I was doing that all along but it wasn't working so I think the worlds needs a certain amount of states and nations before nudge can actually generate all of the buildings which would make sense. Also I tried looking for your discord and IDK if I was doing it wrong or if you put the wrong number (I am fairly new to it) but it wasn't working.

Protein Bepis either you forgot to generate state files or it might have not worked or broke, you can regenerate in map gen or you can use a number lister online, list all your provinces out, check definitions file to see how many you have, then copy and paste all the numbers into one state file, then break them in to smaller ones in the nudger as you please. Lmk if you need help

Protein Bepis how many of these errors are there? And check the number on them. Tell me if it’s something like this: the error says province 100 lets just say, but in definition you have only 50 provinces. If that’s the case then your province map probably has errors, let me know if it’s like that

George hey, this is a pretty complicated thing to do and would take a large amount of time. I can explain it in full but it’d be very in depth and very hard to do, however, what I’d recommend is to copy the base game province map, and height and terrain and river maps, edit them by removing the areas you don’t want on the map, and put them into map generator and generate a new map that way. If your confused let me know.

Creating a mod will always pre-set it as the current updated version of HOI4, and DLC requirement is probably no.

Békési-Marton György yes this is a tutorial on 1.8.1. You will get many errors though as the map generator works off of 1.5 I believe, that’s why you have to go in and manually fix many of the errors. DLC is up to you if you want to use it in your mod or not. Just when posting it on the steam workshop make sure to list what DLC is required and which is not

This is a great tutorial. I have made my map but I have an issue. Whenever I load my map, it stops at “Loading Databases” and crashes. When I check the error log, it says “weatherpositions.txt is empty” and I have no idea how to fix this. I would like to see more tutorials from you. Keep up the great work!

Thank you. For the crash do you have any other errors, check the bottom of the error log some hide down there. Weather positions will really never crash your game I still have that error cause I’m too lazy to do the weather. Make sure every province has a strategic region cause that will crash your game if some provinces don’t have a strategic region, if you need any help dm me on discord I’ll help more there cause you can share pictures, mines Rebelsj21#4351

Hm that’s strange, normally you should have a lot of errors, I apologize also if I take long to respond I am in school throughout the week days. Later today when I get home I’ll look into what happened. Have you got every province into a strat region and state? Make sure all your state files have a state category, and atleast 1 manpower in “manpower =“ also make sure you have the default focus tree in your mod. Those are just some things that might crash it

when you create the states it generates files in user/documents/paradox/hoi4 or however your file structure is, you need to copy these into the mod folder to make them "stick"

Yes, id say its actually easier to do this. You have to draw in the provinces in paint or photoshop manually though, and manually enter them into the definition file. Its actually very simple once you get the hang of it. In the ingame nudger, in database tab i believe there is a rgb generator, it will give u random colors that arnt in use, use the color it gives you, draw the province, then enter into it all into the definition file

Frozen Mouse it is in the map folder, definition.csv or something. I explain it somewhere in the video i think but each line of code represents a province, go to the bottom, copy the line above the last one, and paste it below, change the first number up one, its like 1, 2, 3, then yours should be 4. The next three numbers are the province RGB color, in that order, red, green, blue, then enter if its a land or sea province, probably land, then true or false, this is whether or not its a costal province, true means it is, then the terrain, jungle plains, hills, etc, lastly the continent, just put 0 it doesnt matter too much, all seperated by ;. Look at the other ones for reference, hope this helps

PoZzeidoN check your mod files? Make sure your mod uploaded correctly and that the map files are the ones you generated and not the base game, that’s weird tho.

Rebelsj21 mine are the generated ones. There are no errors, and everything is put in correctly, but it still doesn’t load. It mainly ignores the “replace_path” things, as things like the edited bookmarks are the same when they shouldn’t be. What do I do

How do you make a river?

In maps folder there’s “rivers.bmp”. Use base game file for reference it’s easy to figure out. However I’d recommend the wiki as it’s a lot to describe and the wiki can describe way better than me: hoi4.paradoxwikis.com/Map_modding

I had the same crash. You need to go into your main txt document (the one named after your mod) and at the bottom, under all the other "replace_path"s, put, replace_path="common/achievements.txt" For good measure, I put a blank txt file called "achievements" under the "common" folder in my mod too. That should solve it.
