It does seem like a sort of bone headed darwinian thing to say, the original quote. However military alliances are for war, always have been. I'm reminded of George Washington's last speech as president talking about the dangers of entangling alliances. His point being alliances are pointless if one's intention is to avoid war. Im sure the president of Russia sees it similarly. The notion that NATO is purely a defensive alliance is silly. Offense vs. Defense is really just a matter of where you're standing. The Germans certainly saw Barbarossa as a defensive operation, pre-empting the inevitable attack from the soviets. Does one have to wait to be attacked physically to be just in declaring war? That may be the most moral and ethical course, waiting that long and being on your back foot however often means failure and loss of the war.

So what happens after this: Japan probably goes for Sahkalin, China, and tries a Pro-Gamer Move against the United States The Entente, who have been gearing up for a war this entire time, tell Japan "No." Germany realises that some of the pacific islands lost in the first great war are rightful German clay, and seek to preserve world peace by limiting Japan's expansion. Via a declaration of war. Home islands get landed on by basically the entire world at this point, Japan gets balkanised, parts of China get turned into a German puppet to prevent the spread of communism. No further large wars are declared. France proceeds to spend the next 30 years malding at Germany for just standing there peacefully. The end.

The Hess mission was supposed to be asking for peace but was disowned by the German government. 3) back to my main point Germany invaded Poland after UK and France made commitments to fight if Poland was invaded. Then Germany invaded Poland knowing it would lead to a wider war. Hitler's Germany also sent bombers to Spain when other countries were staying out of the conflict. Unlike WW 1 it really isn't in dispute how WW2 started. Japanese troops attacked china and German troops attacked Poland. And Belgium ect.

This alternate reality play always amuses me. There was no world in which Adolf would not have torn apart Europe. He quite famously declared his eternal hate for all the people he then attacked without being in the position to do so. The German economy was not really strong at the start, the reparation costs were simply not paid anymore, and the growth was just fueled with inflation and taking over the gold reserves of Austria and all the places he invaded. The issue is that games like this do not properly simulate financial markets. The only reason that Germany turned into a economic motor for Europe, basically providing a lot to further peace, European Union, and economic strength to Europe was the Marshalplan, debt forgiveness, and allowing Germany to restart without eternal guilt. And the only reason that was allowed to happen was the smartness of the western allies, and the threat of the Soviets. Same with Austria, which was declared faultless, victim, and guilt free by the allies in 1955. Till the 2000s, history books in school declared Austria as victim. A role Austria needed to have as neutral buffer in the cold war. Insane!!!
